Background / History
Sun Lei entered the City Guard as a rookie and was the only person to pass its assessment that year. He had been in the Guard for only a week when he joined Luo Wei and Huo Lian on a sewer mission involving Flame Marsh Lizards. Luo Wei regarded him as someone following in his father’s footsteps and placed high hopes on him. 17
He hoped to join a Sect and become a Qi Cultivator, even expressing a desire to see the border Realm Gates. Three years before the later sewer operation, he received a City Guard recommendation to take a Sect examination, but failed. The setback left him withdrawn for a time before it ultimately strengthened his resolve to improve. 20 31
Within three years of that failed examination, Sun Lei rose to become a City Guard captain. He formerly served under Luo Wei alongside Huo Lian, retaining deep respect for both seniors after his promotion. 31
Personality
Sun Lei initially lacks combat experience and can become visibly nervous under pressure, but he is self-critical rather than complacent. After struggling against a Bronze Rank Flame Marsh Lizard, he is dissatisfied with his own performance and resolves to improve. 18
He is ambitious and intensely driven by the desire to become stronger. His failed Sect examination initially discouraged him, yet eventually became a source of motivation; subsequent losses repeatedly deepen this determination. 20 31 47 57
As a captain, Sun Lei is protective of his subordinates. He shields the support-class Zhao Xiaoqin from a Goblin ambush and considers protecting support personnel a captain’s natural responsibility. 34
He is also compassionate toward fallen guards. While navigating the sewers, he closes a dead City Guard member’s eyes, retrieves the man’s identification tag, and apologizes before taking the damaged sword from the body. He later gathers Luo Wei and Huo Lian’s remains and preserves their dog tags and Luo Wei’s photograph. 40 42
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Sun Lei is a dedicated swordsman whose combat ability centers on a longsword and direct, forceful attacks.
- Uses Sword Strike for powerful close-range slashes. 18 41
- Uses Battle Qi Slash to project Battle Qi through his sword. 18 47
- Can chain consecutive Sword Strikes to cut through large groups of Goblins while under Moss’s enhancement. 46
- His sword qi develops enough to intercept incoming attacks with a sustained “downpour” of sword energy. 67
- During the Realm Gate assault, he bisects a Gold-grade Ogre and clears hundreds of meters of monsters with a single Battle Qi Slash. 68
Tactical Combat
Despite his earlier inexperience, Sun Lei becomes an observant and adaptable fighter.
- Identifies the danger of advancing through dark, widened sewer passages without knowing the monsters present. 33
- Uses terrain to prevent encirclement, choosing a rock wall to restrict the directions from which Goblins can attack him. 41
- Deflects a Goblin Cavalry lance, exploits the opening in its armor, and immediately transitions to the next target during a fighting retreat. 35
- Coordinates with Li Mengzhang by targeting black-robed enemies while Li Mengzhang handles their skeleton soldiers. 69
Moss’s Augmentation
Moss can channel Mana-enhanced talents into Sun Lei, temporarily raising his combat power far beyond his normal rank.
- Receives enhancements to speed, senses, stamina, strength, Mana, and Mana release. 45
- While empowered, slaughters hundreds of Goblins and displays combat power comparable to Gold-grade. 46
- The enhancement is temporary and ends after its Mana is depleted. 48
- Moss later gives his sword Flame Entanglement, wrapping it in high-pressure flames and effectively turning it into a flaming magic weapon. 71
- His augmented strength is considered capable of reaching Diamond-grade combat power despite his actual Gold-grade status. 64

Realm Gate Disaster and Alliance with Moss
Now a City Guard captain, Sun Lei returns to the sewers during a Realm Gate crisis. After being badly injured and separated from his team, he is healed by Moss. Sun Lei and Moss navigate the sewers together. He retrieves a weapon from a dead guard, follows Moss’s guidance, and fights through Goblins. When they find Luo Wei and Huo Lian dead, Sun Lei collects their belongings and commits himself to avenging them. 40 41 42
Ogre Battle
Moss enhances Sun Lei’s physical abilities, allowing him to cut through hundreds of Goblins and rejoin the City Guard. Driven by grief and revenge, he kills a Gold Rank Ogre with a single sword strike, then assists Lei Yuanyun against another Ogre. 45 46 47
After the battle, Sun Lei recognizes that the strength Moss lent him arrived too late to save Luo Wei, Huo Lian, Li Wen, and the guards who stayed behind. Moss later leaves the City Guard camp, though Sun Lei hopes they will meet again. 48 49
Undead Assault
During a later operation, Sun Lei fights Skeleton Warriors and Zombies whose regeneration overwhelms his team. When his comrades are devoured, he breaks through to Gold-grade in grief and rage, blaming himself for being too late once again. Moss returns and persuades him to fight beside her. 57
With Moss’s support, Sun Lei unleashes a massive sword qi and flame attack that bisects and incinerates the undead horde. Although he helps repel the assault, he remains emotionally hollow after the losses. 59

He fights alongside Li Mengzhang against a massive monster horde, otherworldly humans in black robes, and a Bone Dragon. Even after suffering severe leg injuries, Sun Lei forces himself upright to continue the mission, focused solely on destroying the Realm Gate. 67 68 69 70 78
