The paramedic who jumped into the river was not some diving expert capable of working underwater for dozens of minutes in one breath. Without tools and in an unfamiliar environment, there was very little he could do.

The depth of this stretch of river was unknown, but the fact that the entire car had been submerged showed that it was not shallow enough for someone to simply stand up safely. And the deeper the car sank, the harder the rescue would become.

As for Cassie Webb inside the car, she had probably suffered a heavy impact when the vehicle crashed into the river and was unconscious now. Through Henry's hearing, the only sound inside the car was the gurgle of flooding water; he could not hear any attempt at self-rescue.

Well, Cassie Webb had helped him quite a bit. When they had taken in students from the Mutants school earlier, Katharine Hepburn had even asked Cassie to bandage and treat the injured children for free. He still owed her for those favors.

He could not misjudge the situation, assume she was destined to become Madame Web, and end up throwing away a life that still had so many good years ahead of it.

Having decided to help, Henry came to the gap where the car had smashed through the guardrail and put on a show of leaping out with all his strength. Cassie Webb still had plenty of time in the golden rescue window. There was no need to show too much extraordinary strength when ordinary human ability would do.

Just as he was about to hit the water feet-first, a force suddenly caught him around the waist and yanked him back!

The rebound sent him bobbing up and down like he was bungee jumping.
