Background
Demon Race Marshal
Bai Ze was one of the Ten Great Demon Marshals and the Demon Race's foremost sage of wisdom. During the Witch-Demon Calamity, he handled errands to Eastern Kunlun, including delivering Shore Flowers to Zhou Qingqing. When his actions contributed to the Witch Clan producing Earth Dao Saints, he stepped forward to accept responsibility rather than let Di Jun bear the consequences. 221
He also served as a reliable court informant. When Fuxi arrived at the Heavenly Court accompanied by Grand Pure Laozi, Bai Ze immediately reported the unexpected pairing to Di Jun, preventing an impulsive attack on Fuxi. 251
Bai Ze became a Demon Marshal during Di Jun and Taiyi's campaigns to establish the Demon Race. Among the Ten Great Demon Marshals, his cultivation and direct combat strength were the lowest, but his tactical use of divine arts allowed him to remain competitive in actual spell battles. His cultivation during the Witch-Demon Calamity reached the peak of Daluo Golden Immortal without advancing to Quasi-Sage. 378 379 430
Steward of Three Pure Ones Heaven
After the Demon Race's defeat, Di Jun and Taiyi left Bai Ze in the Primordial World to maintain contact with Zhou Qingqing and prevent the Heavenly Court from offending the Upper Three Heavens. Bai Ze understood that he was also an anchor for the Demon Emperors' eventual return. 326
Bai Ze sought a place under Zhou Qingqing rather than formally joining the Heavenly Court. She appointed him steward of Three Pure Ones Heaven, assigning him to receive Daoism disciples, establish rewards and punishments, and manage its affairs. 327
Although he maintained an intelligence channel to Di Jun for a time, he acted openly under Zhou Qingqing's orders. Di Jun later declared Bai Ze's mission complete, freeing him to serve Zhou Qingqing wholeheartedly. 386 505
His duties also included accompanying Zhou Qingqing as a guide, locating divine beasts and other cultivators, and relaying assignments to allied powers. He summoned the Six-Eared Macaque for appointment as Heavenly Official Emperor, conveyed surveillance requests to Primal Phoenix, and delivered Zhou Qingqing's instructions for Lu Ya to temper the Zhou Dynasty's cultivators without killing them. 378 430 446 562 685
After becoming the Wisdom Sage, Bai Ze retained his steward's position. Zhou Qingqing brought him to Kongtong to hear the Three Pure Ones expound the Dao, then instructed him to cultivate in seclusion, receive disciples with whom he had a destined connection, and establish a Dao lineage on Blue Planet if he wished. 753 762
When Zhou Qingqing took Sun Wukong to the Ferocious Beast Calamity, she entrusted Blue Planet's affairs to Bai Ze and sent him to inform her masters. He accepted the administrative responsibility rather than accompany her into an unfamiliar and dangerous past calamity. 823 824
He continued handling practical affairs at Miro Palace during the later calamity. When Zhen Yuanzi brought Ginseng Fruit to thank Zhou Qingqing, Bai Ze received him in her absence; Jade Pure Primordial Heavenly Venerate instructed him to distribute the fruit among the disciples and reserve thirty-six for the Heavenly Venerates and Zhou Qingqing. 1134
Chronicler and Administrator
Zhou Qingqing recognized that stewardship alone wasted Bai Ze's talents and tasked him with documenting the transformed Primordial World. He began recording divine beings, locations, scripts, and major events in the Bai Ze Diagram and Classic of Mountains and Seas. 344 346 384
His records include Di Hong obtaining the Xuanyuan Sword and the fused essence of Di Jun and Dijiang, Ghost Chariot's connection with Nine Phoenix, King Pan's dragon-hound true form, and the dreamlike transformations of beings linked to Zhou Qingqing. 387 676 819 1032
He also recorded the forging of the Nine Cauldrons, the expansion and stabilization of the Nine Nether Realm, Dijiang's attainment of Earth Dao sainthood, and the Six-Eared Macaque's appointment as Heavenly Official Emperor. His errands for the Three Great Officials earned him Heavenly Dao merit, which he considered unusually generous compared with his service in the ancient Heavenly Court. 398 446
