Background
Kurapika is the last known survivor of the Kurta Clan, whose members were massacred for their Scarlet Eyes. The eyes manifest under extreme anger and were sold as collectors’ items after the killings. He refuses to hide his Kurta clothing, believing the victims should not have to conceal themselves while the Phantom Troupe remains in the shadows. 84 107 380
His initial objective is revenge against the Phantom Troupe, but he broadens it into recovering every stolen Scarlet Eye and eventually resurrecting his clansmen. This hope leads him to accept Jing Yang’s offer to join Akatsuki and learn Nen. 85 87 109
Appearance
Kurapika is a blond-haired youth whose eyes turn fiery scarlet when intense anger overwhelms him. He commonly uses black contact lenses to conceal this identifying trait. 84 162
- Wears the clothing of the Kurta Clan rather than concealing his heritage. 107
- His hair turns white after using Resurrection on Pyro at great cost. 394
- Natural Aura training can briefly alter his facial structure and make his hair longer and more disheveled. 414
Personality
Kurapika is composed, observant, and exceptionally proactive in learning Nen. He quickly infers the existence of techniques such as In from Gyo, studies other Nen users’ battles closely, and avoids prying into allies’ abilities without cause. 93 94 103
The Kurta massacre remains a profound emotional trigger. Mentions of the Phantom Troupe, Scarlet Eyes, or his clan can provoke Scarlet Eyes activation, aggression, and reckless overexertion. Despite this, he does not inherently enjoy killing; after killing Lieh Ying, he feels exhaustion rather than satisfaction. 176 190 287
His desire to restore his people consistently outweighs concern for his own life. He accepts lethal vows, burns his lifespan through Absolute Time, and sacrifices additional lifespan to revive Pyro. 95 394
Abilities & Skills
Scarlet Eyes
When enraged, Kurapika’s eyes become scarlet and his Nen type changes from Conjuration to Specialization.
- His aura quantity rises with the intensity of his emotional state. 121 177
- Scarlet Eyes grant access to Absolute Time and allow the six book abilities to reach their full potential. 95
- Excessive use causes severe physical and mental strain; he has fainted from eye overuse. 190 288
Absolute Time
A Specialist ability activated in Scarlet Eyes state.
- Enables 100% efficiency in all six standard Nen systems. 95 121
- Powers Kurapika’s books at their fullest capability. 95
- Consumes one hour of Kurapika’s lifespan per second of activation. 95
- Prolonged use leaves him exhausted and physically weakened. 190
Dolphin Bookshelf
Kurapika conjures a dolphin-shaped bookshelf containing six numbered books, each associated with a distinct Nen ability. 95 109
- Redemption — first volume; incorporates effects from other Nen categories, though its specific function is not documented. 95
- Hellfire — second volume; incorporates effects from other Nen categories, though its specific function is not documented. 95
- Abyss — third volume; stores bodies in an abyss-like world, including defeated Spiders. 190
- Apocalypse — fourth volume; divination, lie detection, and remote tracking based on adequate target information. 109 129
- Judgment — fifth volume; used to kill Lieh Ying; Kurapika intended its first written name to be his own. 95 190
- Resurrection — sixth volume; preserves Scarlet Eyes and restores deceased Kurta Clan members. 95 380 394
Apocalypse
The fourth book is Kurapika’s principal tracking and investigative ability.
- Locates Scarlet Eye holders and other targets when supported by sufficient information. 109
- Can detect lies and conduct remote divination in Scarlet Eyes state. 129
- Tracked the Fourth Prince across Kakin and later identified a Chimera Ant’s approach. 365 414
- May require a physical medium such as a target’s blood for certain tracking attempts. 129
- Fails to provide reliable results when information is insufficient or the target is not a real living being. 109 129
Skull Knight
A Transmutation ability that shapes Kurapika’s aura into skeletal hands and a giant skeletal knight-like construct. 98 134
- Extends skeletal hands for striking, blocking, and intercepting attacks. 98 182 186
- Can expand its reach and alter the hand’s shape for wider or more precise attacks. 98 186
- Manifested as a giant combat aura during confrontations with Mashu Harrison and other opponents. 134 195
- Its appearance intensifies alongside Kurapika’s Scarlet Eyes and anger. 134 380
Resurrection
The sixth book restores deceased Kurta Clan members using their recovered Scarlet Eyes.
