Background

Daoist Jieyin was once a sixth-layer Primordial Chaos Heavenly Dao Saint. After his Saint position was cut down, he returned to the quasi-Saint level and had to reconstruct his former divine abilities. During this period, he used the Welcoming Seal—also called Amitabha Buddha’s Seal—to attempt to contact Dao Ancestor Hongjun. 545

He returned to the Primordial Chaos Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal realm before publicly founding Buddhism. Upon experiencing the Buddha Path again, he rejected his former cultivation designation in favor of identifying himself as Amitabha Buddha. 662

He later proclaimed his complete separation from the Mystic Gate, transformed the Western Sect into Buddhism, and established the Buddha Path as an independent teaching alongside neither Heaven, Earth, nor Human Dao. Taking the name Amitabha Buddha, he declared his old vow to establish the Western Pure Land and ferry boundless beings. 715

His initial attempt to end the Investiture of the Gods Calamity involved converting its calamity qi into the Past Glorious Calamity to gain solemn merit. Supreme Pure Laozi disrupted the plan, exposing that Amitabha had not yet reached the Dao Integration Realm at that time. 715 717

In the earliest Chaos era, Amitabha was the Nirvana Demon God. He advanced through Nirvana to establish the Buddha Path, elevating a Great Dao that had not originally ranked particularly highly among the Three Thousand Great Daos. 971 992 1015

He has survived an unknown number of Primordial World reincarnations and struggled against the Immeasurable Calamity. Fragments of those cycles remain in his Dream World, supplying memories, cultivation systems, and powers unavailable to most beings of the current world. His accumulated foundations also helped make Buddhism’s prosperity part of the greater trend across successive reincarnations. 984 1017 1019 1031

Amitabha and Zhunti spent an extended period confined in the Heaven-Suppressing Coffin. Escaping consumed considerable energy, although Amitabha’s position as the Buddha Path’s master reduced the harm he suffered compared with Zhunti. After their release, he entrusted the initial recruitment and spread of Buddhist teachings to his junior brother while recovering his cultivation. 856

Personality

Amitabha is patient, calculating, and exceptionally long-sighted. He routinely accepts temporary losses when they preserve the Buddha Path’s future, whether yielding to Zhou Qingqing, allowing Queen Mother of the West to borrow Buddha Path power, or abandoning the western lands as a source of disciples. 862 867

His greatest personal priority is Buddha Mother Zhunti. He repeatedly expends Buddha Path origin, compromises with enemies, and develops new cultivation plans to rescue or elevate his junior brother. 728 730 895 1057

He can be proud and provocative when acting from a position of strength, notably challenging the other two members of the Three Pure Ones to join his confrontation with Upper Pure Master Tongtian. Defeats do not end his plans; he adapts, changes resurrection locations, retrieves memories, and develops new methods. 1020 1018 1023

His concern for Buddhism’s future can outweigh loyalty to individual followers or inherited traditions. To prevent Cihang’s attainment from disrupting the calamity, he relinquished Buddhism’s entire Guanyin lineage and its Buddha fruits, accepting that this would dishearten original Buddhist disciples while leaving the followers received from other mythologies largely unaffected. 1146

Repeated setbacks make him increasingly suspicious of apparent opportunities. After earlier deceptions, he refused to trust the Preaching Squad’s outward display of collapsed Dao Hearts and recognized it as an obvious trap. He also studies opponents’ methods and revises later trials in response, rather than relying exclusively on the original Journey to the West sequence. 1244 1293 1383

Abilities & Skills

Buddha Path Sovereignty

As the Buddha Path’s master, Amitabha can draw on its origin, manifest golden Swastika Symbols, receive Buddhist beings, and direct the path’s faith and merit.

