Background / History
Before joining Qing Wu, Golbat had led a Zubat colony in a cave. Intruders overwhelmed and captured it, after which it was released starving from a Poké Ball and eventually tamed by Qing Wu. The experience remained a source of resolve during its later training. 76
As Qing Wu's early aerial specialist, Golbat was trained extensively for speed, ranged Flying-type attacks, and harsh-environment endurance. Its Tailwind enhancement became effectively passive, producing the faint white aura that supports its exceptional flight speed. 41
On Dragon Island, it absorbed blood from a high-level Elite Four Dragonite and later received wind-riding instruction from Leader Dragonite. Earth Core Stone Milk subsequently reinforced its wings enough that Qing Wu believed even an Aggron's heavy impact would no longer seriously harm it. 78 97
Golbat delayed its final evolution despite having maximum friendship with Qing Wu, as Qing Wu hoped to improve its potential before the evolutionary transition. It finally evolved into Crobat during its battle against Alip's Infernape. 151 245
Appearance
Golbat was described as several times larger than an ordinary Golbat. After evolving, it became an unusually large Crobat—roughly twice normal size—with altered coloration and four powerful wings. 37 247
- Its body changed from blue to purple upon becoming Crobat. 247
- It has two pairs of wings and a smaller mouth resembling Zubat's. 247
- Its reinforced wings allow long-distance flight with little fatigue. 247
- It can fly through complicated terrain almost silently. 247
Personality
Golbat is intensely persistent and does not accept defeat easily. While trying to pass Dragon Island's water spout, it continued flying despite numb, aching wings; it later repeatedly challenged the Sky Pillar's Haxorus after being beaten back. 76 172
It is loyal and responsive to Qing Wu's commands, serving as the team's senior aerial battler during training. It also displays confidence and enthusiasm when confronting strong opponents, including Vespiquen and its elite Beedrill guards. 129 151
Its aggression can become excessive. After draining Fatty during the Trial Island confrontation, Qing Wu explicitly ordered it not to repeat the act. 38
Abilities & Skills
Flight, Tailwind, and Wind Manipulation
Golbat's defining strength is high-speed aerial movement supported by Tailwind and compressed Flying-type energy.
- Tailwind functions as a passive enhancement, greatly increasing its takeoff and flight speed. 41
- Its wind armor, also called the Armor of the Phoenix, protected it from heavy rain and weakened incoming Sludge Bombs. 58 100
- It can create Hurricane powerful enough to lift Tricolor Piranha, lake water, and even destabilize a speeding Sharpedo; the storm became a Water Spout. 60
- Its Whirlwind can clear paths through hostile flying corpses and create wind blades to strike large groups of Beedrill. 35 129
- Compressed Air Slash and Wind Blades are powerful enough to blast open stone walls and cut opponents at range. 80 209
- It is uncomfortable in dense electrical environments, and Qing Wu replaced it with Mightyena during the Power Plant's lightning-filled interior. 145
High-Speed Combat
Golbat combines its speed with abrupt directional changes and close-range strikes.
- Aerial Ace lets it evade attacks at the last moment and reposition behind an opponent, as it did against Sharpedo. 60
- Quick Attack and Bite allowed it to interrupt Lian Ji's Drowzee before it completed Stun Spore. 69
- It initially struggled to condense Flying-type energy for Wing Attack, but later used the move decisively against Arbok. 36 42
- Repeated sparring against Sky Pillar's Haxorus improved its evasion; it learned to trigger Aerial Ace when struck and eventually crossed the guardian's boundary. 172
Poison-Type Mastery
Golbat's Poison-type techniques became significantly stronger after evolution and further developed through the Toxic Orb.
