Background

Tongtian is the youngest of the Three Pure Ones. While traveling across Buzhou Mountain with Taishang Laojun and Yuanshi in search of treasures, he separated from his brothers and was selected as a Player by Shen Lang's Myriad Worlds Simulator. At the time, he was pursuing what he believed to be an Innate Spiritual Treasure. 13

He entered the God's Tomb World with the talents Sword Come, Sea King, and Youth Till Death. His first incarnation was a human corpse buried in the Gods and Demons Cemetery; the body contained his spiritual light alongside residual Soul Power, spiritual consciousness, and formation power. 15 24

Unable to rely on Primordial World cultivation methods, Tongtian devised the Sword Soul Primordial Spirit technique. He eventually seized the body, escaped the graveyard's formation, and survived the simulation's minimum duration, but died after 1,000 years and two days. His reward was the Youth Till Death talent rather than the Innate Supreme Treasure he expected. 16 17 19

Appearance

In the Primordial World, Tongtian is a slender young Daoist dressed in green robes. 13 During his God's Tomb World simulations, he also appeared as a powerful old man and later traveled with his sword carried on his back. 36 96

Personality

Tongtian is highly analytical under pressure. Trapped in an unfamiliar corpse and faced with incompatible world laws, he studied his surroundings, created a new cultivation method, and waited until the competing powers weakened before moving against them. 15 16

He is proud, combative, and extremely possessive of spiritual treasures. He disregards warnings against treasure-hunting, treats seized artifacts as his property, and will immediately engage when told that valuable treasures are involved. 20 37 42 His devotion to his sword is especially intense; upon returning from a simulation, he was more distressed by the temporary loss of the Tongtian Sword than by the loss of the supposed Innate Supreme Treasure. 46

Though often reckless, Tongtian is not incapable of retreat. When the Tomb Guardian Elder overwhelmingly outmatched him, he self-destructed a Sword Soul and fled rather than die pointlessly. 26 His experience in the God's Tomb World ultimately gave him a firm belief that a sentient Heavenly Dao becomes an “Evil Heaven” and must be opposed for the sake of all beings. 105 160

Sword Soul Primordial Spirit

Tongtian's self-created Primordial Spirit method condenses his soul into swords rather than a conventional Dao Body. It was initially designed to let him seize control of a corpse and survive a powerful sealing formation. 16

Story Role / Major Arcs

First God's Tomb Simulation

Tongtian reincarnated into a corpse in the Gods and Demons Cemetery and developed Sword Soul to overcome the body's residual powers and the formation imprisoning it. He broke free after a thousand years, but his escape reduced him from True Immortal to Earth Immortal. 16 17 He later died at the end of the simulation and began searching obsessively for the Simulator after receiving Youth Till Death instead of the supreme treasure he expected. 19

Second God's Tomb Simulation

On his second attempt, Tongtian condensed Sword Soul Dual Primordial Spirits, broke the formation in only fifteen years, and confronted the Tomb Guardian Elder. Forced to flee, he rebuilt his strength, collected local treasures, and advanced to Golden Immortal after forging the Tongtian Sword. 25 26 44

His attempt to pursue the remnants of Azure Heaven and the Chaos King led him into Space-Time Turbulence, prematurely ending the simulation. 45

War Against Heaven

After escaping the turbulence in a later simulation, Tongtian allied with Dugu Baitian's faction to destroy Heaven. He seized the Ten Directions Absolute Domain, killed Azure Heaven and the Chaos King, and then used nine Sword Souls to erase the Heavenly Dao's Black Eye. 101 102 103 105 106

The hidden challenge rewarded him with the Heart of Sword Dao Rules. The experience changed his purpose: he resolved that, should the Primordial World's Heavenly Dao become evil, he would carve out hope for all beings with his sword. 106

Conflict with Hongjun and Founding of the Intercepting Sect

Hongjun's Incarnation attacked Tongtian to seize the Heart of Sword Dao Rules. Although heavily injured, Tongtian killed the Incarnation with the assistance of Taishang Laojun and Yuanshi, then escaped into Chaos. 120 121 122

Tongtian later returned as a Primal Grand Unity Golden Immortal and immediately attempted to slay the Evil Heavenly Dao. After being repelled, he investigated Hongjun's influence, removed hidden gray power from Primordial Violet Qi, and founded the Intercepting Sect on Kunlun Mountain. 158 160 161

Myriad Worlds Activities

Tongtian revisited the restored God's Tomb Continent, left behind the inheritance of the Jie Tian Sect, and warned its newly born Heavenly Dao that he would destroy it if it turned evil. He chose not to disturb Dugu Baitian, the Demon Lord, and other reincarnated survivors. 199

He later worked with Nuwa, Houtu, and other Players to identify simulator users, investigate Wutian, manage the Myriad Worlds Alliance, and prepare the Primordial World for future threats. 213 214 220
