Cosmology
Realm designations
Historical accounts of the Three Realms War identify the three realms as the Human Realm, Yin Ghost Realm, and Demon Realm 229. Later cosmological descriptions distinguish the Spirit Realm, True Ghost Realm, and True Demon Realm by the energies their cultivators refine. 5477
| Realm | Cultivation energy | Mana manifestation |
|---|---|---|
| Spirit Realm | Vital Energy and Power | Primordial Spirit Power; pure and without unusual attributes |
| True Ghost Realm | True Ghost Qi | True Ghost Power; cold, evil, and chilling |
| True Demon Realm | True demonic energy | True Demon Power; ferocious and ruthless |
The Human, Ghost, and Demon lower realms are not single independent worlds, but categories containing dozens or possibly hundreds of planes. 5076 After an ancient stabilization of the realms, detached regions became lower planes whose altered heavenly laws could not support high-level cultivators indefinitely; cultivators reaching a threshold would return to their original realm through ascension. 244
Spirit Realm structure
The Spirit Realm is described as a collection of numerous strange spaces rather than one continuous continent. Its realms resemble giant bubbles within a larger enclosed space; when two such realm-bubbles intersect, a realm passage can form. 3690
- It is said to contain roughly one hundred major regions, though the actual number of inhabited and uninhabited realms is greater. 3690
- Its many self-contained realms limited the spread of ancient destruction; nevertheless, dozens were shattered into smaller, lower-tier planes. 7485
- Some damaged lower-tier planes can support cultivation only up to the Integration Realm. 7485
Cultivation ceiling
Mahayana is the highest cultivation realm permitted within the Three Realms. Mahayana cultivators possess world-shattering power and a direct connection to the realms' Heaven and Earth laws. 7534 7485
History
Ancient formation and division
Accounts trace the Three Realms back to upheavals connected to the Miro Realm. Qin Fengming recounts that an Immortal Realm cultivator caused a battle among Three Realms Mahayana existences that formed lower realms, while later records identify the Desolate Land as the region that fractured into the Three Realms after conflict among Star Palaces. 5231 8285
In an earlier era, the three realms fought continuously over resources. Initially, conflicts involved cultivators below the Integration Realm, but increasingly powerful figures joined until the parallel realms became unstable and neared collapse. Powerful figures dispatched from the three upper realms ultimately stabilized them. 244
The stabilization had lasting consequences:
- Eighty-one small areas detached from the Human-Demon side, thirty-six from the Demon Realm, and one hundred and eight from the Yin Ghost Realm. 244
- These detached areas collectively amounted to less than one ten-thousandth of the original realms' size. 244
- Their changed heavenly laws created the conditions associated with ascension to an upper realm. 244
Ancient cataclysm
A later catastrophic battle devastated the Three Realms, particularly the Spirit Realm. Dozens of realms collapsed, races and sects vanished, powerful inheritances were lost, and no cultivator advanced to Mahayana for two to three hundred thousand years afterward. 7485
The disaster also destroyed several ancient passages to the Miro Realm, making ascension substantially more difficult. Its survivors consequently recognized their vulnerability to threats from the Upper Realm, reducing large-scale inter-realm conflicts for a long period. 7485
Realm Passages and the Three Realms War
Every 150,000 years, boundary power weakens at several intersections between the realms. Powerful individuals can then force open passages, allowing demons and spirits below the Nascent Soul stage to cross without being hindered by boundary power. 229
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Primary motives | Plundering resources, capturing people, and slaughtering inhabitants of opposing realms 229 |
| Typical duration | More than one hundred years, until inter-dimensional energy stabilizes 229 1320 |
| Scale of loss | Each war costs millions of lives across the realms 229 |
| Logistical constraint | Invaders can convert foreign energy, but far more slowly than energy native to their own realm 1320 |
| Strategic response | Major powers establish concealed strongholds in hostile realms as energy supply points 1320 |
The war is both an existential crisis and an opportunity for cultivators. Sects are expected to set aside grievances and unite, while many cultivators participate in hopes of obtaining resources or breaking through to a higher realm. 670
Modern Turmoil
Renewed Three Realms War
A space rift in Soul Chasing Valley, filled with ghost mist and Ghost Commander-level Yin souls attempting to stabilize it, led major sects to conclude that another Three Realms War was imminent. 670
Preparations included the accumulation of cultivation resources, magic treasures, pills, talismans, and other war supplies. 673 683
Chaos Realm aftermath
When the Chaos Realm closed, cultivators across the Three Realms competed for its returning resources. Robberies, market activity, and resource collection produced a period in which conflict and prosperity existed simultaneously. 7156
Zou Rui's calamity
A strange aura later awakened reclusive Mahayana cultivators across the Three Realms, recalling the ancient catastrophe and signaling a new danger. 7485 The threat was confirmed as the return of Zou Rui, an Upper Realm cultivator whose earlier rampage had killed numerous Mahayana experts and shaken all three realms. 7763 7950
- Zou Rui's faction mobilized cultivators across the Three Realms and their attached smaller realms. 7861 8006
- More than 170 Mahayana cultivators ultimately gathered to confront him, including many of the Three Realms' highest-ranked experts. 8054
- Over a thousand Profound Tier cultivators were selected from across the Three Realms to operate great formations and refine offensive artifacts for the war effort. 8005
- Qin Fengming's actions in breaking the Heaven and Earth Great Formation earned him recognition for helping save the Three Realms from possible annihilation. 8005
Following Zou Rui's death, the rebel forces surrendered, and Qin Fengming activated an array core to return the secret realm involved in the conflict to the Three Realms. 8160
Significance
The Three Realms are both a shared cultivation world and a politically divided system whose realms possess distinct energies, laws, populations, and interests. Their history is defined by cyclical boundary wars, catastrophic interference from higher realms, and repeated efforts by Mahayana cultivators to preserve the stability of all three. 229 5477 7485 8067
