Background / History

Zhou Qingqing was born on Mount Buzhou as a twenty-four-petal Creation Azure Lotus rather than being divided among the Three Pure Ones. Supreme Pure Laozi named her surname “Zhou” by removing the “not” from Buzhou, while Jade Pure Yuanshi chose “Qing” from her azure-lotus true form. She entered the Three Pure Ones’ lineage as their first disciple. 10 24

She is a transmigrator whose original name was also Zhou Qingqing. Her knowledge of the original Primordial World includes the Azure Lotus's division into the Three Pure Ones' Dao-proving treasures, future calamities, and the eventual discord between their lineages. The Three Pure Ones overhear this foreknowledge in her thoughts and begin treating her kindly both out of affection and to learn more about their possible futures. 1 6 8 10 46

Tongtian completed her bestowed name by reduplicating Yuanshi's “Qing” into the feminine “Qingqing.” Before her transformation, the Three Pure Ones jointly enlightened her, opening her Sea of Spiritual Consciousness and allowing her to turn divine sense into audible speech. They then bestowed the Supreme Pure Golden Elixir Scripture, Jade Pure Golden Casket Artifact Refining Record, and Upper Pure Mysterious Array Diagram to develop her Golden Core, body, and meridians respectively. 9 10

Her value became public during the conflict over the Innate Gourd Vine. At Yuanshi’s instruction, Qingqing circulated the Jade Pure Golden Casket Artifact Refining Record, transformed into her lotus form, and—with Yuanshi’s mana—blocked Eastern Emperor Taiyi’s Chaos Bell. 24

After taking human form, Qingqing remained much smaller than she expected and initially resented her chibi appearance. She ultimately accepted it, choosing to gather more Chaos Green Lotus components and cultivate instead of dwelling on her height. 121

As her cultivation increased, Qingqing became the senior figure responsible for a growing Daoist cohort. She sparred with her junior brothers and sisters to force cooperation, organized their ascent to the Thirty-Three Heavens, and frequently arranged opportunities, karmic positions, and training for disciples across the Three Teachings. 158 326 448

Her efforts to maintain unity were deliberate: after growing attached to all three masters, she sought to improve relations among their disciples before the future division into Chan and Jie lineages could create hostility. During the Investiture of the Gods Calamity, the Three Pure Ones publicly appointed Qingqing as the holder of the Heaven Book and God-Sealing Host. Following Tang Sanzang's clearing of a simulated Chaos landscape, her masters summoned her to the Three Pure Ones Hall. They explained that the Gold and Silver Youths had reproduced only Chaos's outward form, then joined her as the Four Pure Ones to reveal true Primordial Chaos. Her initial desire to remain safe and “lie low” coexists with pronounced curiosity and restlessness. She tries to avoid dangerous sermons and calamities, yet enjoys treasure-hunting, watching major events, testing powerful weapons, and displaying her accomplishments.
