Geography

  • Much of the country is desert. Its capital is surrounded by sand, and the Death Sand Sea lies in its northwest 83 294.
  • Sunagakure was built inside a canyon whose steep walls restricted access chiefly to its northern and southern passages 289.
  • The Land of Rivers lay between the Land of Wind and the Land of Fire 121.

Government and Sunagakure

The daimyo controlled much of Sunagakure’s funding. Repeated cuts left the village short of resources and forced Fourth Kazekage Rasa to use Magnet Release to collect gold dust to support it. Rasa’s relationship with Daimyo Sato Masaki deteriorated further when Sato demanded action against the expanding Land of Stars while Rasa argued that Sunagakure needed time to recover from war 83 219.

History

After the rebellion in the neighboring Land of Bears, the Land of Wind avoided direct intervention. Sunagakure instead strengthened border patrols, which occasionally clashed with Hoshigakure ninja 83. As the Land of Stars expanded westward, its border reached the Land of Wind. Sato demanded that Rasa curb its growth, but the Kazekage refused to commit his impoverished village to an immediate offensive 219.

Conflict escalated in the Death Sand Sea. Following heavy Sunagakure losses, the death of adviser Ebizo, and the capture of Gaara, the village’s One-Tail jinchūriki, the Land of Wind declared war on the Land of Stars. Rasa sought support from the Land of Fire and the Land of Earth, while Sunagakure requested troops from its ally Konoha 289. The Land of Earth did not enter a formal alliance with the Land of Wind 292.

The Star Ninja Army routed Sunagakure’s main force, captured Rasa, and advanced on the village. Konoha reinforcements arrived, but Hoshinin forces attacked Sunagakure’s northern passage 298. The Land of Stars subsequently occupied Sunagakure and began taking over the country’s major cities and transport hubs. Sato Masaki and close aides fled to the Land of Fire under Konoha escort 301 302.

After Annexation

  • The Land of Stars incorporated the former country as Wind Prefecture and began establishing new administrative divisions 302 309.
  • Former Sunagakure ninja joined the Land of Stars’ ninja forces, while children from Sunagakure, including Temari and Kankuro, traveled to Star City for education at Hoshinin Academy 309 517.
  • Wind Prefecture became the site of a desert-management project. Planners sought to limit the desert’s advance toward the Nether River Plains through terrain work, irrigation, afforestation, and ninjutsu-assisted oasis creation 309.