- Its Poison Fang injected enough venom into Sharpedo to visibly slow it and induce poisoning. 60
- The Toxic Orb both generated poison and absorbed external poison, healing Golbat after Vespiquen's Cross Poison. 130
- Its advanced Poison Spray can dissolve rock into a poisonous swamp; Golbat can then reabsorb the poison for reuse. 151
- Poison-based attacks are ineffective against Kuraki due to his Poison Person physiology. 42
Sonic, Dark-Type, and Disruption Techniques
Golbat carries several utility moves beyond direct Flying- and Poison-type offense.
- Supersonic can cancel opposing sound waves, drive Tricolor Piranha into a mutual-slaughter frenzy, and disrupt Baltoy's movement. 60 139
- It can launch multiple Shadow Balls in succession from its wings. 61
- Black Gaze locks an opponent in battle until that Pokémon is defeated. 123
- Double Team creates multiple aerial clones that can overwhelm an opponent's visual tracking. 248
Flame Sparrow / Flame Bird
Golbat's advanced Brave Bird form compresses Flying-type energy into armor and ignites through supersonic friction.
- Qing Wu named the technique Flame Sparrow; its wind armor regulates extreme temperatures while the outer layer burns like a phoenix. 151
- It can split boulders cleanly enough to leave mirror-smooth, heat-scorched surfaces. 151
- Its earlier Brave Bird required roughly ten seconds to form air armor, leaving it vulnerable in a life-or-death battle. 100
- As Crobat, it later developed new ultimate moves, including Air Feather and Storm Cage, which defeated Roxanne's Volcarona. 312 313
Equipment / Enhancements
- Toxic Orb — Temporarily carried by Golbat to deepen its poison mastery, absorb toxins, and sustain poison-based attacks. 130 151
- Elite Four Dragonite blood — Absorbed on Dragon Island; expected to provide a significant increase in strength after digestion. 78
- Earth Core Stone Milk — Reinforced its wing bones and membranes. 97
- Evolution-boosting potion — Prepared by Qing Wu and consumed during its final evolution into Crobat. 245
Relationships
- Qing Wu — Trainer and primary partner. Qing Wu trained Golbat from its Zubat stage, relied on it for transport and combat, and supported its eventual evolution. 26 76 245
- Leader Dragonite — Mentor and benefactor on Dragon Island; taught Golbat wind-riding techniques and provided Earth Core Stone Milk through Qing Wu. 97
- Haxorus of Sky Pillar — A powerful training adversary whose repeated interceptions sharpened Golbat's speed, evasion, and battle experience. 172
- Alip's Infernape — Its final fire attack forced Golbat to use its full power and directly triggered its evolution into Crobat. 245
Story Role / Major Arcs
Team Rocket Trials
Golbat served as Qing Wu's principal aerial attacker during the Trial Base period. It battled Sharpedo in a cave, using speed, Aerial Ace, Poison Fang, and wind control to create an opening for Qing Wu's capture strategy. 60
During the trials, it overwhelmed ground-bound opponents such as Arbok through mobility and repeated Air Slash attacks. It also helped Qing Wu escape Ghost Mountain by shredding possessed flying corpses with Wind Blades and Whirlwind. 42 35
Dragon Island
Golbat carried Qing Wu through Dragon Island's water spout, awakening Brave Bird during the ascent. It later trained under Leader Dragonite, acquired wind-riding techniques, and underwent physical enhancement through Earth Core Stone Milk. 76 97
Nurturing House and Hunter Guild Conflicts
Golbat killed Fatty Kazami and pursued the fleeing Old Biao, returning with Old Biao's drained body and captured Fearow. 124
Against the Hunter Guild's Beedrill swarm, it paired with Ditto transformed into Exploud: Hyper Voice brought Beedrill down, while Golbat's Whirlwind and Wind Blades struck the falling swarm. 129
Evolution and Crobat Era
Golbat confronted Alip's Infernape with Twister and Flame Bird, ultimately splitting Infernape's strongest attack and evolving into Crobat mid-battle. 245
As Crobat, it defeated Volcarona using its newly developed Storm Cage, securing Qing Wu the Mauville Gym Badge. 313
