Imu had not expected Edward Newgate to suddenly reach the realm of Colorless Haki.
He had called him here specifically to expose Marshall D. Teach's true nature.
Who would have thought Edward Newgate's paternal love would run so deep that he could even forgive his own son for killing him?
He even intended to teach Teach properly and set him back on the right path, on the grounds that anything was possible.
He also believed that his own death was due to being too weak. If he had been strong enough, Teach would only have obediently remained a good son.

Edward Newgate calmed himself, raised his hands, and stared at the soft white glow covering his skin, his face full of astonishment.
This power was both familiar and unfamiliar to him, yet he could sense the immense strength contained within it.
"That is Colorless Haki. You have already entered the domain of a Martial God."
From high upon the Empty Throne, Imu gave the answer in a calm tone.
Then he asked, "So, do you plan to enter the Martial God Palace, or continue serving as an Army Headquarters admiral?"
Edward Newgate immediately fell into thought.
From a personal standpoint, he would rather resign from his position as an admiral and become a freer Martial God. He could even spar with Garp every day.
But he was still a father.
Now that he knew Teach's nature and Teach intended to join the Army,
it would be best for him to remain and personally keep an eye on that unruly fool of a son.
So Edward Newgate gave his answer.
"Lord Imu, I hope to continue serving as an Army Headquarters admiral, and I hope Teach can remain by my side. Please grant this request!"