Bai Ze later became responsible for Blue Planet's infrastructure and data collection. By incorporating the world's data into his two sacred records, he attained the Wisdom Sage path. 753
His involvement began with shaping the newly created world's geography. At Zhou Qingqing's direction, he manifested the imagery of the Classic of Mountains and Seas over Blue Planet and used it to evolve mountains and rivers from the wilderness. After his attainment of sainthood, Zhou Qingqing also asked him to help develop Blue Planet's Mythic Three Kingdoms era. 498 500 503 810
His later chronicles extended to conflicts involving Daoism's highest authorities. He recorded the Three Pure Ones striking Heavenly Dao Hongjun in Purple Cloud Palace and, on Jade Pure Primordial Heavenly Venerate's instructions, identified Supreme Pure Laozi's River of Fate as the cause of another destruction of the western Land of Ultimate Bliss. 844 960
Personality
Bai Ze is cautious, politically perceptive, and willing to shoulder responsibility. He understood the danger of his position between the Demon Race and Eastern Kunlun, yet accepted the consequences of his choices rather than expose Di Jun to blame. 221 326
His pursuit of wisdom is sincere and relentless. He treats correct understanding as a cultivator's greatest joy, eagerly studies unfamiliar phenomena, and seeks enlightenment even through setbacks or combat he cannot win. 388 516
He is also prone to overanalyzing Zhou Qingqing's casual remarks and trying to predict her plans. While this habit can lead him to mistaken interpretations, his reasoning sometimes reaches a correct conclusion through an incorrect process. It reflects his devotion to serving her and improving his Wisdom Great Dao; the Three Pure Ones eventually acknowledged that even his unconventional deductions could genuinely raise his cultivation. 481 482 485 647 768
His confidence increased under Zhou Qingqing's protection. He openly challenged Patriarch Bodhi despite knowing he could not defeat a Saint's corpse incarnation, using the confrontation as an opportunity for practical experience and insight. Nevertheless, he remained aware of his limits and declined to become a burden during Zhou Qingqing's journey to the Ferocious Beast Calamity. 516 823
Abilities & Skills
Wisdom Great Dao
Bai Ze cultivates the Great Dao of Wisdom as his primary path rather than merely treating wisdom as a supplementary attribute.
- His eyes emit the Light of Wisdom when he deduces information, analyzes divine abilities, or receives insight. 346 389
- He can identify and locate demons through their divine names, including the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, Nine-Headed Pheasant Spirit, Jade Pipa Spirit, Shen Gongbao, and the Dream-Eating Tapir. 430 482 928
- His analysis can identify the nature and origin of unfamiliar divine arts, including the Great Dao of War and ancient Dragon-Phoenix Calamity techniques. 389 698
- His deductions have limits: he could not see through Zhou Qingqing's thoughts, and some Saint-level techniques remained beyond his comprehension. 327 725
- His divine-name investigation can extend across the Primordial World. A year-long search identified Dragon-whiskered Tiger and Shen Gongbao among the cultivators heading toward Eastern Kunlun. 481 482
- With Zhou Qingqing's guidance, he detected traces of fate within Haotian and Yaochi's Three Harmonies and Four Transformations on Ziwei Star. 651
- Explaining Dao principles to others can increase his own wisdom, making instruction another means of advancing his cultivation. 694
- His attainment as the Wisdom Sage made him an incarnation of wisdom. Amitabha Buddha regarded this as Bai Ze claiming the strand of wisdom associated with the Buddha Path before Buddhism could secure it. 753
- Even after attaining sainthood, he could not clearly foresee Jiang Ziya and Shen Gongbao's futures and instead observed their development directly. 913
Wisdom Lotus
Bai Ze condenses a Wisdom Lotus within his Primordial Spirit as the focus of his cultivation and deductions.
