Background / History

Arima grew up as a commoner in Kusajishi District. With little access to formal training, he focused exclusively on kendo, practicing daily until his hands developed heavy calluses and his Swordsmanship reached 20. He entered the True Spiritual Arts Academy because its instruction offered access to the other three Soul Reaper disciplines: Hakuda, Shunpo, and Kidō 1 2.

At the academy, his unusual learning ability became apparent. He could gain proficiency through instruction, observation, and combat; observing Yoruichi’s Hakuda and Shunpo alone produced major gains. Aizen Sōsuke recognized this potential early, encouraged him to seek stronger opponents, and became his principal mentor 7 8 10.

Arima trained and interned across several divisions, including the Second, First, and Twelfth Divisions. Yoruichi and Yūshirō taught him stealth techniques and Shunko, while Yamamoto instructed him in the Yuan Style of Hakuda and urged him to create a path of his own. Arima ultimately broke through his training plateau by combining kendo with Hakuda 54 84 89 114 117.

He later joined the Fifth Division, demonstrated the restricted “Bow Clothing” form of his Zanpakutō to the Captains, and became the division’s Captain after Aizen’s departure from the role 144 169. He subsequently declared his betrayal of the Gotei 13, severing ties with the Fifth Division while insisting that his and Aizen’s goal was not the Soul Society itself 244.

Personality

Arima is intensely training-oriented and views hardship as necessary for growth. He willingly seeks out stronger opponents, even when he expects to be defeated, and responds to bottlenecks by changing methods rather than abandoning his goal 7 37 87 89.

He is generally polite and composed, particularly toward authority figures such as Yoruichi and Yamamoto. He can also be pragmatic: he conceals the true scope of his Zanpakutō when necessary, accepts painful strategic choices, and later distances himself from people who still wish to follow him 55 145 223 244.

Despite his later betrayal, his early actions show compassion and loyalty. He helps the injured Tōsen, remains receptive to guidance, and forms lasting bonds with people including Isane, Hinamori, and his fellow Fifth Division members 3 108 223.

Appearance

Arima is described as slender. After years of advancement, he adopts delicate accessories and ties strands of hair from his temples near his collarbone 184 272.

  • Wore a Soul Reaper uniform as a Fifth Division Captain, including a captain’s haori 251.
  • His hands developed milky-white calluses from prolonged wooden-sword training 1.
  • Later wears small decorative hair ornaments near the left side of his face and collarbone 184.

Abilities & Skills

Stat-Growth Ability

Arima’s personal system tracks the four basic Soul Reaper disciplines and awards growth through training, instruction, observation, and combat.

  • His Spiritual Pressure is the combined manifestation of his Swordsmanship, Hakuda, Shunpo, and Kidō development 23 48.
  • He can receive gains from witnessing techniques far beyond his current level, as shown by Yoruichi’s Hakuda and Shunpo 8.
  • Attributes reaching 60 encounter a “soft cap,” requiring original techniques or compound disciplines to advance further 87 106.

Hakuda, Shunpo, Swordsmanship, and Kidō

Arima develops all four major disciplines instead of specializing permanently in one.

  • Hakuda — Trained under Yoruichi and Yamamoto; employs grappling techniques including the Rear Naked Choke 21 84.
  • Shunpo — Improved through observing Yoruichi and Second Division training 8 62.
  • Swordsmanship — His earliest and foundational skill, developed through kendo in Kusajishi 1.
  • Kidō — Raised through academy instruction, mentorship from Urahara, and Shunko training; eventually reaches a level comparable to ordinary Captains 2 106 134.

This is My Style

A fusion of kendo and Hakuda developed to break the 60-point soft cap.

  • Reflects Arima’s decision to create a personal combat method rather than merely imitate established schools 89.
  • Represents his first documented breakthrough through combining disciplines 89.

Shunko

A Shihōin Clan technique that condenses Kidō energy over the back and shoulders.

  • Arima learns the fundamentals during two months of severe Second Division training 114.
  • Yūshirō teaches him the technique’s energy control after Yoruichi’s foundational training 114 116.
  • Completion of this training raises Arima to Third-Class Spiritual Pressure 117.

Sagara Dragon

Arima’s true Zanpakutō, initially concealed behind the incomplete release name Bow Clothing.

