Background / History

Yuanshi is Tongtian's senior brother and the master of the Heavenly Origin Sect. He initially sees Tongtian's abolition of his Sage position as an opportunity to eliminate the Intercepting Sect, joining Taishang in pressuring Golden Ao Island. He openly envies the Intercepting Sect's standing as the foremost sect while resenting Tongtian's defiance 7.

At Golden Ao Island, Yuanshi sends Guangchengzi and Grand Supreme Elder Lord to provoke the Intercepting Sect while waiting nearby to strike. Tongtian severely injures the two disciples, prompting Yuanshi to intervene under the pretext of protecting them. His Pangu Banner fails to overcome Tongtian's Four Immortal Slaying Swords, God-Slaying Spear, and the island's Mountain Protection Formation; Yuanshi ultimately retreats to preserve his disciples and reputation 13 14.

The humiliation intensifies his hostility toward Tongtian. After Jieyin and Zhunti mock his defeat, Yuanshi directs Randeng to create conflict involving the Western Teachings. When Jieyin moves to execute Randeng, Yuanshi saves his vice leader and proceeds to battle both Western Saints, forcing them into submission 15 16 17.

Yuanshi subsequently builds alliances against Tongtian. He secures the Western Teachings' support, seeks Taishang's cooperation, and gains Nuwa's indirect assistance. He regards Shen Gongbao as the destined responder to the Investiture of the Gods, accepts him as a direct disciple, and grants him a cultivation technique and magical artifact—favoritism that alienates Shen Gongbao from his fellow disciples 43 44.

Personality

Yuanshi is fiercely prideful and exceptionally concerned with face. Public defeats by Tongtian repeatedly provoke him into rage, yet he withdraws when he judges a direct clash unwinnable 13 14 51.

He is calculating, persistent, and willing to use disciples, mortal rulers, demons, and allied sects as pieces in a larger struggle against Tongtian. When plans fail, he quickly seeks another route rather than abandoning his objective 46 47 54.

His treatment of disciples is pragmatic and often harsh. He initially favors Shen Gongbao because he believes him to be crucial to the Investiture of the Gods, but becomes cold and contemptuous once Jiang Ziya is revealed as the true destined figure. Later, Yuanshi punishes Guangchengzi by stripping his Senior Disciple authority and ordering a hundred years of wall-facing 113 169.

Conflict over Golden Ao Island

Yuanshi attempts to exploit Tongtian's apparent loss of Sage status, pressures Golden Ao Island with Taishang, and later attacks under the excuse of avenging his injured disciples. Tongtian repels him, leaving Yuanshi publicly humiliated 7 13 14.

War with the Western Teachings

After being provoked by Jieyin and Zhunti, Yuanshi uses Randeng to ignite conflict around the Western Teachings. He intervenes against Jieyin, pursues the Western Saints to Spirit Mountain, and forces them to concede 15 16 17.

Investiture of the Gods Schemes

Yuanshi recruits Shen Gongbao, gathers Saints into an anti-Tongtian alliance, supports Xi Qi, and attempts to undermine Great Shang through rebellion, bewitchment, and summoned demons. Tongtian and the Intercepting Sect repeatedly dismantle these schemes 44 46 47 54 96.

Defeats by Tongtian

Yuanshi's direct confrontations with Tongtian become increasingly one-sided. Tongtian destroys his Evil Corpse, breaks the Heaven-Slaying Auspicious Cloud, overwhelms him in Saint-level combat, and kills him for the first time during the Chaoge conflict 51 70 71 84.

Yuanshi revives, recovers through Hongjun's gifts, and resumes his campaign against Tongtian. He is killed again, defeated a third time after a failed sneak attack, and eventually has his Primordial Violet Qi extracted following another defeat 89 96 127 156.

Later Decline

Following further failures, Yuanshi becomes resentful of Hongjun's treatment and sends Shen Gongbao on a dangerous mission, causing the disciple to defect. He later demonstrates a measure of self-correction by disciplining Guangchengzi, but remains disheartened as the Human Sect surpasses the Heavenly Origin Sect in influence 163 169 222.
