Background / History
Gwen originated from Earth-65 and was accidentally displaced to Earth-404. Having arrived only half a month before applying at Russell's bookstore, she struggled with the practical costs of living in an unfamiliar world and lacked the documentation needed to sign an employment contract. Russell hired her as the Reading Room manager, offered an advance, and gave her a room on the bookstore's seventh floor. 3 4
Before arriving on Earth-404, Gwen's friend Peter developed the Lizard Serum using her as a model, lost control to its side effects, and died in her arms. The event left her burdened by guilt and grief, especially when later incidents recalled it. 6
As Ghost-Spider, Gwen became active in New York, investigating the sudden rise in vampire attacks and helping defeat Obadiah Stane's Iron Monger alongside Tony Stark. She refused Tony's reward for saving him and Pepper Potts, insisting that helping people was simply what Ghost-Spider did. 3 4
On Halloween, Gwen met Earth-404's Helen Stacy and Little Gwen. Helen recognized her as the daughter from another world, allowing Gwen to finally embrace a version of her mother after years of separation. 16 Gwen later returned to Earth-65 and reunited with her father, George, who had spent her disappearance fearing that she had been taken by criminals. 21
Gwen continued operating between Earth-65 and Earth-404. When the Inheritors began hunting Spider-People throughout the Multiverse, she joined Russell and several alternate Spider-Men in responding to the threat. 70 71
Following the Battle of New York, Gwen helped form a street-hero team with Matt Murdock, Eileen Smith, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand. The group was later identified as the Phantom Spirit Band. 125 197
Appearance
Gwen is a blonde, blue-eyed young woman who typically operates in a distinctive black, white, and rose-red Spider Suit. 5 16
- Wears a hood and spider mask while acting as Ghost-Spider. 5
- Her Ghost-Spider suit is deliberately distinct from the common red-and-blue Spider-Man color scheme. 214
- Is noted to resemble Helen Stacy closely enough for Earth-404 Helen to recognize her immediately. 16
Personality
Gwen is compassionate and strongly guided by her idea of what Spider-Man represents: courage, justice, and helping others without exploiting her powers for personal profit. She rejects rewards for heroism and remains troubled by victims she cannot save. 4
Her early experiences as a hero made her cautious. Having been injured during her first two years of superhero work, she emphasizes that protecting oneself is necessary before protecting others. 205
Despite her independence and habit of leaving through windows to patrol alone, Gwen is receptive to trusted allies. She grows into a mentor and team captain for younger heroes such as Eileen, while remaining closely connected to Russell, George, Helen, and Little Gwen. 24 214