  • Bow Clothing — A limited, illusion-type presentation that manipulates air and energy to simulate battle scenarios; used to conceal his true abilities from the Captains 144 145.
  • One-on-one specialization — Its early form consumes substantial Spiritual Pressure and is easily disrupted by outside interference, making it most effective in isolated duels or pivotal stalemates 49.
  • Adaptation — Allows Arima to withstand and adapt to extreme attacks; he survives Yamamoto’s Bankai and Scorching Hell without releasing his own Bankai 272.
  • Power manipulation — Can interfere with and seize control of other powers, including Yamamoto’s Ryūjin Jakka 273.

First Calamity

A Bankai manifestation that expands Arima’s perception across immense spans of time.

  • Lets him repeatedly experience an opponent’s actions, eventually learning their techniques, patterns, and weaknesses 124.
  • Against Kensei, he endures years of simulated defeat before mastering Kensei’s movements over a millennium of perceived time 124.
  • Can be recalled even under adverse conditions once Sagara Dragon is restored to him 293.

Gandharva

A Bankai that turns Arima’s spiritual power into a distributed network.

  • Disassembles, strengthens, and allocates eight separate powers 180.
  • Integrates his Spiritual Power into the environment and recognized allies 180 181.
  • Allows linked Soul Reapers to cast newly designed Kidō unconditionally 180.
  • Requires familiarity with an area to construct its spiritual-particle network 182.

Garuda

A Bankai aspect based on preserving and accessing past states.

  • Stores and “reads” Arima’s prior conditions 216.
  • Can restore injuries and depleted Spiritual Pressure by returning him to a previous state 216.
  • Its principle is demonstrated when Arima emerges intact after Yamamoto’s Scorching Hell, apparently sending an unharmed past version of himself forward 272.

Tianlong Babu

A later Bankai with multiple tribal aspects.

  • Lacks straightforward offensive power but can manipulate opponents’ actions 287.
  • Includes the Ashura aspect, associated with slaughter and conquest 287.
  • Dragon Deva grants control over surrounding elements, entities, and changes across Soul Society, the Spirit King Palace, and Hueco Mundo 363.
  • Its ultimate use gives Arima double pupils resembling Yhwach’s and power comparable to the Almighty 363.

Hollow and Quincy Power

Arima’s Hōgyoku-related transformation produces a Hollow counterpart and grants Quincy-related capabilities.

  • His Hollow clone has Vasto Lorde-level strength, can manipulate spiritual particles, and is immune to Kidō 200.
  • He later uses superior spiritual-particle control to dismantle Kirge Opie’s Schrift, Prison 307.
  • The Forbidden Approach unifies his Soul Reaper and Hollow powers, removing the barrier between them 285.

Relationships

  • Aizen Sōsuke — Teacher, mentor, and later ally. Aizen recognizes Arima’s growth ability, analyzes his Zanpakutō, trains him toward Bankai, and arranges his Fifth Division succession 10 49 108 144.
  • Tōsen Kaname — Friend and ally. Arima first helps the injured Tōsen; they later train and work under Aizen together 3 48 108.
  • Yoruichi Shihōin — Mentor. Her techniques accelerate Arima’s growth, and she later agrees to teach him Shunko 8 113 114.
  • Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni — Hakuda mentor and eventual opponent. Yamamoto offers personal training and guides Arima toward creating his own style 84 86 272.
  • Kotetsu Isane — Romantic partner; Arima later states that they are officially dating 7 108.
  • Hinamori Momo — Fifth Division subordinate deeply loyal to Arima. She refuses to accept his betrayal and later struggles with the loss of the Captain she knew 223 244 367.
  • Kurosaki Ichigo — Arima is revealed to be part of Ichigo’s power and to have aided him when he was lost as a child 254.
  • Sagara Dragon — Arima’s Zanpakutō spirit and a key safeguard of his identity; it attempts to awaken him after Senjumaru erases his memories 363 291.
  • Uryū Ishida — Partner during the Wandenreich infiltration; Uryū accepts Arima’s complex identity and follows his lead 303 307.

Arima openly announces that he has betrayed the Gotei 13, devastates part of the Seireitei with his Spiritual Pressure, and rejects Hinamori’s attempt to follow him. He faces Hitsugaya and Byakuya while stating that his side’s purpose lies beyond the Soul Society 244.

Identity Fragmentation and Recovery

Trivia

  • Arima initially learned only kendo because it was the sole practical discipline available to him in Kusajishi 1.
  • He declines Yoruichi’s early invitation to join the Mobile Corps, choosing to remain with Aizen 10.
  • His use of the name “Bow Clothing” is deliberate misdirection: an incomplete release name cannot draw out Sagara Dragon’s full power 145.
  • Ukitake remarks that Arima has “a woman’s misfortune written all over” him 173.
