Background
Obito began as one of Team 9’s weakest Academy graduates alongside Han Guang, Kakashi, and Rin. He resented Kakashi’s talent and Rin’s admiration for him, repeatedly trying to surpass his rival or remove him from the team. Despite his hostility, he was part of the group’s early attempts at reconciliation and teamwork 1 6.
Madara Uchiha abducted Obito from the Uchiha compound to cultivate him as a successor. Obito recognized Madara immediately, distrusted the offer of strength, and only agreed to train because he lacked the power to escape. He secretly used the trees he had been allowed to plant to lead Han Guang and Minato to his location 100 101 140.
His escape attempt ended in a fall that shattered his shoulder and broke his leg. Madara replaced the ruined shoulder with a White Zetsu shoulder and implanted a talisman in Obito’s heart to restrain him. Han Guang and Minato rescued him before Madara could complete his plans 137 139 140 141.
The White Zetsu tissue fused with Obito, granting him Wood Release. He also awakened a three-tomoe Sharingan, though Han Guang later removed Madara’s talisman from his chest during their duel 145 146.
Appearance
Obito is initially described through his black eyes, which later transform into a three-tomoe Sharingan after his recovery from Madara’s experiments 145.
- Possesses the Uchiha clan’s red, three-tomoe Sharingan 145.
- His shoulder was replaced with White Zetsu tissue after his injury, then fused into his body 139 144.
- Is associated with carrying and caring for two saplings rescued from Madara’s valley 142.
Personality
Obito is outspoken, competitive, and easily provoked. Early in Team 9, he is intensely jealous of Kakashi and seeks recognition from Rin; Han Guang can readily manipulate this insecurity by framing reckless actions as chances to impress her 1 4 6.
He becomes more cautious after undertaking missions and initially treats Madara’s offer with suspicion. However, gaining the Sharingan and Wood Release makes him overconfident: he declares himself Team 9’s strongest member and challenges Han Guang without accounting for Han Guang’s ability to counter Wood Release and resist genjutsu 101 145 146.
Despite his bravado, Obito is loyal to his teammates and Konoha. He is emotionally overwhelmed upon rescue, assists Minato against Madara, and later acts on his own initiative to monitor suspicious ninja and prepare Konoha’s defenses 141 276 309.
