These insects primarily fed on animal feces, though they also ate fungi and carrion, while a few species fed on pollen or tree sap.
They often used the saw-toothed horns on their heads to dig into and cut feces, gathered it with their forelegs, and then rolled it into balls with their hind legs.
Throughout the process, they pushed and rolled the balls along, constantly reshaping them and removing coarse fibers to make the dung balls denser.
It was precisely because of this habit of transporting and storing dung balls that they had earned their name.