  • The Welcoming Seal combines the Fearlessness Seal and Wish-Granting Seal; it guides sentient beings to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss and was used to seek Dao Ancestor Hongjun. 545
  • He used the Buddha Path’s origin to stabilize Buddhism’s foundation and create the Twenty-Eight Heavens. 862 863
  • His receiving ability brought Shakra, Great Brahma, and beings of the Vedic Age into the Buddha Division. 879 880
  • Expenditure of Buddha Path origin can be permanent, including when he shielded Zhunti or restored Zhunti and Bodhidharma through Nirvana. 728 895
  • He can sense the Buddha Path being invoked by others, including Zhunti and Queen Mother of the West. 861
  • His exhaustion-of-outflows power carries the intent of liberation. He attempted to sever Zhunti within the Vacuum Homeland and then revive him through the Buddha Path, disguising a rescue as punishment. 861 862
  • The Five Buddhas Heart Mantra guarded the Buddhist divisions, although Zhou Qingqing bypassed it using the Five Primordials, Five Virtues, and Five Fortunes while concealing her aura. 879
  • His true body’s Dao Creation pressure could induce an urge to worship him. Tongtian’s pressure protected cultivators who had lent their swords from this influence. 1014
  • He can relinquish Buddhist fruition and lineage teachings to another path, as demonstrated when he transferred Guanyin’s associated Buddha fruits and Salvation Vow Power to Cihang. 1146

Dream World and Nirvana

Amitabha is the master of the Dream World and can reflect external worlds into it, manipulate its contents, and use the Buddha Path to return from destruction.

  • He began reflecting the Primordial World and myriad worlds into his Dream World to strengthen his influence over the calamity. 916
  • His Nirvana Buddha Path concealed karmic changes in the Land of Ultimate Bliss and aided Zhunti’s restoration and comprehension of Causal Law Manipulation. 895
  • After Tongtian destroyed both him and the Heart Pure Land, Amitabha revived through the Buddha Path, though he returned without the Pure Land. 1016
  • Tongtian’s Great Freedom Heavenly Demon Sword later erased Amitabha’s memories of their battle, proving that his resurrection does not prevent lasting losses. 1023
  • Dream Enlightenment is identified as his strongest and most fundamental divine ability, with the reflection of the myriad worlds expanding its application and helping restore his Dao Creation cultivation. 916 947
  • The Dream World preserves an immense collection of memory fragments from countless Primordial World reincarnations. Amitabha can seal these memories and selectively retrieve them through Jieyin; observers suspected that reclaiming them all might trigger the Immeasurable Calamity. 972 1018 1031
  • He used the Dream World to restore Zhunti’s access to the Karma Demon God’s memories and support his rise to the Dao Integration Realm. 962 972 973
  • Within the Dream World, he can imagine himself in his strongest state and commune with the greater trend, seeking solutions beyond what he can accomplish directly in the ascended Primordial World. 1031
  • Nirvana can sever a journey of karma. He attempted to end Cihang’s interference in a Journey to the West sequence through this method, but the Taiji Diagram appeared as he acted. 1145
  • Revival consumes Buddha Path origin, while Tongtian’s later attacks also damaged Amitabha’s own origin. His persistence therefore does not make repeated deaths costless. 1016 1023

Pure Lands and Buddhist Seals

Amitabha’s seals can serve as offensive methods, defenses, and foundations for Buddhist realms.

  • The Lotus Great Hand Seal was used against Nuwa through the power of the mind. 996
  • Tongtian’s Annihilation Forever destroyed the lotuses within the seal and annihilated Amitabha’s hands, preventing him from reforming it. 1003
  • Amitabha abandoned lotus-related symbols in Buddhism, recreated his hands with Swastika Symbols, and transformed the remaining seal structure into the Heart Pure Land. 1004 1005
  • Nuwa severed his Finger of Nirvana, forcing him to employ the Jieyin Treasure Banner. 992
  • His Golden Bell Shield was condensed entirely from golden Swastika Symbols and appeared capable of passing through spacetime. Zhou Qingqing stopped it with one finger when he sent it to protect Zhunti. 729
  • The Heart Pure Land is a realm of the mind rather than an ordinary physical world, expressing the principle that the mind itself makes the Buddha and Pure Land. 1005
  • Myriad Buddhas Pay Homage to the Ancestor was deployed against Tongtian’s Myriad Swords Return to the Source. Amitabha also attempted to introduce faith-powered Buddhist swords into Tongtian’s Sword Dao torrent as a means of attacking it from within. 1009 1010
  • His Six-Character True Words suppressed Sun Wukong beneath the Five Directional Divine Mountains. Neither Wukong’s Shenni-empowered staff nor Violet Fairy’s Violet-Cyan Sword initially broke the seal. 1122 1123 1125