- Zhou Qingqing guided him to manifest her lotus form rather than her human appearance, allowing him to complete his Primordial Origin Golden Immortal breakthrough. 429 430
- Under pressure from Patriarch Bodhi, the Wisdom Lotus enabled him to perceive that Bodhi's apparent Daoist art contained genuine Bodhi intent. 516
- He continued refining and improving the Wisdom Lotus after setbacks, regarding it as essential to keeping pace with other cultivators. 666
- Its condensation marked his choice of the Primordial Chaos cultivation path over Three Corpse Severance and deepened his understanding of the Heaven, Earth, and Human Daos simultaneously. 430
- His completed Sword of Wisdom later floated above the lotus, with the two forming the core of his wisdom within his Primordial Spirit. 1026
*Bai Ze Diagram* and *Classic of Mountains and Seas*
Bai Ze's paired sacred records serve as his principal tools for recording, analyzing, and applying knowledge.
- He documents the Primordial World's changed geography, divine beings, races, writing systems, and historical developments. 344 346 384
- When facing Patriarch Bodhi, he transformed both records into talismans and phantasmal light to stabilize his Primordial Spirit against Bodhi's pressure. 516
- Di Jun and Taiyi completed the ancient Heavenly Court's image within the Bai Ze Diagram, causing the laws of Bai Ze's Wisdom Great Dao to advance. 505
- On Blue Planet, the records converted Dao rhythm into data, which Bai Ze absorbed to attain the Wisdom Sage path. 753
- The Classic of Mountains and Seas can project its recorded imagery into a world and evolve physical geography; Bai Ze used it to shape Blue Planet's mountains and rivers. 498 500
- He recorded the Dream-Eating Tapir as soon as Zhou Qingqing engraved its divine name into the Great Dao, explicitly crediting her with its creation. 928
- He designated the period of his Sword of Wisdom's completion as the “Year One of Sword Dao” for inclusion in the Classic of Mountains and Seas. 1026
Divine Arts
- Restrained killing-intent manifestation — Bai Ze gathered spiritual energy into an image with a tiger's head and ram's horns, then feigned pressing down on the Huai River. By keeping its Dao rhythm and magical power restrained while revealing a trace of killing intent, he tested Wuzhiqi's sensitivity to danger and forced him into flight before pursuing and capturing him. The concealment of heavenly secrets during this investigation was attributed to Zhou Qingqing. 379
- Sword of Wisdom — An offensive divine art used to test Guangchengzi and Four Unlike on Zhou Qingqing's behalf. Bai Ze derived it from observing her varied combat techniques, condensing Wisdom Great Dao laws into a sword. It later fully formed within his Primordial Spirit, amplified his divine abilities, and allowed him to sense the joy and anger of immortals and gods who had regained their swords. 655 1026
- Heavenly Net, Earthly Snare — A trapping art created by Di Jun during the ancient Heavenly Court era; Bai Ze used it to surround Immortal Fu Yuan. Its strength scales with its user's power, although Fu Yuan's Twelve Flying Talismans broke through Bai Ze's application. 530
- Wheel of Wisdom of the Heavens — A supreme divine ability comprehended during seclusion, intended to support his future advancement toward the sacred path. It manifests as a gigantic wheel of wisdom-light carrying the aura of the heavens. Western Sect cultivators found it reminiscent of Buddha Path abilities, but apparently more powerful than the techniques they recognized. 729
Refinement and Dao Study
- Wisdom-heart refinement — Refined the Eight-Petaled Lotus Heart left to him by Zhou Qingqing, absorbing part of Amitabha Buddha's wisdom power and creating the Seven-Aperture Exquisite Heart. Nezha felt his own wisdom increase slightly merely from looking at the finished heart. 569 585
- Saint-assisted comprehension — While observing the Three Pure Ones' intervention in Shen Gongbao's calamity connection, Bai Ze received their assistance in understanding mysteries of the Dao of the Limitless that would ordinarily have exceeded his realm. 485 486
