The surgery lasted three hours. When Leon stepped out of the operating room, he saw Shane, his eyes bloodshot, gently stroking Carl's head and comforting the child in a soft voice.
The moment Shane saw Leon come out, he hurried over and asked in a low voice:
"Dr. Castor, how is Lori? Is she all right?"
Leon nodded at him and patted Carl, who had come over with tears covering his face. He said:
"Things went fairly smoothly. She's out of danger now. She'll probably remain unconscious for another day or two, but exactly when she wakes up will depend on Ms. Lori's own willpower."
He gave a detailed explanation of Lori's condition and offered some advice about her recovery. Then, pretending to be exhausted, he said:
"That's all for now. You can go into the operating room and keep her company while she rests in bed. As for the other matters, I'll find time to discuss them with you."
After saying that, he ignored the two of them and went upstairs to his bedroom, where he cuddled the young beauty and went back to sleep.
After working hard all night and then being dragged out of bed to work overtime for several hours, the fact that he could speak to them properly instead of cursing them out was already proof of how kindhearted he was as Big Boss.
Leon slept until nine in the morning, when Amy gently woke him. Seeing the girl looking full of energy as she served him while he dressed and washed up, as though nothing had happened, he couldn't help but sigh. Europeans and Americans really did have sturdier constitutions.
"Boss, do you have any special arrangements for today?"
Leon picked up a large plate of breakfast made by Amy and took a few bites. Then he shook his head indifferently and said:
"Nothing special. Just follow the usual routine and arrange things for me."
"All right, Boss."
The girl didn't seem to regard what had happened last night as leverage. Instead, she treated her boss with the same respect and obedience as usual. She had gotten up early that morning and remained diligent and enthusiastic at work, without becoming conceited because she was favored. This made Leon think more highly of Amy.
The girl took out her usual notebook, flipped to a new page, and said:
"You have already arranged four things for today. First, interviewing the remaining people from Quarry Camp. Second, meeting Professor Amrin and having lunch with him. Third, Mr. Shane is waiting in the operating room for you to meet with him. Fourth, the office on the second floor of the office building has been cleared out and is being renovated. They need your opinion."
Leon nodded, swallowed a large piece of pan-fried fish, drank a glass of sour milk, and said:
"Arrange it that way. Oh, and keep an eye out for anyone at the base who knows how to grow vegetables and crops."
"In a few days, I'll also go out to look for experts in animal husbandry."
"During the first two or three years after this disaster begins, we won't lack food. But after four or five years, most of the food left over from peacetime will have been consumed or spoiled and become inedible."
"Once those stockpiles are gone..."
"Every survivor in the world will have to rely on growing food to survive. We need to prepare early, too."
Amy listened to Leon's words and fell into thought. Several seconds later, she spoke again:
"Boss, you really are far-sighted. You always think of things before anyone else can."
"I'll keep an eye out for people with farming skills, but our base is in downtown Atlanta. It'll be difficult to find land where anything can be grown."
After finishing breakfast, Leon placed his hand on Amy's slender waist and gave it a few exploratory strokes. Then he pulled her into his arms and breathed in the faint scent of her perfume as he said with certainty:
"We'll slowly clear out every Zombie in the surrounding area and build a huge shelter. Everything you want will be ours."
"As long as we overcome each difficulty one step at a time, we'll grow stronger and stronger."
Around ten in the morning, while Leon was directing the renovation workers as they remodeled the second-floor office, Amy brought Daryl over and told him that the people from Quarry Camp had arrived. They were waiting in the Reception Hall on the first floor for their interviews.
Facing the leeks who were about to join him, Leon acted exceptionally enthusiastic. He immediately set down his work and entered the reception room with Amy.
That was how it was when you were the boss. You couldn't waste time. Every minute wasted meant one less cent an employee would earn for you.
As soon as he entered the Reception Hall, Leon saw several familiar faces: the good-natured old man Dale, the not-yet-awakened warrior Carol, her wife-beating husband Ed, and their daughter Sophia.
Besides them, there were seven characters Leon had never seen in the original storyline: a Black family of three and a white family of four.
Including Shane, Lori, and Carl, who were still resting in the ward, fourteen people had come this time.
If he added the ten people he had recruited earlier, including Glenn and Merle, this protagonist camp had provided him with a total of twenty-four members. It really was a protagonist starter pack.
With a smile at the corners of his mouth and a kindly expression, Leon quietly observed everyone in the Reception Hall.
Andrea was in charge of the interviews. She was a recruiter for Umbrella Corporation. Although she had basically been used as an ordinary administrative employee until now, as a senior lawyer, Andrea still possessed considerable talent.
"Hello, everyone. I'm Andrea, and I'm in charge of this round of interviews."
"Before we begin the recruitment process, you need to read these documents and fill out the final form."
"I know you have many questions, but after reading this document, many of them will be answered."
Andrea took out more than a dozen bound documents and distributed them to every adult present. Leon also took one and flipped through it.
The very first page of the document described in solemn and serious language what kind of organization Umbrella Corporation was, what power it possessed, what ideals it believed in, and what goals it intended to accomplish.
The second page detailed the duties and benefits of Umbrella Corporation's three major departments, as well as the requirements for joining each department.
The third page introduced the relationship between employee ranks and Contribution Points, along with the supplies that could be exchanged for Contribution Points at Umbrella Corporation.
The fourth page was a detailed form to be filled out. It asked for age, gender, work experience, and all kinds of other information. It was extremely thorough.
Leon was quite satisfied as he read the document. Andrea truly was a senior lawyer. This recruitment document was an upgraded version of his original recruitment letter, and it looked much more formal and high-class than the verbal recruitment offered by other camps.
It showcased his own strength while also giving the recruits greater confidence.
The recruitment lasted for two hours. As a boss who trusted his subordinates, he merely watched everyone's performance in silence, assigning each of them a score in his mind and calculating how much money to offer them later.
The results of this recruitment were somewhat disappointing. Of the eleven people, excluding the two children, not a single one was willing to join the Security Department and become a combatant.
There were barely two technical personnel: the auto mechanic Dale and the construction engineer Bram, who was also the head of the Black family.
In the white family of four, the man of the house, David, was the head chef at a restaurant, while the woman was a preschool teacher. Although they both possessed professional skills, they didn't qualify as technical personnel in the current world. At most, they could be considered higher-level Logistics Personnel.
Even so, Leon was still in a very good mood. These were all healthy adults, and no matter what, they represented a decent source of labor.
The base was currently undergoing renovations and was badly short-handed. The more people who came, the better.
After the recruitment ended, Leon instructed Andrea to help these people join Umbrella Corporation as a collective. He also assigned the senior lawyer some miscellaneous tasks.
Under Andrea's eye roll, he took Amy with him to attend lunch with Professor Amrin.
