History

Samehada first appears in Suikazan Fuguki’s possession during the Seven Ninja Swordsmen’s arrival at the front. Fuguki later uses it to drain opponents’ chakra, replenish his own reserves, and neutralize a combined ninjutsu assault 58 229 231.

After defeating Fuguki in the Mizukage Succession Battle, Hozuki Mangetsu takes Samehada. The sword initially resists him, then accepts his Water Release chakra. During Mangetsu’s fight with Karatachi Yagura, Samehada recognizes the chakra of the Three-Tails, Isobu—identified as its original master—and rebels against Mangetsu. Yagura subsequently wields it 244 246 248 250.

Yagura later returns Samehada to the Hozuki clan, which sends it back toward Fuguki. Fuguki eventually reclaims it, but Kisame Hoshigaki kills him with the sword and gains its approval 276 277 397. During Kirigakure’s civil war, Qi Shuang takes Samehada after Kisame’s defeat. He returns it to Kisame when assigning him to guard the Six-Tails 510 638 639.

Appearance

Samehada is a massive weapon usually concealed in bandages. Unwrapped, it looks unlike an ordinary sword 58 230.

• Its gray-black body has protruding barbs and a gaping mouth; its narrower tail resembles a hilt 230 244.
• Barbs can extend from the blade or hilt, including when Samehada resists someone holding it 232 244 510.

Personality

Samehada has a complete living body but acts largely on simple instincts rather than complex thought. It responds to a prospective wielder’s chakra and to goodwill conveyed through chakra; it especially favors Water Release chakra 244. Its attachment to Isobu overrides its acceptance of Mangetsu, and it shows excitement when reunited with Kisame 248 638.

Abilities & Skills

Chakra absorption

• Drains chakra from living targets on contact and from ninjutsu, disrupting the jutsu’s structure. It withstands attacks from more than a dozen Mist ninja this way 231 247.
• Converts absorbed chakra into a form usable by its wielder and returns it through the hilt. Kisame also directs stored chakra into healing his injuries 229 503.
• Can draw chakra through Fuguki’s chakra-linked hair while he restrains opponents 229.
• Brief contact during taijutsu limits how much chakra it can drain from a living opponent 232.

Barbs and reach

• Scrapes rather than cleanly cuts: Fuguki drags its extended barbs across an opponent’s kunai and hands, stripping away metal and flesh 232.
• Its hilt can extend, sending the blade outward while Fuguki holds it 232.

Man-Sword Fusion

• Merges with its wielder to produce a half-human, half-fish form that breathes underwater and moves with greater agility there 504 664.
• Allows chakra absorption through physical contact without requiring sword strikes 504.
• Is particularly effective underwater; Fuguki did not use it in a land battle where wielding Samehada directly was more useful 504.
• Ends when Kisame loses synchronization with Samehada after severe injury 508.

Relationships

• Isobu, the Three-Tails — Samehada’s original master. It recognizes Isobu’s chakra through Yagura and rebels against Mangetsu 248.
• Suikazan Fuguki — Longtime wielder who uses its absorption in combat, later loses and reclaims it, and is ultimately killed with it 229 276 397.
• Hozuki Mangetsu — Gains its approval through Water Release chakra, but cannot retain control when Isobu takes over Yagura’s body 244 248.
• Karatachi Yagura — Wields Samehada after Isobu reasserts his connection to it; later returns it to the Hozuki clan 250 276.
• Kisame Hoshigaki — Gains its approval after killing Fuguki and uses Man-Sword Fusion extensively in water combat 397 504 664.