- Heart Monkey observation — Zhou Qingqing applied a mind-related divine ability to Bai Ze and Du'e True Person, causing Bai Ze to see a figure of himself within his Primordial Spirit as part of an opportunity to confront their Heart Monkeys. 692
Items
- Bai Ze Diagram — Sacred diagram of spirits and monsters; later incorporated the image of the ancient Heavenly Court. 505
- Classic of Mountains and Seas — Bai Ze's ongoing record of the Primordial World, its beings, and its changing myths. 344 819
- Seven-Orificed Exquisite Heart — Also called the Seven-Aperture Exquisite Heart. Refined by Bai Ze from a lotus heart before being entrusted to his disciple Bi Gan; its source was the Eight-Petaled Lotus Heart containing residual wisdom power from Amitabha Buddha. 569 585 625
- Zhou Qingqing's recipe book — Used to instruct Daji, Hu Ximei, and Jade Noblewoman in preparing snacks and spiritual tea as a gesture of goodwill. 440
Relationships
- Zhou Qingqing — His mistress and the master of Three Pure Ones Heaven. She appointed him steward, guides his cultivation, entrusts him with intelligence and recordkeeping, and repeatedly uses his wisdom in major plans. After his attainment of sainthood, she continued treating him as her steward while arranging further Dao instruction and opportunities to establish a lineage. 327 430 753 762
- Di Jun — Former Demon Emperor. Bai Ze remained in the Primordial World partly to relay intelligence to him, but Di Jun eventually released Bai Ze from that duty. 386 505
- Eastern Emperor Taiyi — Former ruler and fellow Demon Race leader. Bai Ze continued to respect him while prioritizing Zhou Qingqing's orders. 470 505
- The Three Pure Ones — Zhou Qingqing's masters recognize Bai Ze's value as her steward and occasionally send him to record events beyond ordinary cultivators' reach. They also assisted his comprehension during Shen Gongbao's calamity-related transformation and later entrusted him with preserving the truth of their actions in his chronicles. 364 486 819 960
- Cangjie — Collaborator in creating a creation myth through the torrent of words; Bai Ze contributed his records and understanding while Cangjie evolved the writing. He also collected the Dragon Inscription, Phoenix Register, and Demon Script for the stele that drew Cangjie to the Luo River. 384 507
- Bi Gan — Bai Ze's disciple. Bai Ze accepted the steadfast Human Race member and passed on Dao methods alongside the Seven-Orificed Exquisite Heart. When warned that Bi Gan could be drawn into the Investiture of the Gods, Bai Ze chose to let him remain in the mortal world and sought Kong Xuan's protection rather than withdraw him from Blue Planet. 625 672
- Queen Mother of the West — Exchanged intelligence with Bai Ze after returning from the Kunlun Mirror, allowing both to compare the changes that had occurred across multiple calamities. 810
- Houtu — Bai Ze respectfully acknowledged her achievements despite the former conflict between the Witch and Demon Races. She praised him after learning that he had become Zhou Qingqing's steward and offered him a future position in the Underworld. 359
- Primal Phoenix — Bai Ze conveyed Zhou Qingqing's request for Kong Xuan and Golden Roc to monitor powerful opponents during the calamity, then accompanied Primal Phoenix to Miro Palace to request the Karmic Fire Red Lotus method. 562
- Kong Xuan — An ally Bai Ze approached to help safeguard Bi Gan. Kong Xuan subsequently rescued Bi Gan when Zhunti attempted to seize his heart. 672
- Duobao — A former temporary sparring partner among the Seven Little Ones. Duobao later defeated Bai Ze by combining spirit treasures with an Azure Lotus to simulate the Dao rhythm of a postnatal supreme treasure, exposing a gap in Bai Ze's combat strategies. 665
- Lu Ya — Bai Ze relayed Zhou Qingqing's combat instructions to him and analyzed his Buddhist corpse incarnations. Lu Ya addressed Bai Ze as “uncle.” 685 687
- Daji, Hu Ximei, and Jade Noblewoman — The three demon sisters respected Bai Ze's surviving prestige as a former Demon Marshal. He explained Zhou Qingqing and Nuwa's arrangements to reassure them after their appointment as Heavenly Court matchmakers. 440
