Background / History

Altered Users are Ability Users who have been corrupted by Calamity Beasts, contaminated sources, higher-ranking Altered Users, or other forms of Calamity influence. Their transformation is known as entering an Anomalous state or falling into the Abyss. The conflict between humanity, Calamity Beasts, and Altered Users has continued for seven hundred years 11.

The transformation greatly increases the subject’s power. Even the weakest First Sequence Altered User reaches at least Level 10 after corruption, regardless of their former strength 11 19. The process usually destroys the subject’s rationality and turns them against former allies, although rare individuals retain or recover their minds 114.

Altered Users are frequently connected to the Eye of Insight, a cult that believes the Anomalous state represents the correct direction of human evolution. The cult has attempted to induce Anomalous states artificially, producing failed experiments, Walking Corpses, and other abnormal lifeforms 19 51 128.

Low-level Altered Users may sometimes be restored. Su Youzi’s defeat of the Anomalous: Puppet removes its anomalous material and returns it to its original form 11. However, restoration normally leaves the former Altered User unable to continue advancing through the ordinary Ability User system 43 444.

Appearance

Altered Users possess highly variable appearances, but their bodies are commonly covered by black or black-purple anomalous material. First Sequence examples are almost completely covered, with the material forming a mask over the face and leaving only dark-golden vertical pupils visible 11.

Anomalous State

The Anomalous state is the defining transformation of an Altered User.

• Greatly increases the subject’s ability level, with successful cases reaching at least the First Sequence 11 19.
• May grant new innate abilities, altered weaponry, and individualized forms 38 500.
• Commonly damages the subject’s mind and causes hostility toward former allies 114.
• Can sometimes be controlled, although controllable Anomalies are described as exceptionally rare 488.
• May be induced or restored through an Anomalous Activation Device, though the process is dangerous and requires powerful negative emotions 128.

Calamity Domain

A Calamity Domain is an innate field associated with Altered Users and Calamity Beasts.

• Creates a dark red or otherwise corrupted area around the user 11.
• Continuously reduces the stamina of those inside it 11.
• Causes an affected Ability User to begin entering an Anomalous state once their stamina is exhausted 11.
• Weakens conventional weapons, which can inflict only negligible damage against stronger Altered Users 11.
• Grows larger and more oppressive as the user’s strength increases 11.

Anomalous Armament

Altered Users can manifest weapons and body armor from their transformed flesh.

• Weapons may grow from flesh, blood, and bone 15.
• These weapons are composed of Calamity Crystals rather than ordinary metal 15.
• Armaments can possess unique forms and powers tied to the user’s identity, such as the Nightmare Singer’s distinctive Black Koi Skirt 38.
• Low-level anomalous armament can sometimes be forcibly stripped, allowing the user to return to humanity and heal their injuries 444.
• Destroying or removing the armament does not necessarily restore the user’s ability to advance normally 43 444.

Individual Anomalous Abilities

Altered Users do not share a single ability set; their powers are shaped by their former abilities, corruption, and personal traits.

• Nightmare Singer: Uses the Erosion Domain and attacks through dreams and mental influence 38.
• Dominator Queen: Freezes targets with her gaze and commands the frozen entities, including Eclipses 778.
• Yarai Kenha: Possesses the Eye of Insight, Abyss Sword, and the Ghost-type ability Corrupting Darkness 500 523.
• Seat of Evil: Reaches the Sixth Sequence and is capable of overwhelming large-scale opponents before being defeated by Su Youzi 319 321.

The Puppet Incident

An Altered User appears in Shiritsu Megumi Garden Academy’s combat training hall and unfolds a Calamity Domain. Identified as the Level 10 Anomalous: Puppet, it attacks Su Youzi and Saotome Yukina. Su Youzi targets the eye-shaped weakness on its abdomen and restores the Puppet to its original form by defeating it 11.

The Eye of Insight Investigation

The Puppet’s eye marking leads investigators to the Eye of Insight, a cult devoted to creating artificial Anomalous states. The cult’s experiments include life-draining monsters, Walking Corpses, and attempts to overcome the apparent limitations of human transformation 19 51.

Nightmare Singer

Soga Ishikawa Kiyomi is corrupted after being manipulated by an Eye of Insight operative. As the Second Sequence Nightmare Singer, she invades Su Youzi’s dream through an Erosion Domain. Su Youzi survives because of the Guardian of Domination, while Kujo Ryuko detects the Altered User and guards Su Youzi’s room 38 39.

The Abyss and the Seats

The highest-ranking Altered entities include beings connected to Seats and Thrones. The Sixth Sequence Seat of Evil is defeated and consumed by Su Youzi, who gains experience and advances her Reverse Logic Hand from Level 24 to Level 30 321. A Seventh Sequence Anomaly known as the Garan Seat is later defeated during the transition into a new era 435.

The Apocalypse

During the gray-mist apocalypse, most Ability Users lose access to their powers as the Origin Witch is affected. Altered Users and Eclipses continue attacking cities, while the Dominator Queen freezes and commands the Eclipses with her gaze 778. Her appearance emphasizes the altered balance of power between humanity, Ability Users, and Anomalies.
