Biology & Behavior
Ordinary zombies are decaying human corpses animated by the Zombie Virus. A bite or scratch can infect a survivor, leading to death and transformation within hours; at the time this danger is explained, no cure exists. 31
They generally lack intelligence, persistence being their defining behavior: they continue straining against barriers without understanding how to bypass them and pursue prey without fear or hesitation. 3 10 Their bodies can remain active despite severe decay, missing limbs, or catastrophic injuries. 44
Infection
Zombie attacks threaten survivors primarily through viral transmission rather than physical strength.
- Bites and scratches can transmit the Zombie Virus through even minor wounds. 31
- Ordinary zombies are neutralized by destroying the brain; eye sockets, temples, and skulls are frequent kill points. 3 10
- Amputation can prevent transformation if performed quickly after a bite, as demonstrated when Peggy's bitten forearm is removed. 38
- Some evolved fungal zombies can continue fighting after brain destruction, making conventional headshots insufficient. 184
Senses and Tracking
Ordinary zombies react strongly to conspicuous movement, loud sounds, and living scent.
- Their damaged sight and hearing prioritize fast movement and loud noise. 11
- Loud music, vehicle horns, rotor noise, and explosions can draw hordes over long distances. 13 36 90
- They can distinguish living humans from zombies by scent at roughly three to five meters. 11
- Zombies are less likely to notice people who move slowly, remain quiet, and conceal their scent with zombie blood, flesh, or scent spray. 11 108
- Zombie Scent Spray provides approximately two hours of olfactory concealment, but must be reapplied if washed away. 108
Baseline Physical Limits
Ordinary zombies are slow and clumsy compared with living humans, but their numbers make them dangerous.
- They struggle to turn quickly and can be isolated and eliminated in open terrain. 10
- Without a foothold, they cannot climb elevated platforms and may gather beneath them as easy targets. 10
- Dense indoor spaces reduce their ability to surround organized human fighters. 36
- They can overwhelm obstacles through sheer mass; at Fort Benning, thousands were pushed into a three-meter-deep pit by the horde behind them. 90
Radiation Absorption and Mutation
The Zombie Virus absorbs radiation from sunlight and the environment, using it as energy to sustain infected bodies. It can also accelerate reproduction and mimic human cellular functions. 74
Near heavily irradiated sites, this process can restore muscle activity and ligaments in decayed zombies, producing faster mutant forms with reflexes and mobility close to those of living humans. 74
Documented Variants
| Variant | Traits | Documented in |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Zombie | Slow, decayed, mindless infected that pursue prey through instinct; usually killed by brain destruction. | 10 31 |
| Radiation-Recovered Mutant Zombie | Shows little decay due to repaired muscles and ligaments; moves and attacks several times faster than ordinary zombies, approaching normal human physical ability. | 73 74 |
| Tank Zombie | Massive, heavily muscled mutant that charges targets with overwhelming force; later specimens possess hardened, stone-like muscle and resist light firearms unless the brain is damaged. | 78 164 |
| Hunter Zombie | Small, agile mutant capable of running, leaping, climbing, and ambushing with sharp claws. | 78 175 |
| Corroder | Bloated mutant capable of spitting highly corrosive bile that can burn through flesh and internal organs without rapid treatment. | 122 164 |
| Suicide / Explosive Zombie | Large, fast, hard-hitting mutant capable of self-detonation; one explosion deformed a shipping container. | 122 133 |
| Lord Zombie | Nearly human-looking mutant with black eyes, long claws, high strength, and a sense of smell capable of detecting Flesh Camouflage; some can hide among hordes and direct other zombies. | 122 143 163 |
| Fungal Zombie | Zombie infected by the fungal virus, marked by mushroom growths over the head and body; highly aggressive and able to sprint at near-human speed. | 151 155 156 |
| Sound-Seeking Zombie | Advanced fungal zombie with a woody outer layer, obscured facial features, extreme sound sensitivity, and fast crawling movement. Brain damage alone does not reliably stop it. | 177 184 |
| Coordinated Mutant Zombie | Mutants linked by mycelium-like threads around their brains; observed hibernating, using shields, setting ambushes, coordinating by role, and retreating on command. | 175 |
Countermeasures
| Threat or behavior | Effective response | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary zombie pursuit | Use noise-makers, drones, vehicles, alarms, or music to redirect hordes. | 10 13 90 |
| Close-range detection by smell | Apply Flesh Camouflage or Zombie Scent Spray; move slowly and avoid noise. | 11 108 |
| Horde encirclement | Funnel zombies through narrow gaps, use elevated ground, pits, trenches, and fortified firing positions. | 10 90 99 |
| Ordinary zombies | Target the brain with firearms, blades, or blunt weapons. | 3 10 |
| Tank Zombies | Use traps, deep pits, explosives, heavy weapons, or attacks capable of reaching the brain past their defenses. | 164 169 175 |
| Hunter Zombies | Maintain armored defenses and sustained fire against their leaps and ambushes. | 165 175 |
| Corroders and Suicide Zombies | Prioritize them with sniper fire before they can use bile or self-detonate near human positions. | 169 |
| Sound-Seeking Zombies | Use traps, metal barriers, flamethrowers, and ultrasonic devices to disrupt or contain their charge. | 184 |
History
One month after the outbreak, zombies dominate Atlanta and its surrounding areas, leaving only a tiny fraction of humanity alive. Early survivors learn that the creatures can be manipulated through sound, terrain, and scent concealment despite their infection risk. 1 10 31
At Senas Nuclear Power Plant, Umbrella Corporation discovers radiation-recovered mutants whose bodies have regained speed and mobility. Research concludes that radiation absorbed by the Zombie Virus can restore degraded tissue and sustain increasingly dangerous mutations. 73 74
The underground nuclear facility later reveals specialized mutants—including Tanks, Hunters, and Corroders—as well as an unknown tentacled creature capable of killing multiple elite warriors. 78 81 Subsequent expeditions encounter additional variants, including self-detonating zombies and Lord Zombies with unusually high intelligence and sensory ability. 122 133 143
A fungal virus emerging in Texas creates mushroom-covered zombies that sprint toward sound and threaten nearby Human Alliance outposts. Their later Sound-Seeker form proves especially difficult to eliminate, as destroyed brains do not immediately incapacitate them. 151 155 177 184
Mutant zombies in the radiation zone eventually display coordinated military-like behavior: hibernating in prepared positions, ambushing squads, using improvised shields, and withdrawing under apparent command. The Human Alliance cannot initially confirm the identity of their commander. 175 176
The threat escalates further with the Corpse Whisperer Empire, an evolved faction capable of communicating in English and commanding massive mutant zombie hordes. Its forces use camouflage, feints, night raids, and coordinated attacks against Human Alliance fortresses and supply lines. 186 197
Notable Quotes
“These monsters aren't scary. They move slowly, have no intelligence, and only know how to bite.” 10
“But don't underestimate their lethality. If they bite or scratch you, even with a tiny wound, you'll die within hours and become one of them.” 31
