Background / History
Kakashi enters Team 9 under Minato Namikaze alongside Han Guang, Obito Uchiha, and Rin Nohara. Though already a Chunin and recognized genius, he is reassigned from another team because he prioritized mission completion over his teammates' safety; this outlook is linked to Hatake Sakumo's suicide. He introduces himself with the warning, “Mission first. Don't slow me down.” 1 2
During Team 9's early bell-snatching exercise, Kakashi immediately confronts Minato alone rather than coordinating with the others. Minato later makes him temporary leader for the Hot Water Land escort mission, with the permanent leadership position to be decided by contribution. Kakashi handles route planning, campsites, and daily mission summaries, though his rigid approach repeatedly clashes with Obito and Han Guang. 4 9 14
On the Hot Water Land mission, Kakashi initially misjudges Han Guang's efforts to extract information from Minako. After Han Guang lures pursuing ninja away to secure the team's escape, Kakashi recognizes the sacrifice and leads the exhausted group onward through the forest. 15 19 20
Kakashi gradually reassesses Han Guang after witnessing his overwhelming physical strength and battlefield results. He accepts Han Guang's authority on several missions, writes Team 9's reports at his request, and offers practical warnings about explosive-tag decoys and illusion techniques. 26 35 44 45
Inspired by Han Guang's growth, Kakashi trains his Lightning Release and creates Chidori. His first field test against a Stone ninja ends with him falling into an Earth Style pit, prompting Minato to identify his lack of dynamic vision at Chidori's speed. 66 75
Kakashi later joins Team 9's Anbu activities and participates in the effort to rescue Obito from Madara Uchiha. He remains concerned for Obito after the rescue and observes the consequences of Obito's White Zetsu-derived Wood Release. 94 116 139 144 147
After Han Guang becomes Fourth Hokage, Kakashi commissions a flying greatsword for 37 million ryō. Han Guang subsequently appoints him Captain of the Anbu and authorizes him to expand the organization. 197 249
Appearance
Kakashi has silver hair that partly obscures his black mask. He commonly carries a short sword on his back and later uses a broad greatsword as a flying artifact. 1 7 196
- Silver hair 1
- Black face mask 1
- Short sword carried on his back 7
- Later carries a greatsword over one meter long and roughly twenty centimeters wide 196
Personality
Kakashi is initially aloof, proud, and intensely mission-oriented. He has little patience for Obito's complaints, dismisses poor judgment bluntly, and views teammates who cannot keep pace as liabilities. His history of placing missions above comrades leaves him isolated before joining Team 9. 1 2 5
He is observant and methodical in the field. Kakashi evaluates enemy ranks, plans routes, records mission details, and identifies tactical weaknesses in Han Guang's close-combat style. His advice is practical rather than comforting, focusing on traps, clones, and illusion users. 14 32 35 44 45
Despite his detached demeanor, Kakashi develops greater loyalty to Team 9. He recognizes Han Guang's decoy action as an opportunity for the team to survive, joins the rescue of Obito, and prioritizes Han Guang's safety after the Orochimaru encounter. 19 120 139
Kakashi is also highly competitive. Han Guang's rapid growth drives him to create Chidori, while Obito and Yamato's later increases in strength leave him discouraged. 66 75 161
