An Old Lady's Keen Eye
Henry walked quite quickly, but his movements were not too jolting, which made the old woman uncomfortable. The group went downstairs smoothly, and Henry helped Catherine Hepburn into the back seat of the car and fastened her seatbelt.
In this era, rear seat belts in cars are usually an aftermarket addition. Although Princess Diana's death in a car accident in 1997 brought attention to the issue of rear seat belts, society as a whole has not yet caught up with the times.
However, the elderly woman, who had been squeezed into the back seat, complained, "Won't you let me sit in the front passenger seat?"
"Sweetie, sit in the back seat. Maria Stark can take care of you. It's much safer than the front passenger seat."
After putting the personal nurse's luggage in the trunk, Henry returned to the driver's seat. Looking at the two people in the back, he asked, "Are you all settled? Seatbelts on? The ride might be a little—well, exciting?"
"Kid, you don't want to go on a street race, do you?" Catherine Hepburn said excitedly.
Henry started the car and stepped on the gas, saying helplessly, "Who can drive fast in downtown New York? It's just that today is a bit special; it might feel like bumper cars. Be careful."
Looking at the unusual scene outside the window, the old woman asked, "What's wrong today? Everyone on the street seems so tense."
After a moment's hesitation, Henry confessed, "Do you know the Sentry, Catherine?" He then drove erratically, swerving left and right to avoid other vehicles on the road.
"Of course I know, the Golden Guardian. I watch the news and keep up with current events. Humanity's first superhero. Ha, superhero. I thought I only saw that word in comics."
Faced with the old lady's sharp remarks, Henry didn't know how to respond. He could only mutter to himself, "Anyway, it's that Sentry superhero who caused the trouble."
"Oh, he's not pretending anymore."
"Not pretending? What do you mean?" Henry couldn't help but ask, seeing this amusing reaction. He casually overtook another car.
"His acting is still a bit too green for me. I don't believe that kid is like a comic book superhero. Compared to him, your acting is much better, little Henry. Missed me, huh? I almost believed it myself."
At times like this, the only option is to deny it to the death. Henry said, "This isn't acting. I really missed you, Catherine." He even honked the horn twice guiltily. As he passed the car in front, he rolled down his window and complained to the other driver.
But what Henry was most interested in now was which quack doctor had diagnosed the old lady with dementia. Her eyes were so sharp. Trying to fool her? Forget it.
As if to emphasize Henry's thoughts, Catherine Hepburn asked, "Since you say you miss me and want to cook for me and have some good wine, tell me, what kind of dish are you planning to make?"
"Of course it's what you want to eat. I haven't even asked yet, so of course I don't know what to prepare. Catherine, don't you have anything you particularly want to eat? You know my cooking skills; I could be a head chef at a high-end restaurant."
"May I order?"
"Yes. Eating the same bland food all the time can get boring, right? Is there any flavor you miss?"
"Then I want Beef Wellington."
Henry was speechless for a moment. He turned left, then right, and another car swerved past. "Catherine, you know I have the skills of a Michelin three-star chef. Is it really appropriate for me to make some infamous United Kingdom culinary disaster?"
The old lady said earnestly, "You asked me yourself what flavors I miss. Sometimes, the most delicious things are the ones I ate with that I can't forget."
"But if I had to pick the most memorable food, it would be those that were so bad they left a lasting impression. And Beef Wellington isn't bad, it just has a rather peculiar flavor. Anyway, since you asked, that's the only thing I want to eat."
Alright, stop haggling. Just make whatever Catherine Hepburn wants to eat.
Henry drove around in circles until he finally got out of New York City and headed north into the suburbs. It would take more than two hours to drive to Fenwick, Connecticut.
Along the way, Henry spoke with the old woman, who was neither quite dazed nor exceptionally clear-headed. He also made sure to ask Maria Stark Tom to contact the Fenwick family.
That house was where Hepburn's brother and his family lived. It would be quite impolite to go back suddenly without giving them prior notice.
Besides, with such a major event happening in New York, the other party might be worried and even trying to contact Catherine. It would be good to call back and let her know she's safe.
As for the Sentry might be possessed by the Void, or whose the Void personalities have emerged, they are currently engaged in combat with U.S. military armed helicopters. Many of these expensive War Machine have already been destroyed by the Sentry.
The U.S. military's confidence in its invincibility remains unshaken in this era. Moreover, when faced with powerful Mutants, they always manage to find ways to defeat them.
When the target is a Sentry, most U.S. military simply see him as another powerful Mutants. They will attack as long as their superiors give the order. Perhaps they will be lucky enough to hit the target with one shot and become a war hero.
The soldiers, however, were unaware that in the eyes of generals and politicians, they were merely one among the ranks of manpower or casualties.
However, thanks to the relentless efforts of the American U.S. military, Henry's evacuation with Catherine Hepburn went very smoothly. At least he wasn't being chased by that troublesome Sentry. At this stage, no one realized just how powerful this superhero truly was. It was like an ant not needing to distinguish whether it was an elephant or a dinosaur that stepped on it, nor could it tell. The U.S. military soldiers naively believed that if it couldn't be penetrated, it was simply because the caliber was too small; if it couldn't be damaged, it was simply because the yield was insufficient. Caliber plus yield could solve all the problems in the world.
Henry certainly didn't feel obligated to remind the U.S. military of anything. In fact, if he were to speak out, he might be seen as having ulterior motives.
He was simply wondering which comic book event this event, which didn't appear in the movie, corresponded to. Or rather, it meant that the world he lived in had begun to deviate from the established paths he was familiar with.
And most importantly... who will step in and deal with the Sentry?
The information about the Sentry of this world, aside from what we learn from the news media, comes from what Jack Reacher previously revealed privately.
What kind of treatment did the Sentry receive in this world? Who did they cooperate with? What did they do? Apart from the Watchtower building in New York, Henry knew nothing else.
Of course, Henry was equally clueless as to what triggered the Sentry to become the Void. He recalled that in the comics, the first time the Sentry lost control, it was only with the help of a group of powerful heroes, including Mister Fantastic, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange, and even the Sentry himself, who came to his senses and joined forces to suppress the Void.
These superheroes who helped suppress the Sentry are still ordinary people at this stage. Well, Doctor Strange isn't sure, since he hasn't personally verified their situation.
So, given this situation, how will this disaster brought about by superheroes end?
Henry was curious.
