Background / History

Lingzhuzi and reincarnation

In his previous life, Nezha was Lingzhuzi, a disciple of Saint Nuwa. He reincarnated as Li Jing's third son after a three-year gestation; Li Jing initially considered him a monster and disliked him. Grand Supreme Elder Lord later accepted him as a personal disciple. 409

Conflict with Shi Ji and first death

Nezha secretly entered Li Jing's treasure room and fired the Sky-Shaking Arrow, killing Biyun, a disciple of Niangniang Shi Ji. At Skull Mountain, he bound Caiyun with the Chaos Tunic and killed him with the Universe Ring, provoking Shi Ji into pursuing him. 104

Lord of the Beginning had manipulated the incident to draw Nezha and Shi Ji to Wa Huang Heaven and create discord involving Nuwa and the Intercepting Sect. Nezha revealed that he was Lingzhuzi's reincarnation in an attempt to secure Nuwa's protection. 107 109

After Shi Ji returned his artifacts, Nezha immediately attempted to kill her. Shi Ji countered with the Weak Water Pearl; an attack intended to restrain him instead severed his head. His true spirit departed for the Investiture of the Gods. 107

Reconstructed body and Human Sect service

Nezha later reconstructed his true body and attained sainthood through his physical body. By this period, he and Li Jing jointly managed the Human Sect's affairs. 231

Appearance

Nezha is routinely identified as the Third Prince and addressed as male, but his true form is described as a stunning young maiden. He can change form, though he cannot maintain an alternate appearance indefinitely. 417

  • Has a youthful appearance that leads others to mistake him for a child rather than an adult man. 460
  • Can manifest three heads and six arms through his Heavenly Law Manifestation. 410
  • During his later transformation, his body became a ten-mile-wide blood-red sphere of light. 538

Personality

Nezha began as reckless, defiant, and violent. His impulsive use of Li Jing's treasures caused the deaths of Shi Ji's disciples, while his refusal to heed Shi Ji's attempts at restraint led directly to his own first death. 104 107

He harbors resentment toward both Li Jing and the Intercepting Sect, and initially lacked any sense of belonging to his identity as Lingzhuzi. His strength and the Heavenly Court's tolerance of his temper made him overconfident during his confrontation with Sun Wukong. 410 412

Despite his conflict with Li Jing, Nezha cares for his father, mother, and brothers. He takes his Heavenly Court duties seriously, wishes to lessen Li Jing's burden, and is willing to confront karmic danger rather than abandon responsibility. 428 432

His time with Sect Master Tongtian makes him more reflective. He recognizes that a commander must understand and value subordinates, though he admits that his poor memory and face-blindness limit him. 439

Abilities & Skills

Saint Body and physical combat

Nezha attained sainthood through his physical body rather than through an orthodox Dao lineage. His physical cultivation gave him combat strength above Li Jing's and considerable standing in the Heavenly Court. 412

  • Subdued a Blood Flood Dragon that had devoured North Sea fishermen. 427
  • Can continue fighting after taking serious injuries, including injuries inflicted by Sun Wukong. 410
  • His power is not absolute: Sun Wukong broke his Heavenly Law Manifestation, extinguished his Fire-Tipped Spear, and struck him badly enough to make him vomit blood. 410

Three Heads and Six Arms

Nezha can assume a three-headed, six-armed Heavenly Law Manifestation and wield multiple treasures simultaneously. 410

  • Deploys the Fire-Tipped Spear, Chaos Tunic, and other Magic Treasures at once. 410
  • The manifestation can be forcibly dispelled by a sufficiently powerful strike. 410

Binding Divine Ability

Nezha can immobilize targets with a Binding Divine Ability. 433

  • Restrained everyone inside a village house while investigating the Blood Flood Dragon's karma. 433
  • Was vulnerable to the abnormal influence surrounding the women in that house until Tongtian intervened. 433

Rebirth through the light sphere

During an unexplained change in temperament, Nezha attacked Tongtian and was struck until his body exploded into a blood-red sphere of light. 538

