Background / History
Garp reached top-tier strength at 38 and joined forces with Roger at 40 to defeat Rocks D. Zebek at God Valley. The World Government's upper ranks knew of his Conqueror's Haki from that battle, although few Marines later witnessed him use it. His victory and rescue of Celestial Dragons earned him an Ist First-Class Medal, which he chose not to wear 264 412 706 1073.
During his pursuit of the Roger Pirates, Garp repeatedly fought opponents whose strength approached his own. Bullet remembered him as a fighter capable of rivaling Roger; Garp later complained that Roger usually fought while retreating rather than committing to a prolonged duel. When suitable sparring partners were unavailable, he trained his fists against mountains 14 61 1081.
Garp raised Dragon with his severe Fist of Love Training, making Life Return instinctive for him by age ten. Before Roger's execution, he also agreed to protect Roger's wife, Rouge, and their unborn child. Rouge was already staying with Tsuru, and Garp intended for the child to attend school in Marineford and become a Marine without knowing his father's identity 7 66.
Appearance
Garp has a towering, muscular build, described as nearly three meters tall. His clothing continues to reflect his Marine background even after retirement 2453 2455.
- Admiral's uniform: Black suit beneath a white Coat of Justice 659.
- Distinctive epaulets: Crimson-black epaulets distinguish his coat from those of other admirals 264.
- Martial God attire: Wears a Martial God cloak over a black suit during the lunar battle with Boros 1561.
- Colorless Haki: Appears as flowing silver-gray light, initially described as gray with faint silver specks 1081 1082.
- Unarmed fighting style: Carries no weapon during the confrontation with Shikoutazer 667.
Personality
Garp is loud, irreverent, and frequently careless about formalities. He barges into Kong's office carrying senbei, damages doors despite repeated reprimands, and picks his nose during serious meetings. He prefers his crew's familiar “Admiral Garp” to the more formal “Admiral Iron Fist” 21 69 180 678 1066.
His appetite for challenging combat outweighs ordinary caution. Learning that other worlds might contain enemies stronger than himself excites him—even when Kong warns that their combined forces might be unable to win. He enjoys gravity training and regards pushing Noah up from the seabed as a rewarding physical challenge 180 217 720.
Garp despises the Celestial Dragons' abuses and rejects becoming an admiral if it means cleaning up their misconduct. Nevertheless, he can judge individuals separately: Mihawk surprises him as a Celestial Dragon he actually finds agreeable. His opposition to inherited nobility also coexists with support for a merit-based military system 181 280 680.
His rough treatment of family conceals deep concern for their futures. He wants Ace and Luffy to become military leaders, but gradually recognizes that Luffy's original pirate dream centers on freedom and adventure rather than wrongdoing. Beneath his blunt exterior, he is also capable of restraint: when Redfield's maneuvering involves Dragon, Garp consults trusted allies and seeks Imu's approval instead of immediately attacking 1960 2134 2454.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Arts and Iron Fist
Garp relies principally on his body and Haki rather than weapons or Devil Fruit powers. Early in the story, he stops Bullet's two-handed attack with one fist and sends him crashing into a hillside with the other 14 667 2175.
- Massive lifting strength: Single-handedly pushes Noah from a depth of ten thousand meters to the surface 217.
- Geppo: Moves through the air using the technique before revealing Colorless Haki 1081.
- Extreme endurance: Fights Shiki for six days and Bullet for four days 711 1081.
- Planetary destructive capacity: States that he can destroy an Earth-sized planet, though doing so requires effort and time 2159.
- Physical limits: Before his Colorless Haki breakthrough, Bullet's youth and superior natural physique threaten to decide their otherwise closely matched fight 1074 1081.
| Technique | Documented use |
|---|---|
| Fist Bone: Iron Fist | Disperses Big Mom's super tsunami with a single punch 100. |
| Seabed Drop | Drives Bullet into the sea during their destructive hand-to-hand battle 1074. |
| Fist Bone Impact | Used against Boros on the lunar battlefield 1561. |
| Galaxy Impact | Meets Boros's moon-destroying Meteor Cannon head-on; later clashes with Redfield's Fortune Rotation 1562 2456. |
| Fist Bone Meteor | Unleashes a barrage of silver-gray fist strikes against Redfield's golden sword beams 2456. |
Three-Color Haki
Before awakening Colorless Haki, Garp brings all three conventional forms of Haki to their peak 1074 1082.
