Background / History
Ichigo was born to Isshin Kurosaki, a former Soul Reaper, and Masaki Kurosaki, a Quincy. Arima Shizuya's detached half-soul and Hollow power were transferred through Masaki and ultimately became part of Ichigo's power. As a child grieving for his mother at a cemetery, Ichigo was comforted by the then-amnesiac inner Hollow. 216 217
While still a high school student, Ichigo encounters Kuchiki Rukia, learns of Hollows and Soul Reapers, and resolves to protect her after she is injured defending him. 219 His later attempt to rescue Rukia from Soul Society brings him into contact with Arima and the two presences within his inner world: the Quincy power represented by Yhwach and Arima's Hollow-derived power. 223 226
After Rukia's rescue, Hirako Shinji and the Visored reveal Ichigo's parentage and explain that his Hollow power originated from Arima. Ichigo initially fears and avoids that power, but eventually seeks the Visored's help to confront it. 251 252 253
Appearance
Ichigo is an orange-haired teenage boy whose appearance changes dramatically when he manifests Hollow power.
- Orange hair.
- Wields the black long blade Zangetsu in battle. 257
- During his first Hollowfication, his upper body is covered in a snow-white shell and his face is replaced by a red-and-white patterned mask. 231
- His later Hollowfication forms a dragon-shaped mask and an exoskeleton extending over his neck. 268
- After reforging, he carries two long Zanpakutō. 369
Personality
Ichigo is empathetic and protective. Before becoming a Soul Reaper, he offers to replace flowers for a ghost near his home; when Rukia is injured, he chooses to fight the Hollow targeting him rather than abandon her. 219
His strongest motivation is protecting others. He repeatedly acts to save Rukia, Orihime Inoue, and Uryū Ishida, though this initially leads him to take reckless risks alone. 226 260 268 Over time, he becomes calmer and more strategic, recognizing when cooperation is necessary and learning to use his Hollow power without rejecting it. 257 259 269
Ichigo is wary of easy answers about his origins. Even after learning that Arima is connected to Masaki's death and his own inner power, he chooses to focus on becoming strong enough to protect what matters to him. 254
Abilities & Skills
Soul Reaper Combat
Ichigo serves as Karakura Town's Substitute Soul Reaper and can leave his physical body using his Substitute Badge. 251 255
- Detects conspicuous spiritual presences and responds to Hollow incursions. 255
- Releases Zangetsu and employs Getsuga Tenshō. 223 257
- Uses Bankai in battle against Kuchiki Byakuya. 235
- Later wields two reforged Zanpakutō representing his unified powers. 369
Hollowfication
Arima's half-soul forms the Hollow-derived aspect of Ichigo's power. Its first manifestation is violent, difficult to control, and physically exhausting. 230 231
- Provides overwhelming physical strength, enough to send Kenpachi Zaraki flying and overpower him at close range. 231
- Grants high-speed regeneration, allowing severe wounds to rapidly close. 231
- Produces immense black Spiritual Pressure and a Hollow mask. 231
- Initially leaves Ichigo unconscious after the power dissipates. 231
- Becomes a consciously accepted and controlled form after his training with the Visored and Arima. 253 268
Hollow Flash
Ichigo's decisive Hollow attack.
- Fires a black-red beam capable of piercing through Kenpachi's chest and critically injuring him. 231
- Later defeats Grimmjow's Resurrección despite Grimmjow's increased power. 269
Refined Spiritual Pressure Control
After accepting his internal powers, Ichigo's attacks become more controlled and efficient.
- Uses a restrained Getsuga Tenshō that compresses power rather than detonating immediately. 269
- Demonstrates a calmer, more agile fighting style against Grimmjow. 257
- Is identified by the Quincy as a Special War Power due to his “latent ability.” 312
