Background
Manghuang Mountain was founded tens of thousands of years ago by three peak Nascent Soul cultivators, alongside several other Nascent Soul experts. Its founders were masters of alchemy, artifact refining, talisman crafting, and magic arrays rather than cultivators devoted solely to orthodox cultivation advancement 394.
The founders accepted commissions from other factions in exchange for sufficient compensation. Their unusually high success rate in refining Nascent Soul-stage pills attracted both clients and specialist cultivators, establishing Manghuang Mountain as a sect centered on miscellaneous arts. Later arrivals expanded its expertise to puppetry, formations, and beast taming 394.
Though its overall strength was initially considered slightly below that of the Yuanfeng Empire's First-rate Sects, its services made it indispensable. Numerous sects and individual cultivators owed it favors and could be called upon to assist it, giving Manghuang Mountain exceptional standing 394.
Organization and Recruitment
Manghuang Mountain maintains a small but highly selective membership.
- The sect has only several thousand cultivators, far fewer than large sects with tens or hundreds of thousands of members 655.
- Its lowest-ranked members are Foundation Establishment cultivators; it has virtually no Qi Gathering disciples 655.
- Applicants must reach Foundation Establishment before the age of thirty, a standard intended to ensure exceptional aptitude 2475.
- Its Grand Competition is held once every ten years and recruits rogue cultivators through tests in specialized arts 637.
- Competition disciplines include alchemy, artifact refining, talisman crafting, magic arrays, grass cultivation, and beast taming 640.
- Participants are permitted one mistake, but must compensate the sect for wasted materials 640.
The sect's emphasis on specialized arts means disciples are valued for practical mastery as much as cultivation realm. Qin Fengming's exceptional performances in artifact refining, alchemy, formations, and talisman crafting during the Grand Competition drew the attention of its senior members 641 646 650.
Facilities and Appearance
Manghuang Mountain's grounds combine large-scale cultivation infrastructure with extensive underground and defensive works.
- A grand mountain gate announces major events with bells and drums audible tens of miles away 637.
- A reception hall within five li of the gate serves as the required passage for visitors entering through the main entrance and handles sect entry and exit procedures 1161.
- The artifact-refining grounds include a vast lava basin where earth-core fire is available for refining tests 640.
- An underground palace contains numerous numbered stone chambers used for examinations and secluded work 641.
- The ancestral grounds lie deep within the mountain and require specially opened routes for major ceremonies 2533.
- The back mountains contain many restrictions; ordinarily, only Nascent Soul cultivators holding restriction tokens may choose cave dwellings there 5304.
Institutional Expertise
Alchemy
Manghuang Mountain was built in part on its founders' ability to refine high-level pills. Their skill made them valuable to cultivators across the Yuanfeng Empire, particularly those unable to process rare spirit herbs themselves 394.
- Refines pills for outside cultivators under negotiated compensation or clearly marked prices 394 2490.
- Held alchemy trials that tested deduction and adaptability rather than rote use of a pill recipe 646.
- Later supplied rare pills sought by Core Formation, Nascent Soul, and Integration cultivators 2538.
Artifact Refining
Artifact refining is one of the sect's core disciplines and a major reason other factions seek its assistance 394.
- Uses earth-core fire and lava-fed refining areas for large-scale examinations 640.
- Requires competitors to refine designated materials and forge spirit tools within strict time limits 642.
- Offers rare magic treasures and artifact-refining materials in exchanges and auctions 2490 2505.
Talismans and Formations
Talisman crafting and magic arrays are foundational specialties of Manghuang Mountain, whose formation masters contribute to both its commercial work and defensive strength 394.
- Its talisman-crafting Grand Elder sought a successor through Yin Bizhu's family connection, leading to Qin Fengming's introduction to the sect 394.
- Formation masters designed the sect's combined attack arrays and the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiend Formations 2476.