- Armament Haki: Uses hardening and independently develops Internal Destruction. Initially knows how to perform the latter without knowing how to teach it 14 252.
- Conqueror's Haki: Releases a black-red, lightning-filled pressure that clashes evenly with Bullet's opening aura 1073.
- Observation Haki: Forms one of the three necessary components of his later Colorless Haki 1082.
- Ability resistance: Expects his Armament Haki to dispel Devil Fruit effects, but fails against the much stronger power controlling him and other admirals 672.
Colorless Haki
Colorless Haki unifies peak Armament, Observation, and Conqueror's Haki into a qualitatively higher spiritual power. Garp's awakening places him beyond the existing admiral-level fighters, but not near Imu's full strength 1082 1086.
- Enhanced offense and defense: Defeats the then-current Bullet with one punch; later withstands Redfield's Conqueror's Haki without injury 1082 2455.
- Materialized footholds: Stands and moves through the sky on condensed Haki. This is not unrestricted flight 1081 1082.
- Remote manipulation: Wraps the defeated Bullet in Haki and makes him float behind him 1082.
- Expanded perception: Its sensory abilities exceed ordinary Observation Haki, although Redfield's luck manipulation still enables unusual evasions 2456.
- Protective barriers: Projects a thick Haki barrier against Redfield's sword swarm and counters the awakened Luck-Luck Fruit's effects 2456.
- Spiritual cultivation: Receives meditation instruction and Imu's accumulated Colorless Haki cultivation experience to deepen his Sixth Sense 1086 1088.
- Upper limit: Remains far from the Seventh Sense as of his later victory over Bullet. Imu's pure Haki can penetrate his defenses and destroy both arms 1086 2175.
Pulverize / Atomic Disintegration
Garp's Colorless Haki carries an exceptional destructive effect called Pulverize, later examined as atomic-level Disintegration. Imu discovers that Garp possessed this effect from the moment he awakened Colorless Haki, despite remaining well below the Seventh Sense normally associated with such abilities 1561 2175.
- Breaks through Bullet's weaker Colorless Haki and electrical reinforcement 2175.
- Erases matter with missed punches, leaving smooth lunar craters hundreds of kilometers wide 2175.
- Gives him the offensive advantage against Boros's immense energy reserves during their initial exchanges 1561.
- Leads Imu to acknowledge that Garp's innate Haki talent surpasses his own 2175.
Life Return and Regeneration
Garp masters Life Return and continues fighting despite substantial injuries. Later battles show his destroyed fists regenerating rapidly enough for repeated exchanges 1081 1561.
- Combat recovery: Regenerates injuries during his fight with Redfield 2456.
- Cost: Frequent regeneration consumes significant energy and stamina 1561.
- Limits: Life Return and Armament Haki do not prevent serious injuries during prolonged combat with Bullet 1081.
Fist of Love Training
Garp's training emphasizes making Life Return and combat instinctive before teaching more advanced Physical Arts. Dragon's childhood training produces extraordinary bodily control, stamina, and vitality 66 1960.
- Subjects Luffy to dangerous training in the Teigu World, including pursuit by Deviljho 1960.
- Entrusts Ace to Boros with instructions to make Life Return and fighting instinctive 1960.
- Agrees to share his method with the military academy after the fate projection demonstrates Luffy's recovery from poisoning 2140 2141.
- Reverses the established sequence of learning Physical Arts first and Life Return afterward, potentially making later training substantially easier 2141.
Command and Persuasion
Garp can set aside his casual manner when operational decisions matter. He directs Bullet and Crocodile to defend the Star Gate during the Rumbling campaign and later evaluates Marine command candidates alongside Zephyr and Tsuru 448 2545.
- Recruitment: Appeals to Boros's desire for worthy opponents by explaining the World Government's powerful personnel and the Myriad Worlds 1569.
- Political restraint: Handles Redfield's provocation through consultation and an authorized duel rather than an uncontrolled confrontation 2454.

Colorless Haki and the Martial God Palace
Garp's extended battle with Bullet appears to favor the younger fighter until Garp reveals Colorless Haki and ends the contest with one punch. His breakthrough prompts Imu to summon him alone to Pangaea Castle 1081 1082 1085.
Imu's test strike destroys both of Garp's arms and demonstrates that Colorless Haki is not the final realm.
