Geography

The Southern Wilderness lies south of Zhennan Pass, the border pass between Great Xuan and demon territory. A hundred-li “Domain of Courtesy” beyond the pass contains no forts or cities from either side; only after crossing it does one enter demon territory proper 451 452.

Terrain and regions

• Known as the Hundred Thousand Great Mountains, it is a vast region of mountains, valleys, forests, plains, lakes, and demon territories; crossing its breadth can take days even at high speed 512 618.
• The western wilderness is heavily forested because of abundant rainfall and formerly contained the territories of the Peacock Clan’s Five-Colored Immortal Domain and the Elephant Clan 573.
• The southeastern Green Grasslands are home to the Koma, Ox, Deer, Sheep, and related clans; the Ox Clan’s strength makes the area comparatively stable 548.
• Jingze Lake and Mount Fangcun became a major political and cultural center after Chen Luo established himself there 512.
• The Kirin Domain is a dangerous autonomous area associated with fugitives and an underground black market 565.
• Mount Wei Hu, formerly a key Tiger Clan stronghold, became the Star-Lit Mansion after the Southern Wilderness War 894 906.

Society and power

Demon society is strongly shaped by bloodline and cultivation. Many races are divided into bloodline lineages and family-based tribes, with status determined chiefly by inherited bloodline and personal strength 496.

• A Third Rank Great Sage can claim territory and establish a small demon kingdom; First Rank Great Sages are considerably rarer because of bloodline limits 504.
• Innate supernatural powers originate from abilities engraved into bloodline inheritance by powerful ancestors. Weak inheritance can cause these powers to degrade into lesser Bloodline Demonic Arts 548.
• Southern Wilderness politics follows a practical “strength is respected” principle. When a major power falls, its former allies are generally not pursued unless a blood feud exists 509.
• The region contains innumerable smaller clans beneath a handful of major powers, making unified rule difficult 618.

Major powers

• Tiger Clan — A long-dominant power whose territory later expanded across nearly two-thirds of the Southern Wilderness during Feng Bugui’s campaign 887.
• Wolf Clan — Historically among the most hostile factions toward humans; it promoted “de-humanization,” persecuted Human Race scholars, and later allied with the Tiger Clan after its bloodline resurgence 512 881.
• Qingqiu, Yu Yuan, Jun Ji, and Davali — Major demon regions that formed the Mount Fangcun Alliance against the Tiger Clan 881 887.
• Five-Colored Immortal Domain — Peacock Clan territory in the west, traditionally powerful yet relatively detached from other demon affairs 573.
• Elephant Clan — Once a top-five demon power whose vast western territory and settlement of Jusaluo were destroyed 573 587.
• Wutong Forest — Territory associated with the Azure Dragon Emperor and a major center of influence during the Bloodline Tide 618 713.

Bloodlines and Heavenly Dao

The Demon Race’s traditional path depends on tracing and strengthening ancestral bloodlines. Reaching higher realms requires locating a resonant ancestral blood shadow, while the rarest successes can allow a demon to Return to Ancestor and become an Ancestor Demon 481.

The Southern Wilderness Bloodline Tide created a major opportunity for advancement. During the Tide, Peak Great Sages attempted to enter the Ancestor Demon Realm, lesser demons underwent rapid transformations, and human scholars also sought the Tide’s Destiny 658 667.

Chen Luo’s writings introduced a second path: Heavenly Dao Demon Race bloodlines. These bloodlines are not constrained by the traditional bloodline quotas that limit ordinary demon races, making them a destabilizing and highly coveted alternative to inherited ancestry 703.

• The Mountain Suppressing Black Bear was among the first clear proofs that Journey to the West could create new Heavenly Dao Demon Races beyond its principal characters 702 703.
• The Boar Clan’s support for Great Xuan followed the emergence of a Heavenly Dao bloodline within its race 711.
• After the Southern Wilderness War, the Star Demon System’s removal of bloodline quota restrictions contributed to a period of demon prosperity 895.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Mount Fangcun’s rise — Chen Luo entered the Southern Wilderness through Zhennan Pass and established Mount Fangcun at Jingze Lake. The arrival of clans such as the Koma, Wolf, Qingqiu, Yu Yuan, and Snake Demons marked Mount Fangcun’s recognition as a regional power 452 512.
• Elephant Clan calamity — The Elephant Clan’s homeland was devastated amid a Netherworld Ghost Calamity, eliminating one of the region’s traditional great powers and leaving a major political vacuum 574.
• Bloodline Tide — Lang Feixian’s killing of Peacock Ancestor Demon Kong Susu opened the Tide’s struggle for advancement, drawing Ancestor Demons, Great Sages, Human Race scholars, and later new Heavenly Dao bloodlines into conflict 659 667.
• Tidal Renewal Era — After Chen Luo’s identity as Bai Mo was exposed, many demons began pursuing closer ties with the Human Race through Elegant Script, human institutions, and widespread intermarriage efforts 676 678.
• Tiger–Wolf expansion — Feng Bugui’s Tiger Clan rapidly conquered Peng and Peacock territories, while the resurgent Wolf Clan joined it. Their combined campaign endangered human residents and forced rival demon factions into open resistance 880 881.
• Southern Wilderness War — Qingqiu, Yu Yuan, Jun Ji, and Davali formed the Mount Fangcun Alliance against the Tiger Clan. Chen Luo’s return enabled the alliance to defeat Feng Bugui and restore Feng Nanzhi’s authority 881 885 894.
• Great Xuan settlement — Following the war, the major demon races accepted Chen Luo as Saint Martial King and Great Governor of Annan. The region entered a period of reconstruction, competition for newly vacant territories, and expanded Human Race influence 894 895.
