Background

Sakura Mai is the sole daughter of the Sakura Family’s generation and inherited its power of annihilation, as well as Tennōji Jūrei’s Sword of Madness. She completed family swordsmanship training before entering the academy, making her older than many students in her grade. 84 285

Her Sword of Will lets her resist much of Soga Toyura’s Mental Manipulation, a trait that enabled their long-standing friendship despite Toyura’s tendency to keep others at a distance. Mai became Toyura’s classmate and roommate, and for a time was effectively her only close friend. 66 74

Mai initially intervened in the estrangement between Toyura and Su Youzi by forcing Toyura to confront her own feelings and meet Youzi directly. Although her methods were intentionally provocative, Mai wanted the sisters to reconcile rather than remain trapped by Toyura’s cold behavior. 66 67 73

After meeting Youzi in person, Mai quickly becomes protective of her and is recruited as an Operator after accepting Youzi’s embrace. She embraces the role of “Sister Mai,” promising to protect Youzi with her life. 86 87

Personality

Mai projects the image of a composed, chivalrous Knight Princess, but she is neither entirely solemn nor entirely innocent. Beneath her polished exterior is a lazy streak, a sharp sense of humor, and a willingness to manipulate situations—especially when she believes Soga Toyura is avoiding a problem. 66 67 599

She is deeply considerate of the people she cares about. Mai supports Toyura through emotional crises, attempts to repair Toyura and Youzi’s relationship, and repeatedly places herself between danger and her companions.
