Nature and Origin

A Zanpakuto begins as an Asauchi, a blank prototype created by Ōetsu Nimaiya. Its wielder nurtures the blade and instills it with their own soul, transforming it into a personal weapon rather than a mere forged object 13 282.

A Zanpakuto is a reflection of the Shinigami's concealed heart, soul, traits, and self-perception. Its spirit is formed from qualities extracted from its wielder, making self-understanding central to releasing its power 34 60.

A Zanpakuto's name is inseparable from its power. When Ichibei Hyōsube smeared out Sagara Dragon's name, Arima Shizuya's Bankai was sealed and even his Shikai remained only partially manifested 274. Hyōsube later used his authority over names to make Sagara Dragon disappear entirely 294.

Release Mechanics

Shikai

Shikai is the first stage of release and the first direct expression of a Shinigami's inner nature 47.

• Flashy, heavily transformed releases are commonly associated with wielders who openly express their emotions.
• Restrained releases that change little are associated with composed, cautious, and meticulous wielders.
• These patterns are not absolute; disguises and exceptional cases exist 47.
• A released ability is normally treated as private information, since revealing it exposes a wielder's trump card 145.

Bankai

Bankai is the ultimate release, allowing a far more complete use of a Zanpakuto's power 66.

• It demands extraordinary Spiritual Might and a complete connection with the Zanpakuto, whether through dialogue, mutual understanding, or forcing it into submission 66.
• A Bankai can cause severe environmental destruction; extended releases may collapse parts of the Seireitei, leading to restrictions on its use within the city 124.
• A Shinigami who has mastered Bankai may release Shikai without speaking its release command 123.

Simulated Release

Arima Shizuya developed Simulated Release as an unconventional workaround after Sagara Dragon's name was smeared black and its Bankai was sealed 120 274.

• It does not further release the Zanpakuto; it makes Sagara Dragon simulate another state instead.
• While using this state, the wielder temporarily loses access to Sagara Dragon itself.
• It has multiple forms, including Sagara Dragon · Sand Altar 126.
• It is described as an incomplete substitute rather than the weapon's true, complete power 126 128.

Documented Appearance

A Zanpakuto's appearance differs by wielder and release state. Arima Shizuya's initial released blade, later questioned as an incomplete expression of its true identity, had the following features 47 60:

• A long, slender blade with a faintly translucent quality.
• A form lighter, thinner, and sharper than its Asauchi state.
• A silver-white chain extending from the hilt.
• Tiny linked clasps and twisted engraved markings along the chain 47.

Zanpakuto Spirits

Zanpakuto spirits possess awareness, emotions, and a spiritual link to their wielders. The bond can be strained when a Shinigami rejects their own fears or inner nature, as occurred between Arima Shizuya and his spirit 64.

• Arima's spirit was distressed by his repeated deaths in simulated futures and had been protecting him throughout those experiences 64.
• Their reconciliation allowed Arima to learn Sagara Dragon's true name and confront the future alongside her 64.
• A sufficiently complete bond can allow a spirit to manifest tangibly and fight beside its wielder, as Sagara Dragon did against Ichibei Hyōsube 294.
• Even while separated from Arima, Sagara Dragon retained memories and a desire to reunite with him 356.
• Pushing a Zanpakuto beyond its inherent capacity can destroy it; Sagara Dragon risks shattering if forced to process too much spiritual power at once 385.

• The Academy's Sword House lends Asauchi to students; Arima Shizuya selected one that accepted him through intuition 13.
• Aizen considered Arima's release abnormal because he had achieved Shikai without ever meeting his Zanpakuto spirit 60.
• Ōetsu Nimaiya regards the Shinigami's nurturing of an Asauchi as essential, thanking Arima for caring for the blade that became Sagara Dragon 282.