- Only works on Scarlet Eyes and their original owners. 95
- Using it on anyone other than a clansman causes Kurapika to die from cardiac arrest. 95
- Requires reaching the Dark Continent and obtaining Everlasting Rice / Nitoromi for safe use. 95 393
- Directly deducts the resurrected person’s lifespan from Kurapika’s own when used without that safeguard. 394
- Successfully resurrected Pyro and forcibly opened Pyro’s aura nodes in the process. 394 414
Natural Aura
Kurapika later masters the Natural Type, allowing him to enhance his use of every other Nen category.
- At his Excellent Natural Type level, he can maintain roughly 1,600 aura of Natural Aura. 414
- Raises his practical cultivation in the six major Nen types to virtual Peak tier. 414
- Can form a Nen Doll from separated Natural Aura. 414

Story Role / Major Arcs
Heaven’s Arena and Akatsuki recruitment
Kurapika follows a lead about the Phantom Troupe to Heaven’s Arena, where Jing Yang offers intelligence and assistance in exchange for joining Akatsuki. He accepts after learning of the organization’s Dark Continent ambitions and the possibility that Nen could restore the dead. 84 85 87
Jing Yang opens Kurapika’s aura nodes and trains him in Nen. Kurapika rapidly builds his fundamentals, devises the Dolphin Bookshelf, and develops Scarlet Eyes Specialization, Absolute Time, and the Skull Knight. 88 90 94 98
Scarlet Eyes recovery
After learning the Phantom Troupe discarded his clan’s eyes, Kurapika separates eye retrieval from immediate revenge. He uses Apocalypse to identify owners, infiltrates the Mt. Seireitou Art Exhibition through a civilian Hunter mission, and subdues Mashu Harrison. 109 113 115 134
He later recovers one pair of Scarlet Eyes but disappears after confronting a cult Patriarch whose Nen ability uses sacrificed followers for power. Kurapika eventually survives surgery to remove the lingering threat left by the Patriarch’s ability. 162 171
Spider conflicts
Kurapika battles members of the Phantom Troupe and kills Lieh Ying through Judgment. He places Bop’s body in Abyss, intending that his revived clansmen may one day witness the Spiders’ fate. 190
Although driven by vengeance, he struggles with the moral burden of becoming a killer. His resolve falters when he recognizes that revenge risks turning him toward the same violence he despises. 286 287
Kakin and the Fourth Prince
Working under Camilla’s cover, Kurapika targets Tserriednich after recognizing him as a powerful Scarlet Eyes collector. He uses Apocalypse to track the prince, studies Tserriednich’s ten-minute reversal ability, and plans to conceal the decisive strike until the reversal window has passed. 300 332 365 367 368
Kurapika attacks Tserriednich’s convoy and confirms Jing Yang’s eventual kill. He subsequently discovers the Prince’s Scarlet Eyes collection, including Pairo’s preserved head, and seals the recovered remains in Resurrection. 378 379 380
Pyro’s resurrection and mentorship
Having recovered all of his clan’s eyes and resolved much of his hatred, Kurapika resurrects Pyro. The cost drastically shortens Kurapika’s lifespan and turns his hair white. 393 394
He becomes Pyro’s Nen mentor while accepting work to eliminate Chimera Ant threats in Kakin. 414
Trivia
- Kurapika has never taken the Hunter Exam and lacks a Hunter License, which repeatedly complicates travel and professional work. 275
- He is described as having senses far sharper than those of ordinary people even without Nen training. 161
- He generally avoids revealing the full details of his Nen abilities, even during an examination where an examiner appeared to be probing for that information. 321