Twelve Light Buddhas

After retrieving memory fragments from the Dream World, Amitabha manifested the Twelve Light Buddhas: a system formed from accumulated faith, merit, and primal vows. 1019

  • The lights contain principles of time and space: the vertical represents time, while the horizontal represents space. 1019
  • Those who hear the Buddhas’ names, rejoice in faith, and dedicate their merit may be reborn within their land without regression. 1019
  • Rather than seeking to kill Tongtian, Amitabha intended the Twelve Lights to become a cage capable of restraining him. 1019
  • Tongtian’s “Circles Round and Round” sword ability ultimately shredded the Twelve Lights. 1022
  • The lights drew on past reincarnations and represented his true Pure Land cultivation system, rather than merely an isolated attack. Named manifestations included the Buddhas of Unobstructed Light, Peerless Light, Flaming Light, and Pure Light. 1019

Fate, Karma, and Reversed Swastika Symbols

Amitabha incorporates Fate and karmic methods into the Buddha Path.

  • The Myriad Buddhas Seal uses both forward and reversed Swastika Symbols; it shattered the Gate of Destiny and Destiny Spear, leaving Amitabha with Buddhism’s Destiny Insight. 972 973
  • He empowered Shakyamuni Tathagata with large and small wheels derived from the Wheel of Destiny and fragments of Primordial World Reincarnation. 984
  • He planted the Reverse Karmic Cultivation Method within Golden Cicada, attempting to restore him as a Buddha Path protagonist. 1061
  • Zhou Qingqing identified Amitabha’s fusion of Buddha and Demon Path methods as the Brahma-Saint Heavenly Demon Scripture. 1061
  • His historical pursuit of transcendence followed subtraction toward emptiness, reducing traces and karma associated with himself. He sought Fate’s assistance in erasing all traces of Fate and used power released during their battle to erase his own traces. 971 973
  • He secretly bestowed a reversed golden Swastika Symbol on Bodhidharma, granting the dual support of the Buddha Path and greater trend. 962
  • Destiny Insight can investigate beings’ origins and changes in their destined roles. It revealed that the Primordial Five Insects’ power had been consumed by the Blood-Winged Black Mosquito, prompting Amitabha to replace Nine-Headed Worm in his plans. 978 1080
  • With the greater trend’s support, he gathered true nature from Zhunti’s past, present, and future reincarnations to prepare a breakthrough through the Great Dao of Truth, a path intended to escape karmic chains. Zhou Qingqing ultimately took this power. 1057 1060

Trial Construction and Demon God Manipulation

Amitabha adapts the Journey to the West’s original ordeals to counter the Daoist Preaching Squad, drawing on the Dream World, previous reincarnations, and Chaos Demon Gods.

  • He can empower substitute participants, including granting Myriad Saints Princess a Heavenly Dragon bloodline. 1080
  • He assigned Shiva information, personnel, and broad authority to arrange trials, supplying resources from the Dream World. 1133
  • An illusory dreamscape concealed his altered Four Saints Test the Zen Mind, whose rules made one member’s hesitation or failure endanger the entire squad. Zhou Qingqing uncovered it with assistance from the Three Pure Ones. 1175
  • He used western fortune to send two White Tiger Star Lords to Blue Planet as obstacles. 1209
  • He devised Acala’s wrathful child form as a substitute for the nonexistent Red Boy. The resulting trial abandoned the expected Samadhi True Fire approach in favor of isolation and sealing that restricted spiritual treasures and encouraged cultivation of Buddhist teachings. 1308 1317
  • He summoned Apsu Primordial Blackwater from the Dream World to replace the Blackwater River, avoiding another confrontation between Ao Lie and the West Sea Dragon clan. 1325
  • He modeled the Three Pure Ones Sacred Statues on Heavenly King Yuanshi from a previous reincarnation. Current worship rites would activate them, while attacking the central statue could cause the three to merge into a more dangerous Heavenly King Yuanshi statue. 1331 1335
  • He fused several Chaos Demon Gods into the Immortal Lord of Myriad Laws, designing an opponent that grew stronger through combat. Its methods upgraded the Vajra Ring’s weapon-taking function and extended to copying Dao and restricting immortality. 1383 1396

