Background and History

Jiraiya taught Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan in the Land of Rain. Madara Uchiha had secretly placed his Rinnegan in Nagato as a child, intending for Nagato to eventually revive him with Rinne Tensei. Nagato did not learn the eyes’ origin until Obito revealed it much later 347 1093.

After Yahiko’s death, Nagato came to believe that overwhelming force—not dialogue—could secure peace. He took control of Amegakure and led Akatsuki while operating through the Six Paths of Pain, including a Deva Path made from Yahiko’s body. His aim was to gather the Tailed Beasts, revive the Ten-Tails, and deter war with its power 353 354 760.

During the allied raid on Amegakure, Hyuga Kagami severed Nagato’s control of the Six Paths with the Four Symbols Seal. Nagato remained connected to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and fought back, but Kagami later severed both of his legs with Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion. Konan and Zetsu helped him escape 355 356 359.

Nagato subsequently fused with First Hokage Cells. He rebuilt the Six Paths of Pain around five captured, still-living Jinchuriki, then used them in an assault on Konoha. After Hyuga Kagami forced him to retreat, Obito ambushed him and stole his Rinnegan. Nagato and Konan recovered Yahiko’s body before leaving their base 972 1067 1092 1093 1094.

Nagato later confronted Obito on the battlefield with his mutated Byakugan. His eyes troubled even Obito’s space-time techniques, though Nagato and Orochimaru subsequently disappeared. By a later account, Isshiki had obtained Nagato’s body 1334 1336 1369 1409.

Appearance

Nagato has red hair. The burden of the fully awakened Rinnegan once left him skeletal and reliant on a wooden cart; his later fusion with First Hokage Cells restored his mobility 358 357 464.

• Eyes — Madara’s ripple-patterned Rinnegan were replaced by white Byakugan after Obito stole them; those Byakugan later mutated into the Jōgan 1093 1201 1409.
• Legs — Kagami’s attack destroyed both legs below the thighs; a White Zetsu clone supported him during his escape 359.

Personality

Nagato presents himself as a god capable of imposing peace, yet his confidence rests on a conviction shaped by Yahiko’s death. He treats suffering as an acceptable means of making the ninja world seek peace. He can also be patient: rather than pursue Hanzo immediately after their earlier clash, he hid, recovered, and developed the Six Paths of Pain before taking Amegakure 354 760 1067 1085.

His bonds with Yahiko and Konan remain decisive. He refuses to discard Yahiko’s Deva Path, urges Konan to save herself when he is gravely wounded, and agrees to retreat when she invokes Yahiko’s last wish 485 359 515.

Abilities and Skills

Rinnegan and the Six Paths of Pain

Nagato remotely controlled bodies through Black Rods, giving them Rinnegan abilities. Losing the Rinnegan ended that control 10 890 1094.

• Deva Path — Used attraction, repulsion, and Planetary Devastation through Yahiko’s body 353 357 1072.
• Other Paths — Included summoning, chakra absorption, and restoration through the King of Hell 352 353 357.
• Jinchuriki Paths — His later set combined five living Jinchuriki with Path abilities and Tailed Beast power. Killer B initially resisted full control 972 973.
• Limitation — Before receiving First Hokage Cells, Nagato struggled to bear both the Rinnegan and the Demonic Statue at once 747 972.

Demonic Statue of the Outer Path

• Nagato could summon the statue even when Kagami’s seal cut off his Six Paths of Pain 355 356.
• He used it alongside his Rinnegan in battle; maintaining both powers placed a heavy burden on his earlier body 356 747.

Wood Release and Uzumaki Sealing Jutsu

• After losing the Rinnegan, Nagato retained powerful Wood Release. Flower Tree World Emergence restrained Sasuke’s Susanoo and suppressed his Amaterasu 1201 1202.
• His Adamantine Sealing Chains bound multiple Konoha shinobi and later caught Obito while Obito was intangible 1202 1336.

Jōgan

• Nagato’s mutated eyes could perceive Obito’s Limbo Clones 1334.
• They interfered with space-time, allowing Nagato to restrain Obito’s intangibility; their ability to seal space-time could disrupt space-time ninjutsu 1336 1399.

Relationships

• Jiraiya — Former teacher who repeatedly tried to reason with Nagato before fighting him 353 358 846.
