Background

Before joining Umbrella Corporation, Daryl was expelled from high school for fighting and followed his older brother Merle through a life of street violence and unstable work. He had never held a proper job, was often hungry and broke, and hunted in the forest for food. 20

Daryl and Merle joined Leon Castor's organization early in the outbreak. Leon recognized the brothers as valuable combatants and made Daryl the deputy leader of Combat Team 1. Daryl accepted the responsibility with a quiet promise not to disappoint him. 9
