Background
Kyōraku is one of Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni's disciples alongside Jūshirō Ukitake. Despite his frivolous manner and irreverent “Yama-jii” nickname for his teacher, he is regarded as one of the captain-class figures closest to Yamamoto. 40
He takes an early interest in Arima Shizuya because a distant relative of his has a connection to the young Shinigami. This curiosity later develops into close scrutiny of Arima's background, abilities, and relationship with Aizen Sōsuke. 40 76
Appearance
Kyōraku is a disheveled yet dashing middle-aged man whose relaxed appearance complements his deliberately casual manner. 171
- Commonly wears a straw hat, often adjusting or lowering its brim while thinking. 40 76 274
- Has a loose lock of hair hanging before his forehead, which he frequently plays with. 171 212
- Wields twin Zanpakutō blades in combat. 328
- His normally unconcerned expression becomes notably grim and cold when commanding a crisis. 363
Personality
Kyōraku projects laziness, indulgence, and an enthusiasm for alcohol, entertainment, and leaving work early. His Eighth Division reflects this relaxed atmosphere, with its members permitted to depart once their duties are done. 73 75 81
Beneath that persona, he is an observant intelligence specialist who investigates discrepancies, notices concealed motives, and analyzes opponents with unusual precision. During Arima's internship, he identifies the abrupt change in Arima's life after meeting Aizen and concludes that Arima possesses spiritual pressure capable of threatening captain-level opponents. 76
He does not consider secrecy inherently unacceptable. As long as concealed truths do not endanger the Seireitei, he is willing to let others keep their secrets. 76 However, this pragmatism also makes him willing to employ indirect, deceptive, or underhanded methods when they protect his allies. 82 317 330
After becoming Captain-Commander, Kyōraku becomes more direct and burdened by responsibility. He is willing to sacrifice his own dignity, compromise with former enemies, and make difficult decisions to reduce casualties within the Gotei 13. 317
Abilities & Skills
Zanpakutō and Shadow Tactics
Kyōraku fights with twin blades and uses his Zanpakutō, Katen Kyōkotsu, to create deceptive openings against stronger or faster opponents. 328
- Deflects Robert Accutrone's bullets with his twin blades. 328
- Uses a shadow-based deception to make Robert strike an illusion before attacking from the opponent's shadow. 328
- Employs his Shadow Wraith ability to help Coyote Starrk exploit a moment of hesitation and land a decisive attack. 329
- Uses Katen Kyōkotsu to strike Robert after Ise Nanao creates a diversion with Kidō. 328
Tactical Analysis
Kyōraku rapidly dissects unfamiliar powers, combat styles, and hidden motives.
- Investigates Arima Shizuya's formerly unremarkable history and links his sudden growth to Aizen. 76
- Infers that Arima's Zanpakutō may possess predictive capabilities after reviewing his fight with Kensei Muguruma. 127
- Correctly identifies Gandharva as an extension of Arima's own power rather than merely a New Kidō technique. 181
- Detects that the aftermath of Arima's incident contains traces from Shinigami, Hollows, and Quincy. 212
- Realizes that Arima's destruction of the Seireitei may have served a purpose beyond attacking the Gotei 13. 241
Leadership and Command
Kyōraku is adept at keeping volatile captains focused and preserving order under pressure.
- Acts as a mediator when captains draw blades against one another during the investigation into Arima's apparent death. 230
- Exercises command as Acting Captain-Commander during the Fake Karakura Town operation, restraining Kuchiki Byakuya's aggression and directing the Gotei 13's broader strategy. 260
- Leads the effort to gather intelligence rather than pursue an immediate victory against the Arrancar. 260
- As Captain-Commander, seeks Aizen's assistance against the Quincy threat despite their history and Aizen's imprisonment. 317
- Directs the final response to Yhwach's attempted escape, ordering all available forces to stop him. 377
Kidō
Kyōraku can employ Kidō in active combat alongside his swordsmanship.
- Uses Kidō while coordinating with Coyote Starrk against Mask De Masculine and James. 330
- Takes advantage of Nanao's Kidō attack as a distraction against Robert Accutrone. 328

Story Role / Major Arcs
Eighth Division Internship
Kyōraku receives Arima Shizuya as an intern and introduces him to the Eighth Division's intelligence work, including the sorting, updating, and controlled destruction of information. 72 73 He probes Arima's views on secrecy, investigates his past, and ultimately chooses not to force an explanation for the young Shinigami's hidden strength. 72 76
He brings Arima to meet Yamamoto, Ukitake, and Chōjirō Sasakibe, openly presenting him as his intern and praising his liveliness. 78 Following the internship, Arima reports that Kyōraku's carefree image conceals a calculating captain skilled at disguise and exploiting weaknesses. 82
Arima's Betrayal and the Seireitei's Destruction
When Arima is apparently murdered, Kyōraku discourages the captains from turning on one another before Yamamoto's investigation can establish the facts. 230 After Arima's return and betrayal, he is among the first to suspect that the destruction of the Seireitei served a deeper objective. 241 247
Acting Captain-Commander
With Yamamoto unable to personally reach the front line, Kyōraku becomes Acting Captain-Commander during the conflict in Fake Karakura Town. He balances diplomacy with authority, keeps Byakuya from escalating unnecessarily, and ensures the operation remains focused on intelligence gathering. 260
Captain-Commander and the Quincy War
After assuming the Captain-Commander position, Kyōraku confronts Aizen in Muken Hell to request his aid against the approaching Quincy threat. He accepts that leadership requires him to sacrifice personal pride for the survival of the Gotei 13. 316 317
During the Quincy invasion, he shields Nanao from Robert Accutrone's attacks, then acknowledges that she must be allowed to stand and fight for herself. 328 He later works alongside Coyote Starrk against the Stern Ritter before directing the wider final battle against Yhwach's forces. 329 330 363 377
