• William brought Yelena and Ivan downstairs so the family and Spartans could meet them.
• John asked whether the babies had names, and Andre proudly announced that they were Yelena and Ivan.
• Yelena and Ivan began crying, so the maternity nurses carried them back to the master bedroom.
• Hunk and the Alphas arrived with food, and everyone celebrated the babies’ safe delivery.

Umbrella and the UNSC expanded their space infrastructure, defenses, containment capabilities, and plans for colonies beyond the Solar System. After discovering an Earth-like planet with primitive life and rich titanium deposits in Epsilon Eridani, William Russell named it Reach and designated it as a future stronghold.

• Umbrella completed Moon City, a vast inhabited satellite colony, and halted plans to build more because of its cost.
• Umbrella and the UNSC constructed an orbital Railgun Array around Earth, with 77 of 140 stations already in service by early 2015.
• Wang Zhaofeng oversaw the completion of a Space Containment Center near Cygnus X-1, and Captain Andrew Mike led the newly organized Omega unit assigned to protect it.

William reflected on Umbrella’s growth and the power of its flagship, the Endless, before Serena told him the fleet had reached Moon City and Dr. Halsey wanted him home. He declined to inspect the new city yet and hurried toward a family dispute involving Yelena and Mylon.

• William reviewed Umbrella’s military strength, including its 255 Godbodies and the Endless, and considered how its influence had reshaped the world.
• Serena visited William aboard the Endless and explained that she could control the ship’s normal navigation from anywhere.
• Serena told William the fleet had arrived near Moon City, but William decided to wait until its colonial population exceeded ten million before inspecting it.

William returned to his quarters aboard the Endless and found Yelena teasing Mylon while Ivan asked to test his strength and speed. William sent Mylon with Ivan to the training area and took Yelena home to see Halsey.

• William returned to his quarters and found Yelena tugging Mylon's ears while Ivan watched.

William returned home after Yelena bullied Mylon, and Halsey showed him that their four-year-old twins had extraordinary genes and abilities. Halsey arranged for Ivan to visit Minos and experience Sparta’s low-intensity training, leaving William surprised by her plan.

• William found Yelena pretending to be hurt and reminded her to stop bullying Mylon.
• William brought Yelena to Halsey, then sent her off to play so he and Halsey could talk.
• Halsey showed William her findings that Ivan and Yelena had near-perfect genes, exceptional talents, and powerful immune systems.

• Halsey reported that the barrier rejected contact, disrupted aircraft, and had caused people fleeing Egypt to speak of hell and demons.
• William summoned Michel Victor, Shark Company, and Blue Team to plan a reconnaissance mission near the Pyramid of Khufu and the Sphinx.
• William selected an uninhabited forest south of Cairo as the drop zone and ordered the troops to withdraw from the barrier on foot.
• Michel led Shark Company into Drop Pods as John, Carl, and Mylon boarded Spartan Pods, leaving their Mjolnir Armor behind.

John led a Spartan reconnaissance team into Egypt's red barrier after the UNSC bombarded the region, then surveyed the area near their landing site. From a dune, the team saw Cairo split open and a vast silhouette looming nearby.

• Cortana reported that communications would fail inside the barrier, and John planned to test individual communications after the Drop Pods landed.
• Missiles and four Yamato Cannon volleys struck Egypt, but Cortana reported no abnormal phenomena, and John said the team had to investigate from within the barrier.
• John's Drop Pod passed through the barrier, communications with the Infinity failed, and he activated the thrusters before landing in an oasis.
• John equipped himself and ordered Michel to secure the perimeter while Blue Team assembled a Warthog and followed him to scout the nearby dunes.
• John, Mylon, and Carl saw Cairo apparently split open and a huge silhouette at its outskirts, prompting Mylon to compare it to the entrance to Hell.

John and Blue Team discovered that Cairo had been replaced by a massive rift guarded by an undead army, and they shared their reconnaissance footage with Michel and Shark Company. The forces prepared to attack the Ghost Soldiers, with Shark Company advancing in Warthogs while John planned to lead Blue Team toward Cairo for closer investigation.

• John asked Cortana to investigate Cairo, but she said she would need to approach the rift to scan it.
• Carl spotted humans being escorted toward the rift by skeleton soldiers and mummy commanders, and John ordered Cortana to record the sighting for Dr. Halsey.
• John returned to the landing zone and told Michel that Cairo had vanished and an undead army guarded the rift.
• John ordered Michel to lead Shark Company in Warthogs to distract the anomaly's forces while he led Blue Team on foot toward Cairo.
• Michel and Shark Company boarded thirty-four Warthogs and drove across the desert toward the highway to engage the Ghost Soldiers.

John and the Umbrella forces rescued a group of captives from the Ghost Soldiers on the desert road. After learning the attackers were believed to serve Anubis, John sent Blue Team toward the outskirts of Cairo to gather information about the god of death.

• A traveler tried to escape the Ghost Soldiers escorting the captives, but a mummy killed him with a spear through the heart.
• John, Michel, and the Mad-Toothed Sharks arrived in Warthogs and destroyed the Ghost Soldiers with their weapons, freeing the captives.
• Most of the freed people fled into the desert, while UNSC soldiers, police officers, and a few travelers waited for the convoy.
• John questioned Sergeant Safir Aziz Rahman, who reported that the Hell Guards had emerged from underground, disabled communications and aircraft, and quickly overwhelmed his regiment.
• Rahman said the Hell Guards targeted human hearts and were believed to be guards of Anubis, the God of Death.
• John ordered Carl and Mylon to prepare Blue Team to investigate the outskirts of the former Cairo.

