First Appearance Chapter 1

Background / History

Aizen began as an instructor at the True Spiritual Arts Academy while holding the position of Fourth Seat in the Fifth Division. He introduced himself as responsible for students' mental health and learning, presenting a polite, self-effacing image despite being an accomplished academy graduate. His course was to last six years. 1

He quickly took an interest in Arima Shizuya after assessing his serious kendo practice. Aizen personally corrected Shizuya's technique and openly admitted that he had been using him as a template for teaching. 1 He had also known Yoruichi Shihōin and Kisuke Urahara for at least nineteen years by the time of their reunion. 8

Hirako Shinji later announced Aizen's promotion to Vice-Captain of the Fifth Division. 40 By then, Aizen had been pursuing a century-long rebellion against the existing order. His scheme encompassed Hollowification research, the eventual expulsion of the Visored, manipulation of the Gotei 13, and the pursuit of the Hōgyoku. 42 45

Aizen recruited Arima and Tōsen Kaname into his cause, training them harshly and shaping them into allies capable of infiltrating and influencing the Gotei 13. 25 43 45 He eventually arranged the false continued existence of the Forty-Six Chambers, targeted Kuchiki Rukia to obtain the other half of the Hōgyoku, and openly opposed the Soul Society. 221

After departing the Seireitei, Aizen became the ruler of Hueco Mundo and leader of the Espada. He fully fused with the completed Hōgyoku, transcending the limits of a Soul Reaper. 248 251 Following later confrontations with the Gotei 13 and Zero Division, he was imprisoned in Muken. 297

While imprisoned, Aizen refused Yhwach's invitation to join the Wandenreich, predicting that Yhwach's pride would lead to failure. 325 His confinement ultimately broadened his understanding of Spiritual Power, allowing him to free himself from restraints by analyzing their construction. 315

Appearance

Aizen initially cultivates the appearance of a mild, scholarly instructor. After establishing himself in Hueco Mundo, he abandons his glasses and false persona for a more openly proud presentation.

  • Brown eyes, initially concealed by square-framed glasses. 1
  • Thin but stable-looking physique. 1
  • Flawless, slightly curved eyes and a habitual gentle smile. 1
  • Wore a Soul Reaper uniform during his academy-instructor period. 1
  • Later appears in white robes with a pink belt as Hueco Mundo's ruler. 248
  • In Muken, is bound in a restraint suit and bandages, usually with one eye and his mouth exposed. 297 359

Personality

Aizen projects gentleness, humility, and patience, often speaking politely and smiling even during tense situations. His claimed mediocrity is deliberate self-presentation: he was already a Fourth Seat while serving as an academy instructor. 1

Beneath that persona, he is intensely proud, analytical, and controlling. He despises the Spirit King's order, noble privilege, and systems that constrain exceptional individuals. He believes power should be centralized in capable hands rather than distributed among what he considers corrupt or indecisive authorities. 43 221 223

His interest in people is highly selective. Aizen disdains mediocrity, recruits only talent he considers worthwhile, and regards many others with indifference. 175 297 However, he demonstrates unusual trust, patience, and personal affection toward Arima Shizuya, whom he calls his godson, confidant, and equal partner. 86 248 280

Following his imprisonment, Aizen becomes more reflective. He states that experiencing a low point enabled him to understand his own shortcomings and no longer holds resentment toward those who confined him. 315

Abilities & Skills

Kyōka Suigetsu

Aizen's Zanpakutō grants Complete Hypnosis, manipulating all five senses after its release.

  • Alters perceived appearance, form, mass, touch, sound, smell, and other sensory information. 103 237
  • Can mimic other people and alter how targets perceive their surroundings. 103
  • Was used to guide people through Seireitei facilities without obstruction and fabricate the apparent survival of the Forty-Six Chambers. 45 103 221
  • Can manipulate opponents into attacking allies. 237
  • Can be avoided if the target touches the blade before Complete Hypnosis activates. 69
  • After complete fusion with the Hōgyoku, Kyōka Suigetsu is integrated into Aizen's body rather than existing as a conventional blade; his gestures themselves can mislead. 286

Kidō Mastery

Aizen possesses extremely advanced command of Kidō and treats it as one of the Four Great Basic Skills.

  • Uses Hadō #63: Raikōhō in combat. 47
  • Uses Bakudō #99: Kin to restrain powerful targets. 196
  • Casts powerful Black Coffin restraints; even a simplified version exceeds ordinary Soul Reaper Kidō by several times. 196
  • Developed specialized offensive applications, including the Kidō Eight Methods: Foolish Blind Dragon. 286
  • His Kidō skill is described as reaching a consummate level. 286

Combat Analysis and Training

Aizen can rapidly evaluate combat ability, spiritual potential, and the underlying nature of Zanpakutō powers.

  • Identified Arima's potential and abnormal growth from their first meeting. 10
  • Analyzed Arima's Shikai as powerful but spiritually costly, externally disruptable, and best suited to decisive one-on-one engagements. 47 49
  • Recognizes Zanpakutō as reflections of their wielders and teaches that Bankai evolves from the concept of Shikai. 47 109
  • Personally trained Arima and Tōsen across the Four Great Basic Skills, pushing them to their limits. 45
  • Engineered confrontations to force Arima's development, including his pursuit of his Zanpakutō's true name. 62

Hōgyoku Research and Fusion

Aizen researches the Hōgyoku to surpass Soul Reaper limitations and create stronger spiritual beings.

  • Collected souls for the Hōgyoku and fed it at least 379 spiritual bodies without initial progress. 46 49
  • Experimented with injecting Hollow energy into spirit bodies to seek a breakthrough beyond the four major arts. 93
  • Conducted Hollowification research and created entities including Hollow White. 190 196
  • Fully integrated the completed Hōgyoku into his body, entering a higher spiritual dimension. 251
  • May temporarily separate part of the Hōgyoku for research while fusion remains in its early stage. 251

Spiritual Pressure and Spiritual-Particle Control

Aizen's Spiritual Pressure is overwhelming even among Captain-class fighters.

  • Can incapacitate the Visored and Urahara's group with a release of Spiritual Pressure. 210
  • Collapsed the surrounding area with his Spiritual Pressure when confronted by the Gotei 13. 236
  • Created barriers strong enough to prevent the Gotei 13 from interfering in a battle above them. 273
  • After imprisonment, learned to dismantle restraints and seals by understanding them as Spiritual Power constructs. 315
  • Can control spiritual particles to communicate even when unable to speak. 386

  • Yoruichi Shihōin — longtime acquaintance who knew Aizen through Urahara; later opposes and accuses him. 8 236
  • Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni — a major target of Aizen's caution and opposition; Aizen recognizes Yamamoto's exceptional power. 91 237
  • Kira Izuru — former Vice-Captain who seeks closure from Aizen; Aizen coldly states that he feels nothing for him. 297
