Background / History

Leon Castor founded the Umbrella Corporation after securing a partnership with Dr. Melpha at the CDC. Leon controlled the CDC’s surface buildings and resources, while Dr. Melpha maintained the facility’s operations. He named the organization after his goal of serving as “humanity’s umbrella” in the apocalypse 5.

The corporation initially presented itself as a self-rescue organization with a fortified refuge, medical personnel, supplies, water, and electricity. Its stated mission was to eliminate the virus, protect humanity, and rebuild civilization; in return for protection and benefits, survivors were expected to create value for the organization 6 7.

Early recruitment focused on the Quarry Camp and St. Joseph’s Nursing Home. The corporation accepted skilled survivors into its departments and agreed to cover 50% of living and medical expenses for elderly nursing-home residents, including those unable to work 7 9 10. By Chapter 28, its staff had reached 76, excluding four prisoners assigned as laborers 28.

The organization rapidly expanded through recruitment, scavenging, rescue operations, military action, and the absorption of survivor groups. It cleared commercial areas for supplies, seized chemical plants from raiders, built defenses around the CDC, and grew to over 230 members after recruiting professors and students from a polytechnic institute 14 27 40 41.

Its methods were not uniformly voluntary. In one instance, armed personnel surrounded a survivor camp and compelled its residents to work for a week building a steel wall around the CDC. The workers received food, lodging, wages, and the option to leave afterward, though many considered joining after experiencing the corporation’s living conditions 45.

After establishing Fort Benning as its military stronghold, Umbrella Corporation transferred its principal base there while retaining the Atlanta CDC as an essential research site for Zombie Virus studies 103 104. Later restructuring

Following the formation of the Human Alliance, the Security Department became the Military Department, responsible for territorial defense, resident protection, conquest, and other military operations. General William became its commander, with Merle, Daryl, Frank, Glenn, and Aji serving as colonels commanding legions 129.

The reformed government also created:
