The bashful look lasted only an instant. Kukulus quickly reined in the emotion in his eyes and gave them a slight nod. "Welcome. Lady Gleipnir and Lord Eya have been waiting inside for some time."
Though he had greeted them both, Kukulus's gaze lingered more on Laplace.
Laplace said blandly, "Lead the way."
Kukulus nodded. After tossing Kuntela a look, he turned and headed for the door.
"I shall take my leave for now." Kuntela bowed respectfully to Angel and Laplace, then said to Angel, "The Crystal Shell you requested—I will have Alshanjo bring over a sample shortly."
With that, Kuntela flapped his wings and flew down beneath the cloud staircase.
Only after Kuntela had left did Angel and Laplace follow Kukulus into the Cloud Grotto shrouded in gray mist.
"Where is Luigi?" A faint voice came from ahead. It was Kukulus speaking.
Laplace said, "Sleeping."
That single word, "sleeping," came without explanation or further elaboration. Kukulus pondered it for a long while before hesitantly asking, "Did he go to the Dream Crystal Plain?"
Laplace made no sound, merely nodding slightly, without caring whether Kukulus ahead had seen it.
Though Kukulus did not turn around, the fact that he did not pursue the matter showed that he had certainly sensed Laplace's answer. He was silent now only because he did not know how to communicate with Laplace.
Laplace's identity was far too extraordinary... Respect was necessary, but Kukulus could not bring himself to cast aside all dignity and flatter her as Alshanjo did.
What was more, Laplace's attitude was exceedingly aloof. No matter how warm a greeting was, it could easily end up pressed against a cold backside.