His surveillance is not absolute. Obscured heavenly secrets prevented even his Dao Creation-level observation of the Preaching Squad during Lotus Cave’s Chaos Primordial landscape. 1278

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Jieyin Treasure Banner — Daoist Jieyin’s companion spiritual treasure, originally primarily defensive. After the Twelve-Petaled Merit Golden Lotus was reclaimed, it bore more of Buddhism’s fortune and incorporated both his Mystic Gate past and the later evolution of Buddhism. Amitabha deployed it after Nuwa countered his Finger of Nirvana, intending its power of ultimate bliss to draw in the Human Dao dragons if she used the Kongtong Seal. 992 993
  • Earth-Splitting Chisel — A Chaos supreme treasure sought by Amitabha through memories of another Primordial World; he later used it to conceal and shape trials directed at Sun Wukong. 1059 1123
  • Golden Swastika Symbols — Manifestations of Buddha Path source power used for protection, receiving, Nirvana, and seal techniques. 728 885 1004

The Earth-Splitting Chisel prompted new plans concerning the Earth Dao and Reincarnation. Amitabha initially concealed his possession of it rather than use it openly against Houtu; later, its concealment prevented even Houtu from determining what was happening inside Sun Wukong’s trial. 1061 1122 1123

Relationships

  • Buddha Mother Zhunti — His junior brother, deputy leader of Buddhism, and foremost concern. Amitabha repeatedly sacrifices Buddha Path origin and gathers true nature to support Zhunti’s cultivation. 730 895 1057
  • Zhou Qingqing — A recurring adversary and negotiator. Amitabha yielded to her terms in the western lands, but she repeatedly exposes and disrupts his Dream World schemes. 862 879 1061
  • Upper Pure Master Tongtian — His principal Dao Creation-level rival. Tongtian destroyed the Lotus Great Hand Seal, ended the Heart Pure Land, repeatedly killed Amitabha during resurrection, and ultimately erased his battle memories. 1003 1016 1018 1023
  • Nuwa — A Dao Lord opponent who severed Amitabha’s Finger of Nirvana and countered him with the Nuwa Sacred Sword. 992
  • Bodhidharma — A Buddha Path protagonist created from Zhunti’s bloodline after Golden Cicada and Sun Wukong became unusable for Amitabha’s plans. 894 962
  • Shakyamuni Tathagata — An entity Amitabha created from Bodhidharma’s remnants in the Dream World and empowered with fate and reincarnation insights. 984
  • Past Buddha Burning Lamp, Medicine Master, and Maitreya — Buddhist followers who recognize Amitabha’s authority and place their hopes in his resurgence. 1014 1019
  • Supreme Pure Laozi — The Daoist leader whose knowledge of Buddhism’s foundations makes Amitabha particularly cautious. Laozi blocked his early Buddha Path methods and later personally intervened to prevent him from monopolizing the replacement Lotus Cave trial. 717 884 1000 1269
  • Dao Ancestor Hongjun — A figure Amitabha sought for assistance through both the Welcoming Seal and Buddha Path. When Amitabha appealed after Laozi defeated his methods, Hongjun awakened the Corpse Liberation Immortal rather than return personally. 545 717
  • Fate Demon God — A historical opponent who challenged Amitabha’s pursuit of emptiness. Their confrontation supplied Amitabha with Destiny Insight and insights into the Wheel of Destiny. 971 973 984
  • Shiva — An entrusted organizer of later Buddhist trials, given Dream World resources, personnel, and authority to act independently. Amitabha continued to value his experience after the defeat of his Yoga God incarnation. 1133 1151 1160 1175
  • Houtu — An Earth Dao opponent who reacted to his interference with Reincarnation. Amitabha’s concealed Earth-Splitting Chisel posed a threat to her path and later bypassed her oversight of Sun Wukong’s trial. 1061 1067 1122 1123
  • Cihang Universal Salvation Heavenly Venerate — A Daoist whose interference displaced Guanyin’s role in Amitabha’s plans. He eventually relinquished the Guanyin lineage and Buddha fruits to her to protect the ongoing calamity from the convergence of her timelines. 1143 1145 1146
  • Immortal Lord of Myriad Laws — A fused Chaos Demon God opponent created by Amitabha to replace the straightforward weapon-seizing mechanics of the Green Ox and Vajra Ring ordeal. 1383 1396

