Background / History
Loki was taken from Jotunheim as an infant by Odin and raised alongside Thor as Odin's second son. For much of his life, he was unaware that he was Laufey's son and a Frost Giant. He grew up in an Asgard that prized martial prowess while distrusting mages, leaving him repeatedly compared unfavorably with Thor in contests of strength, speed, and endurance rather than intelligence or spellcraft. 57
During Thor's aborted coronation, Loki was visibly uneasy about Thor becoming king. He privately considered gaining Russell's support to strengthen his own claim to the throne. 49 50
The Jotunheim expedition exposed Loki to Frost Giant power and led him to discover his heritage. He confronted Odin over being kept ignorant of his origins, Odin's favoritism toward Thor, and the likelihood that a Frost Giant would never be permitted to rule Asgard. Odin affirmed that Loki was his son, while admitting that Asgardian prejudice against mages had shaped his treatment of him. 57
Russell later invited Loki to Kamar-Taj. Loki accepted both to develop his magic and to cultivate an alliance beneficial to Asgard. At Kamar-Taj, he found respect and recognition unavailable to him at home, rapidly earning the title “Master Loki.” 59 81
Appearance
Loki is an Asgardian prince who can freely alter his appearance through transformation magic.
- Typically appears in formal Asgardian attire or armor.
- Wields the Eternal Spear Gungnir after Odin bestows it upon him. 161
- Can assume Kree, Skrull, Shi'ar, and other alien forms to avoid recognition. 99
- Often conceals his true body with illusions or invisibility during combat. 57 181
Personality
Loki is highly intelligent, competitive, and hungry for recognition. His resentment toward Thor is rooted less in a simple desire to usurp the throne than in a lifelong need to prove that he is equally worthy of respect. 57 183
He is manipulative and theatrical, readily using misinformation, disguises, clones, and misdirection to shape how others perceive events. He also enjoys admiration, particularly after receiving recognition as “Master Loki” at Kamar-Taj and from mortal audiences. 81 178
Despite his rivalry with Thor, Loki repeatedly shows concern for his brother and cooperates with him in crises. Their relationship becomes notably more functional over time, from competing at Kamar-Taj to jointly retrieving War Hammers and confronting larger threats. 52 61 164 300
