The girl nodded. "Yes. The letter wasn't signed, but it said the amulet was for the sender's unborn child and included a prayer for Susanna's safe delivery.
"My mother only had one child—me. She came from a traditional Catholic family, so abortion wasn't allowed. That's why I believe the letter was about me, and the amulet was meant for me too.
"If Arnold sent the letter and the amulet, why would Lorin hide them among my mother's belongings instead of telling me? So I went to ask her. That's how I found out I'm not Arnold's child."
Well, that was one hell of a family secret. Henry said offhandedly, "Isn't the amulet a clue to your birth father? Haven't you looked into it?" "It isn't a common product.
