Unexpected Visitor
The joyous class reunion didn't last long. Suddenly, Julianne Williams, the plump, dark-skinned secretary, poked her hand into the microphone and peeked out from the office doorway. "Boss, there's someone at the door who says he wants to see you, but didn't say what it's about. He identified himself as Jack Reacher."
Brian Mills was the first to stop smiling and become alert. Mark Casey didn't continue joking around either; he was only a step slower than Brian and placed his hand on a point where he could easily draw his gun.
Although Charlize Theron was a well-traveled woman, this was the first time she had seen Special Forces member get serious up close.
For her, who has been constantly honing her acting skills recently, a sense of suffocation involuntarily overwhelmed her, as if it were choking her. Her heart felt like it was about to jump out of her chest.
Henry pressed down on the girl's hand, calming her flushed face. He then said to his two dutiful old friends, "Don't worry, it's probably not someone from over there; it's about something else."
She then announced to the outside world, "Julianne, please have Mr. Jack Reacher come upstairs directly. No need to register. I need to see him."
"Okay, boss." The chubby, dark-skinned woman, who had shrunk back down, chattered away with her colleague at the front desk.
Although they didn't draw their guns, Brian and the others still helped tidy up the desk to make the office look more presentable. They also asked, "Henry, do you know this Jack Reacher?"
"No, I don't know him. But the people at the Continental Hotel aren't that polite; they come in through the front door. So I think he must have been sent by Stark."
Upon hearing that name, Brian Mills knew he shouldn't ask any more questions. However, he was still curious whether this "Stark" referred to "Stark Industries" or "Tony Stark."
The organization behind him agreed to let him take on this security job. Although they are legally prohibited from conducting any activities within the country, as long as they are not discovered and no concrete evidence is left, no one can find fault with them.
So Brian Mills and the other three also had a secret mission: to investigate Stark Studios and Stark Industries, and even the secrets of Henry Brown.
This is a very vague request, indicating that the higher-ups don't know what to investigate either. It may simply be for intelligence gathering, so there's no need to risk exposure by forcibly investigating.
However, the CIA, probably behind the scenes, never imagined that Brian and others had decided long ago to keep Henry Brown's relationship a secret in order to maintain this friendship.
Everyone can see clearly that someone who can carry and fly an airplane is a lifesaver when necessary. In comparison, whether the reward for handing over this information will even reach a thousand is questionable.
As long as Henry Brown doesn't have any treasonous tendencies, Brian and the others won't say anything. Their daily reports will just consist of some insignificant intelligence, things that aren't in the newspapers.
Therefore, the CIA was destined to gain nothing.
It's said that one should see through things but not say them out loud. Henry had certainly considered the CIA hiding behind Brian and the others, but he felt he could take a gamble on the character of these four old acquaintances.
On the other hand, What If...? the CIA already knew about our intelligence but chose to remain silent, then in the worst-case scenario, they would only use the capabilities that had already been revealed.
As long as Brian Mills is still willing to help, that should be enough to solve most of my current troubles.
After seeing off the Old Money couple, regardless of whether they were Vampires or not, and whether the others had eaten their fill of grease, Henry had already made his name known in that group's eyes.
If he were to take over the entire Arden Family, it would be tantamount to the entire group declaring war. Therefore, Henry had to restrain his impulse.
To prevent the situation from escalating.
However, his mind was currently focused on this man who called himself "Jack Reacher".
Although the other person was coming up in the elevator, Henry had already spotted them with his X- X-Ray Vision.
He was a huge man, as big as a bear, with neat short hair, exuding an unimaginable sharpness, and had a different temperament from Brian Mills beside him.
Brian and his fellow Special Forces veterans only display their uniquely military ferocity when they are fully focused. But Jack...
Reacher doesn't possess the qualities of a pure soldier; What If...? you said he were a wrestler, no one would doubt it.
The reason why you don't think he will be a wrestling star is because you don't see any flamboyant qualities in him, but instead he has a sense of decadence?
Like a lone wolf that has been destitute in the wilderness for a long time, although it may look rather bad, no one would doubt that it would lack the strength to tear into tender meat.
Is he really the person I imagined?
"Ding." The elevator door opening notification sound was surprisingly clear, even though everyone remained silent.
The man who stepped out of the elevator made the chubby, dark-skinned woman waiting outside gasp. It was as if she had been struck in a sensitive spot, and her body shuddered.
"Hello, I'm Jack Reacher. Is this Mr. Henry Brown's office?"
The chubby girl finally remembered the important matter and said with feigned composure, "Yes, Mr. Brown has been waiting inside for a long time." She didn't even notice that her voice sounded a little off.
The bear-like man, as if oblivious, knocked and entered the office. Henry stood at the desk, welcoming him and extending his hand. "Hello, I'm Henry Brown. And you are?"
After a moment's hesitation, Jack Reacher introduced himself as "Lieutenant Jack, U.S. Army Military Police Special Investigations Unit."
Reacher.
"As ordered by my superior, I was to assist Mr. Tony Stark in an investigation. But I was unable to meet Mr. Stark in New York; instead, it was Mr. Stark's secretary who gave me a plane ticket to Los Angeles."
"They told me I could get the information and necessary assistance I need from the CEO of Stark Studios. I hope this isn't an excuse for you to use your connections to get me to do some side jobs."
Jack Reacher's warning also hinted at the trouble Henry was in, something he was somewhat aware of.
At the same time, the big man looked at Brian and Mark beside him. Because when these two heard the word "military police," they seemed to have encountered their natural enemy, showing a somewhat uneasy atmosphere. This naturally caught the attention of the bear-like man.
Henry, trying to smooth things over for his two friends, said, "They are members of my security team. They are retired former Army Green Berets and are no longer under your jurisdiction."
"As for what you mentioned, I am aware of it and will explain it to you and provide the necessary assistance. However, I can assure you that this is not my private matter."
Before getting to the point, Henry didn't immediately begin to elaborate. Instead, he turned to his men and said, "Darling, what I'm about to say is Tony's personal matter."
"I can't tell you too much without his permission. Maybe you could go to the supermarket first to buy what you want for dinner, and then I can cook it when I get back."
"Okay, no problem." Having been educated by Catherine Hepburn, Charlize Theron had become increasingly adept at navigating boundaries. Of course, she wouldn't refuse Henry's request.
Brian Mills was quick-witted. He immediately stood up and said, "Charlize, do you have a car? I'll give you a ride home?" Mark Cassie, seeing this, also stood up.
They certainly wanted to know anything about Tony Stark, whether or not they would report it to the CIA. But it was clear that Henry wouldn't reveal these things to outsiders. So it was better to take the initiative and find an excuse to leave.
Charlize Theron laughed, "This is a huge help. I thought I'd have to hail a taxi back."