Story Role / Major Arcs

Founding Buddhism

Amitabha returns as Daoist Jieyin’s new identity, establishes the Buddha Path, transforms the Western Sect into Buddhism, and attempts to redirect the Investiture of the Gods Calamity into the Past Glorious Calamity. 715

Laozi defeats his golden Swastika methods and blocks successive Buddha Path abilities, forcing his borrowed aura to fall. Amitabha then appeals to Hongjun, whose intervention takes the form of awakening the Corpse Liberation Immortal to rescue Zhunti. 717

Rebuilding the Buddha Path

After negotiating with Zhou Qingqing for Zhunti’s release, Amitabha helps establish the Twenty-Eight Heavens as Buddhism’s new foundation. He focuses on receiving Buddhist beings into the Buddha Division while Qingqing absorbs several divisions with the Vajra Gourd. 862 879 881

Following his emergence from the Heaven-Suppressing Coffin, he abandons a direct struggle over the western lands and allows Queen Mother of the West to borrow Buddha Path power in exchange for Zhunti’s return. He then relies on received followers and the anticipated prosperity of Buddhism rather than immediate territorial recruitment. 856 862 881

Journey to the West Schemes

When Golden Cicada and Sun Wukong become unreliable, Amitabha orders Zhunti to create the Mahayana Sutra and produce Bodhidharma as a new protagonist. He later reflects myriad worlds into the Dream World and creates Shakyamuni Tathagata from Bodhidharma’s remnants. 894 916 984

He identifies Journey to the West as the necessary vehicle for Buddhism’s rise, trusting that destiny, fortune, and the greater trend still favor the Buddha Path despite Daoist interference. Reflecting the myriad worlds also brings him close to recovering the Dao Creation Realm. 884 947

To sustain Bodhidharma, he grants a reversed Swastika Symbol and helps Zhunti regain the Karma Demon God’s memories and Dao Integration cultivation. After Bodhidharma’s defeat, he reshapes the failed protagonist into the world-saving Shakyamuni Tathagata. 962 972 973 984

Conflict with the Three Pure Ones

Amitabha battles Nuwa and Upper Pure Master Tongtian after reaching the Dao Creation Realm. Tongtian destroys the Lotus Great Hand Seal and Heart Pure Land, but Amitabha retaliates with the Twelve Light Buddhas and Arrow Across the Western Heaven before ultimately losing the confrontation. 992 1003 1019 1020 1023

Initially, Amitabha conceals his restored realm and attempts to suppress Nuwa without exposing Dao Creation power. Tongtian’s intervention forces the hidden strength of the Lotus Great Hand Seal into the open, and the struggle eventually draws Amitabha’s true body out of the Land of Ultimate Bliss. 991 1000 1014

After losing battle memories and suffering damage to his origin, he withdraws from further direct confrontation. Zhunti’s renewed confidence helps restore his resolve, and Amitabha searches the Dream World’s memory fragments before communing with the greater trend for a way forward. 1023 1029 1031