  • The sphere contained a powerful gestating life force. 538
  • Tongtian created a matching sphere to absorb and neutralize the threat; the two spheres later fused, resulting in Nezha's rebirth. 538 539
  • This transformation required Tongtian's intervention and was not presented as a power Nezha could consciously control. 538

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Universe Bow and Sky-Shaking Arrow — Treasures taken from Li Jing's forbidden room; Nezha used them to kill Biyun from Chentang Pass. 104
  • Universe Ring — Used to kill Caiyun, attack Shi Ji, and strike at Sun Wukong; it can carry Samadhi True Fire. 104 410
  • Chaos Tunic — Used to bind Caiyun and as a defensive artifact in combat. 104 106
  • Fire-Tipped Spear — Primary weapon used alongside his Heavenly Law Manifestation. 410

Relationships

  • Li Jing — Father. Their relationship is tense due to Nezha's resentment, but Li Jing remains concerned for Nezha's safety and Nezha still cares for his family. 410 428
  • Madam Yin — Mother; Nezha includes her among the family members he wants to protect from karmic danger. 428
  • Grand Supreme Elder Lord — Former master and protector. He treated Nezha as a prized disciple and was enraged by Shi Ji's role in Nezha's first death. 105 109
  • Saint Nuwa — Lingzhuzi's former master. Nezha invoked their connection at Wa Huang Palace, though Nuwa recognized the surrounding scheme and did not directly save him. 106 107
  • Niangniang Shi Ji — Enemy responsible for Nezha's first death after he killed her disciples. 104 107
  • Sect Master Tongtian / Great Sage Sun — Guide, protector, and father figure. Tongtian helps Nezha address the Blood Flood Dragon's karma, teaches him through repeated journeys, and is later accepted by Nezha as “Father.” 427 432 539
  • Sun Wukong — Initial adversary. Nezha attacked him at Flower-Fruit Mountain but was defeated; after benefiting from the Purple Qi Coming East Pill, Nezha developed greater respect for him. 410 418
  • Marshal Tian Peng — Companion and frequent conversational partner; the two discuss Nezha's duties, marriage, and the Blood Flood Dragon. 427 428
  • Bai Liansheng — Dao Companion and later wife. Their union links Nezha to the White Lotus Sect, and they are expecting a son, Li Bai. 440 477

Story Role / Major Arcs

Heavenly Court conflict

Driven by resentment and suspicion, Nezha attacked Sun Wukong with the Universe Ring and later helped bring him before the Heavenly Court. The battle revealed that Sun Wukong's hidden strength far exceeded Nezha's expectations. 410 412 416

Nezha's attitude softened after he tested Tongtian's Purple Qi Coming East Pill and immediately broke through to the Saint Venerable realm. 418

Blood Flood Dragon karma

After capturing a rare Blood Flood Dragon, Nezha discovered hidden runes connected to a Sin Spirit. He feared that the creature's future sins could be counted against him and accepted Tongtian's assistance in resolving the karma. 427 428

He accompanied Tongtian through the Human Realm, the Unknowable Land, and hidden Small Worlds while they sought the origins and victims connected to the Blood Flood Dragon's transgressions. 432 443 457

Dao Companion and family

Bai Liansheng openly expressed interest in Nezha after performing the Heavenly Demon Dance. Nezha accepted her as his Dao Companion, emphasizing that he would take responsibility rather than avoid the relationship. 439 440

Their relationship later developed into marriage. During a later visit to Tongtian, Nezha revealed that Bai Liansheng was pregnant and asked Tongtian to name their son; Tongtian chose Li Bai, courtesy name Taibai. 477

Transformation and rebirth

Nezha later appeared profoundly changed and attacked Tongtian with unfamiliar aggression. Tongtian destroyed his body into a sphere of blood-red light, then prevented the gestating life form inside from becoming a catastrophe. 538

The fusion of Tongtian's sphere with Nezha's resulted in Nezha's rebirth. He accepted Tongtian's continued protection and acknowledged him as a father figure. 539
