Background and History

Shang Emperor and Intercepting Sect Disciple

Di Xin became Emperor of the Shang Dynasty at sixteen. Grand Tutor Wen Zhong eliminated all opposition to his succession and raised him under his protection. 44

Tongtian chose Di Xin as a counterweight to Yuanshi's support for Xi Qi, intending to bind the Intercepting Sect's fate to that of Shang. Wudang Holy Mother recruited Di Xin in a dream; he accepted immediately after being shown magical treasures. Wudang then taught him cultivation methods and granted him a protective artifact. 44 45

After joining the sect, Di Xin diligently cultivated while governing Shang. He resolved domestic strife, eliminated outside threats, and oversaw a period of increasing prosperity. 46

Schemes Against Shang

When Di Xin worshipped at Nuwa Temple after Wen Zhong departed to suppress a vassal rebellion, Yuanshi, Jieyin, and Zhunti attempted to bewitch him through Nuwa's statue. He used Intercepting Sect techniques to regain clarity, while Wudang's artifact shielded him from their renewed influence. 46

Yuanshi later used the Monster Summoning Banner to bring the Jade Pipa Spirit, Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, and Nine-Headed Pheasant Spirit toward Di Xin's court. The Nine-Tailed Fox possessed Daji and temporarily enthralled Di Xin, causing him to neglect state affairs. 47 Daji framed his sons Yin Hong and Yin Jiao after they sought revenge for their mother's death, but Intercepting Sect disciples escorted the princes safely back to Chaoge. Di Xin forgave them and learned of the Heavenly Origin Sect's plotting. 49 53

Conflict with the Saints and the Human Sect

Di Xin sought to execute Ji Chang for treason after receiving Wudang's warning that Xi Qi would eventually attack Shang. 56 Taishang and Yuanshi repeatedly intervened, demanding Ji Chang's release and threatening Chaoge. Di Xin refused to treat Shang's internal affairs as subject to Saintly command, even while Yuanshi's pressure nearly forced him to kneel. Tongtian intervened on his disciple's behalf. 75 76

Tongtian later returned the Kongtong Seal to Di Xin, declaring him the rightful Human Emperor and granting him the authority to decide the Human Sect's fate. 80 Di Xin used the seal and reclaimed destiny power from the Human Sect, publicly condemning Taishang for exploiting human destiny while failing to protect humanity. 80 81 He destroyed Taishang's statue and ordered the destruction of all Human Sect temples and statues, ending its influence among humans. 83

From Shang Emperor to Human Dao Ruler

Tongtian instructed Di Xin not to limit himself to the throne of Great Shang, but to regard himself as ruler of the entire human race and future master of the Human Dao. 149 Di Xin requested canonical texts to establish a lasting Dao lineage rooted in the Human Emperor's authority rather than the Intercepting Sect's name. Tongtian granted the texts and released Di Xin from the sect's formal constraints so he could build his own lineage. 149

Under Di Xin and Prime Minister Jiang Ziya, Shang expanded to territory one hundred times greater than Great Zhou's and maintained firm rule with Intercepting Sect support. 153 Over thirty years, Di Xin's policies expanded Shang's population fivefold; the public's later prayers for him were portrayed as arising from genuine reverence for the peace and material security of his reign. 170

Di Xin was poisoned during the Mount Tai Fengshan Ceremony, jeopardizing his ascent. Jiang Ziya turned the crisis into a public appeal, spreading news of the attack and rallying the human race's prayers and resentment against Hongjun. 165 166 The ceremony ultimately succeeded under Tongtian's supervision: Di Xin became a Saint, established the Human Dao, and consolidated it through his union with a Nine-Clawed Divine Dragon. 172

Personality

Di Xin is proud of his authority as Human Emperor and unwilling to submit Shang's governance to Saintly interference. He resisted Taishang's demand to release Ji Chang and endured Yuanshi's coercion rather than kneel. 75 76

He is decisive and punitive toward threats to human sovereignty, as shown by his abolition of the Human Sect and destruction of Taishang's temples. 80 83 At the same time, his rule earned broad popular devotion through policies that brought peace, food, clothing, and stability to Shang's people. 170

His ambition expands beyond dynasty-building. After Tongtian's guidance, Di Xin accepts responsibility for the whole Human Dao and seeks to establish enduring teachings rather than rely solely on the Shang throne. 149