Later Calamity Manipulation

Amitabha seeks to restore Buddhism’s destined protagonists by gathering true nature for Zhunti, awakening Golden Cicada’s demonic potential, and using the Earth-Splitting Chisel to shape hidden trials for Sun Wukong. His efforts are repeatedly undermined by Daoist protagonists and Zhou Qingqing’s interventions. 1057 1061 1069 1123

He replaces missing or compromised participants in the original trajectory. After discovering the loss of the Primordial Five Insects, he employs Myriad Saints Princess and Myriad Saints Dragon King against Ao Lie. Their setbacks lead him to question the protagonists’ apparent freedom and search for exploitable weaknesses, although further surprises continue to undermine his control. 1080 1096 1103 1106

During Sun Wukong’s confinement, Amitabha watches for evidence of a system supplied by Zhou Qingqing. He instead discovers Wukong’s Shenni-derived power and sees Burning Lamp’s radiance transformed into Violet Fairy, whose arrival gives the monkey renewed hope. He also orders Ksitigarbha to return the Tang Emperor to the human world before his planned Underworld soul journey proceeds. 1123 1125

At the Water-Land Dharma Assembly, he delegates arrangements to Shiva but faces Cihang’s interference with Guanyin’s role and the Three Hoops. He ultimately gives up Buddhism’s Guanyin lineage to contain the consequences of Cihang becoming a Heavenly Venerate. Shiva’s Yoga God incarnation is defeated, and the Golden Hoop Immortal removes the hoops from Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujin. 1133 1143 1146 1151

Trials Against the Preaching Squad

As the Preaching Squad travels west, Amitabha increasingly replaces familiar ordeals with stronger, specialized challenges. His concealed Four Saints Test the Zen Mind threatens the whole team if one member fails, while the White Tiger Ridge trial uses Heavenly Court figures to complicate the squad’s response. He studies the travelers’ abilities through these encounters, although their system-assisted methods remain difficult to restrain completely. 1175 1209 1244

For the missing Lotus Cave and twin-horn attendants, he plans to empower Refined Ghost, Clever Bug, Bashan Tiger, and Sea-Leaning Dragon within an Esoteric Sacred Cave. Laozi intervenes, sending Gold and Silver and Daji to construct the hardship instead. Amitabha’s later observation of the ordeal is interrupted when heavenly secrets are obscured. 1269 1278

Subsequent substitutions include Acala for Red Boy, Apsu Primordial Blackwater for the Blackwater River, and deceptively arranged Three Pure Ones Sacred Statues in Chechi Kingdom. These trials draw on previous reincarnations and hidden mechanisms rather than merely increasing opponents’ strength. 1308 1317 1325 1331 1335

After observing the Heaven-Reaching River ordeal, Amitabha concludes that a trial’s greatest difficulty can lie in its incomprehensible rules. He creates the Immortal Lord of Myriad Laws from several Chaos Demon Gods, seeking a challenge that continually benefits from the squad’s attacks instead of ending once a single weapon-taking mechanism is defeated. The squad subsequently enters the mysterious Floating Library Pavilion, where apparent cultivation benefits conceal the new danger. 1380 1383 1396

Trivia

  • “Amitabha” is explained as meaning “immeasurable,” specifically associated with immeasurable light and immeasurable life. 545
  • Omitting “Namo” from his invocation signifies that he has abandoned “taking refuge” and is acting in earnest. 1005
  • Although the Buddha Path makes Amitabha difficult to permanently destroy, Tongtian’s End Great Dao was capable of killing him and forcing repeated resurrection. 1016 1018
  • Zhou Qingqing calls him the “best senior brother in the Primordial World” while observing his efforts to help Zhunti reach Dao Creation. 1057
  • After Guangchengzi attained Primordial Chaos through the Seal Dao, Amitabha had to share part of his faith power with him whenever he formed a seal. He subsequently concealed the Buddha Heart Seal’s aura again. 946 947
  • His historical experience does not provide perfect knowledge of the current reincarnation. He repeatedly acknowledges that the Three Pure Ones’ unity, conscious spiritual treasures, and the conversion of Buddhist protagonists into Daoist ones differ sharply from earlier cycles. 1029 1106