- Peak Nascent Soul formation masters from Manghuang Mountain have established mountain-protection restrictions for outside sects, including sects beyond the Yuanfeng Empire 5304.
Defenses
Manghuang Mountain's defenses are formidable despite its comparatively small population.
- In its early period, the sect did not visibly employ anti-flight restrictions or divine-sense suppression formations, an unusual arrangement for a major sect 647.
- Auxiliary restrictions were activated for major ceremonies and were believed sufficient to deter all but Integration-stage intruders 672.
- During a later twenty-one-year closure, restrictions were established across a thousand-li radius; even late Nascent Soul cultivators risked death by entering 2211.
- Its sect-protection formation resisted a prolonged siege by tens of thousands of attackers for years 2474.
- During the Sha Shen Sect siege, Manghuang Mountain deployed Crystal Lightning Cannons, powerful puppets, combined attack arrays, and the Seventy-Two Earthly Fiend Formations 2475 2476.
- More than three thousand Core Formation-or-higher cultivators, including over two hundred Nascent Soul cultivators, formed its frontline defensive force during the counterattack 2476.
History
Qin Fengming's Entry
Yin Bizhu recognized Qin Fengming's talisman talent and offered to introduce him to Manghuang Mountain through her ancestor's connection to the sect's talisman-crafting Grand Elder 394. Qin later traveled to the sect and entered its Grand Competition, where his performances in several miscellaneous arts distinguished him from other applicants 637 641 646.
The five great cultivators of Manghuang Mountain accepted Qin Fengming as their disciple and designated him the sect's Young Master. This decision was intended both to cultivate his exceptional potential and to draw hostile factions' attention away from the sect during the approaching Three Realms War 672.
Pressure from the Sha Shen Sect
Manghuang Mountain's neutrality did not shield it from political pressure. Its alchemy, treasures, talismans, and formations were valuable to every major faction, making it strategically important during the Three Realms War 672.
The Sha Shen Sect repeatedly sought to annex Manghuang Mountain. The sect's continued survival depended in part on its close ties to the Tianxuan Sect and the Heavenly Enlightenment School, while several Manghuang Mountain elders were ambushed and seriously injured during travels outside Jingzhou 669.
To divert the Sha Shen Sect's attention, Manghuang Mountain sent Qin Fengming into the Sky Flame Mountain Range with six peak Core Formation disciples assigned to support him. The five great cultivators later admitted that he had also served as a lure, though they had not intended to abandon him 1163.
Siege and Victory
The Sha Shen Sect and Fairy Hongyan later led tens of thousands of cultivators in a siege against Manghuang Mountain 2474 2476. Under Zhuang Daoqin's leadership, the sect's disciples left the protection of their formation to launch a coordinated counterattack 2474.
The sect survived the siege with relatively limited losses, and the Sha Shen Sect was annihilated. Only a little over one hundred Manghuang Mountain cultivators died, primarily during the final pursuit of the defeated enemy force 2489.
After its victory, Manghuang Mountain publicly set aside past grievances, reopened itself to cultivators across the Yuanfeng Empire, and refused to pursue territorial expansion or plunder 2490.
Later Development
Manghuang Mountain gained four late Nascent Soul cultivators during a period of closure: Shu Jingliang, Wen Taihang, Yu Tian, and Venerable Tianquan 2211. It later possessed five Integration-stage cultivators, whose advancement ceremony included public explanations that benefited thousands of attendees 2538.
After returning from the Upper Realm, Qin Fengming was received as Manghuang Mountain's Ancestor. The sect's leaders and disciples recognized him as the figure whose earlier guidance, resources, and achievements had safeguarded its continued prosperity 5304 5326.

Legacy

Qin Fengming later established the Manghuang Sect in memory of Manghuang Mountain. The new sect preserved the earlier sect's focus on alchemy and artifact refining, while its three ancestral statues honored Manghuang Mountain's original founders and established the new organization as a continuation of their lineage 7366 7367.
