The unconscious critical patient
The Christmas celebrations felt like fulfilling Audrey Hepburn's last wish.
As soon as the New Year of 1993 ended, Ms. Hepburn's health deteriorated rapidly!
Hepburn, who was undergoing chemotherapy at Switzerland hospital, collapsed due to severe side effects and was immediately admitted to a hospital ward.
Standing at her bedside, looking at the unconscious Audrey Hepburn, all her vital signs were hovering at a low point. Although she was not deteriorating further, the extent of her condition was visibly poor.
The doctor had just explained the available first aid measures, all of which were somewhat rough and invasive medical procedures.
Robert asked with concern, "Doctor, is this treatment really necessary?"
The doctor replied, "Actually, we're now gambling on whether Ms. Hepburn can pull through and naturally recover to her original health. But frankly, given her age and her original physical condition, the chances of her recovering on her own are not high."
"Therefore, using instruments to maintain its vital signs is the most appropriate approach. However, in my experience, once these instruments are installed, there's a high probability that it will never fully recover its original healthy state."
A doctor who has seen enough patients can certainly determine whether a patient still has hope of recovery.
However, professional considerations regarding the necessity of resuscitation and the wishes of the family sometimes differ. Doctors, of course, cannot make unilateral decisions about a patient's life or death. Perhaps a miracle, one that everyone hopes for, will occur.
"Henry." Helpless, Robert looked at his comrade who had been with him in caring for Ms. Hepburn all this time.
Henry shook his head and said, "I've already notified the boss's two children; they're on their way. Legally speaking, neither of us has the authority to make any decisions."
Turning to the doctor, Henry continued, "So please, doctor, do your best to maintain Ms. Hepburn's life. The decision on whether to use life support is up to her two children."
"I understand." The doctor then gave a series of instructions, and the nurses quickly got to work.
At a time like this, would sending more to United States still be of any use? Henry wondered to himself.
Although Sean and Luca lived in different places, they arrived at the hospital around the same time. Upon arrival,
Henry provided them with firsthand information.
This is the way everyone has gotten used to since Henry became his assistant. Anyway, Henry will give a general overview first, and if there are still any unclear parts, you can ask him directly.
"No matter what, by any means necessary, we should do everything we can to save Mother's life."
"I think we should give our mother a dignified departure, instead of leaving her with tubes inserted into her body, her heart beating only while she is unconscious."
The two young men, Sean and Luca, expressed differing opinions. Unfortunately, neither could convince the other. Robert and Henry could only stand by and watch, preventing the two brothers from fighting.
"Robert, what do you think?" Luca asked.
Robert's expression stiffened when he was suddenly called upon. He hadn't intended to get involved in the brothers' argument, but being called upon and stared at by both brothers, he felt he had no choice but to speak up.
Luca went a step further, saying, "In the past ten years or so, you've spent more time with your mother than any of us. What do you think she would do if she were lucid?"
Left with no other option, Robert replied, "Luca, I think your mother would share your opinion: that she should be able to die with dignity, rather than being reduced to a cyborg, dragging on in a state of half-death."
Sean immediately retorted, "What kind of bullshit is that! You only have a chance if you live. If you give up now, even if you might recover in the future, if you lose your life, all your chances become zero."
"And who are you, Robert? I don't agree with that kind of thinking. Henry, what do you say?"
Holy crap! Bro, you're clearly trying to get me to declare my support for your stance.
Robert even dismissed the other person's words as unworthy of their authority, so why would my words carry weight?
Instead of following this muddle-headed young master's lead, Henry said, "Actually, why don't we just ask Ms. Hepburn herself for her opinion?"
As soon as he said that, Henry received scornful looks from everyone present. Sean said with dissatisfaction, "Audrey is unconscious, nobody knows what she's thinking. Otherwise, would we be asking you?"
Henry said quietly, "There are Mutants in this world, Mutants some of them have Mind Stone abilities."
Although the woman can no longer speak, surely her consciousness hasn't died along with her.
Sean frowned and asked, "If you had this method, why didn't you use it sooner?"
"The consequences of Mutants abilities do not have legal force, meaning they cannot be used as the basis for a doctor's judgment. Only the two of you have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the lady. And whether you are willing to believe in Mutants abilities is also a question."
Luca frowned and asked, "So you're Mutants? You have this ability?"
Henry shook his head and denied it, saying, "No, I'm not. Of course, I don't have Mind Stone either, but I can find people to help me."
"It depends on whether you need it or not." To be honest, I am an alien, and I really don't have Mind Stone.
The two brothers exchanged a glance, Sean nodded, saying, "Henry, I'll leave it to you. How long will it take for your friend to get here?"
"I'll contact them first. I don't know how long it will take them to get here, but I'll try my best to ask them for help."
"Thank you for your help."
Henry left the ward and found a public phone that could make international calls.
In this situation, who else could you turn to? Of course, it would be the X-Men, those easy targets. It doesn't necessarily have to involve Professor X personally, and it's best if it's not this bald guy. There are so many Mutants who can read minds; just get one of them and the problem is solved.
He hasn't been in contact with the X-Men since the Dark Phoenix incident six months ago. In other words, any previous contact was initiated by them, not by Henry actively seeking to reconnect.
Now that he was going to ask them for help, would the X-Men be willing to lend a hand? Henry wasn't sure, but he still made the call anyway.
With a heavy heart, Zhixin answered the phone. A sweet female voice came from the other end, saying, "This is Jean Grey's Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Where can I find you?"
Hmm? The school changed its name? Has something happened to X-Men?
Although he had some doubts, they weren't important at all. Henry said, "This is Henry Brown. Please look for X."
Any X-Men will do. Oh, preferably Hank McCoy. Is he here?