John, Carl, and Mylon traveled toward Cairo to investigate the anomaly while Michel led Umbrella’s forces and survivors away to draw attention. From a ruined city wall, John witnessed the Hell Guards weighing a captive woman’s heart against a feather.

• Michel armed the surviving soldiers and police, then led them with the Sharks to search for the escort convoy and divert attention from John’s team.
• John consulted Cortana’s map and led Carl and Mylon on a forced march toward a location near the Sphinx.
• The Spartans reached an abandoned city and found signs that Cairo’s residents and tourists had been taken to the rift.
• John surveyed Cairo and saw six giant wolf-headed creatures guarding the roads to a crimson-lit rift.
• John watched a smaller wolf-headed figure remove a woman’s heart, weigh it against a white feather, and return it to her after the feather proved heavier.

John and Blue Team witnessed wolf-headed creatures weighing human hearts and sending the dead into a world they identified as Duat, then regrouped with Michel and Shark Company. They chose to flee east toward the Israeli border so they could report the anomalies to the Infinite, and the convoy set out.

• John, Carl, and Mylon watched a wolf-headed creature judge a woman and a youth by weighing their hearts, then saw the youth burned and turned into a Skeleton Soldier.
• Cortana analyzed the scene and concluded that the red-glowing Hell Rift might be an entrance to another world, while John ordered Blue Team to regroup with Michel and withdraw.
• John and Blue Team rendezvoused with Michel and Shark Company, where Michel showed a map of Hell Guard concentrations and isolated resistance forces.
• John and Michel rejected the longer south and southwest routes and chose to retreat east toward the Israeli-Egyptian border.
• John assigned Blue Team to cover the convoy’s rear while Michel and Shark Company protected the civilians, then ordered the Warthogs to move out.

John and the reconnaissance convoy escaped the Cairo barrier and delivered their data to the UNSC, which prepared a large-scale operation against the Anubises. At the war council aboard the Infinity, Serena outlined the forces and plan for the Containment Operation, scheduled to begin at 21:30.

• John ordered Carl to monitor the Anubises and Mylon to watch for threats as the Warthog convoy drove toward Suez.
• Cortana told John that the barrier had expanded by several kilometers, and the convoy crossed its edge into Israel.

• William told the soldiers to assist UNSC forces and agents, protect civilians, and leave the anomaly itself to the God Body Squad.
• Fifteen God Bodies and a large force of Drop Pods entered Earth's atmosphere, carrying Umbrella and UNSC troops toward Egypt.
• After communications returned, the Drop Pods divided toward their designated landing sites while Athena and four companies stayed near the God Bodies.

• Six Divine Bodies struck the giant Anubises while Helljumpers and Heavy Soldiers landed around Cairo and attacked the Ghost Soldiers, rescuing the imprisoned humans.
• William and the Spartans finished off the giant Anubises, and William destroyed the one beneath his Divine Body with Gauss Cannons and a Ship Slicer.
• William learned that the barrier still surrounded Egypt after the Anubises died and ordered the troops to clear nearby enemies while protecting the surviving humans.

• John jumped the mech into the rift, and after communications failed, he used the Particle Beam Sword to open a tunnel through the blood-red magma.
• Cortana determined that the tunnel extended forty-five kilometers through Earth’s crust and had been excavated during the anomaly, suggesting a threat at least Exafanistei-class.
• John and Cortana descended through the tunnel, agreeing to prioritize reconnaissance and find a route back unless combat became necessary.
• John flew into a vast cavern and spotted countless blank-faced people in modern clothing walking toward another opening.
• John landed to examine the people, and Cortana began scanning the cavern and the group.

John and Cortana discovered that the vast underground realm was a peaceful, habitable landscape containing an enormous ancient city. After a mysterious voice invited them into the pyramid temple, John and Cortana headed inside to meet its source.

• Cortana reported that the people in the passage were alive and may have been under hypnosis or mind control, while John continued toward the tunnel’s end.
• John and Cortana emerged into a vast realm with a blue sky, thriving landscapes, animals, and a huge ancient city centered around a pyramid temple.
• The wooden-faced people regained their awareness and were escorted toward the city by armed soldiers who ignored John’s God Body.
• John prepared to attack the giant Anubises guarding the temple, but a deep voice told him not to approach everything with hostility and invited him inside.
• The Anubises moved aside, and John decided to enter the temple with Cortana despite the presence of a heat source larger than their God Body.

John and Cortana met the true Anubis in his temple at the center of Duat. Anubis questioned whether humanity should continue living, and Cortana’s case for humanity left him reconsidering its worth.

• John and Cortana entered the temple and found Anubis, who revealed that the figures outside were copies he had created.
• Anubis said he had allowed them to approach because he wanted to discuss whether humanity needed to keep living.
• Anubis showed them Duat and explained that he judged the dead, then argued that few humans now passed his weighing and that Earth needed cleansing.
• John insisted humanity deserved to survive, citing its unity and determination to build a better future.
• Cortana presented evidence of the UNSC, humanity’s expansion into space, and Umbrella’s work to protect people and the environment.

John and Cortana persuaded Anubis to give humanity another chance, and he teleported them back above Cairo after lifting the barrier. The chapter ended with Umbrella classifying Anubis as God-class after his attack killed approximately fourteen million people and destroyed Cairo’s landmarks.

• Anubis acknowledged Umbrella’s protection of humanity and, influenced by John’s fearless faith, decided to give humanity another chance.
• Anubis teleported John and Cortana above Cairo, where they saw the barrier had vanished but the city lay devastated and a massive fissure had been sealed.
• John told Cortana he believed Anubis had intended to warn humanity rather than exterminate it, while Cortana lamented the immense death toll.
• John reported the outbreak’s resolution to William and ordered Cortana to send their underground data to the Infinity for analysis.
