History
Minato was assigned to lead Team 9, a squad composed of Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, Nohara Rin, and Han Guang. He used a bell-snatching exercise to test their cooperation, but struggled to reconcile Kakashi's poor teamwork record with Han Guang's apparent lack of ninja aptitude. 2 4
After learning that Han Guang possessed no chakra nature and could not use conventional elemental ninjutsu, Minato refused to dismiss him as hopeless. He consulted Kushina Uzumaki, drew inspiration from the Tailed Beast Bomb, and developed the Rasengan: a technique requiring neither hand seals nor elemental affinity. 7 8 37
During the border conflicts, Minato led Konoha forces against Kumogakure and Iwagakure while increasingly trusting Han Guang's judgment. He assigned Han Guang, Kakashi, and Uzuki Yugao to infiltrate a Cloud Ninja supply station; later, he fought beside Han Guang against Stone Ninja at Kannabi Bridge. 52 76
He took Han Guang's intelligence seriously even when it implicated powerful figures. After Han Guang revealed that Danzō was cultivating a Wood Release user, Minato immediately reported the matter to Hiruzen Sarutobi. 65 He also attempted to warn Hiruzen about looming threats to Konoha, though the Third Hokage dismissed his assessment in favor of reinforcing the Sand front. 103
Several clan heads later approached Minato as a potential Hokage candidate, citing his strength, character, and connections. Minato ultimately entered the election but admitted that his own abilities were insufficient to deter the Four Great Shinobi Villages; Han Guang became the Fourth Hokage instead. 149 209 231 Han Guang subsequently appointed Minato as Hokage Assistant. 227
Appearance
In his original form, Minato is identified by his yellow hair and is widely recognized by his battlefield epithet, the Yellow Flash. 76 255
After overabsorbing Sage Energy, he takes on a toad-like appearance that he considers too shameful to show to others. 255
- Toad form has frog-like eyes, a tuft of yellow hair, and visible pustules. 255 258
- Sage Mode manifests black markings across his face. 277
- His Impure World Reincarnation body bears obvious facial cracks, which he attempts to conceal with powder. 282
Personality
Minato is patient and protective toward his students. Although Han Guang initially appears incapable of becoming a ninja, Minato continues seeking a method that will allow him to grow rather than abandoning him as a failed student. 8 37
He is cautious in combat and governance, routinely prioritizing reconnaissance, vigilance, and the survival of his teams. He orders squads to maintain alertness around the Cloud Ninja border and refuses to allow Han Guang to undertake a dangerous infiltration alone. 52 61
Minato is also humble about his own limitations. Despite being proposed as a Hokage candidate, he openly acknowledges that his strength alone cannot protect Konoha from the other great villages. 209 His confidence in Han Guang grows into near-total trust, though he remains frequently bewildered by his student's extreme methods and power. 178 233
Abilities & Skills
Flying Thunder God Technique
Minato's signature space-time technique allows him to teleport to marked kunai and rapidly traverse battlefields.
- Used to eliminate multiple Stone Ninja before Kuroiwa disables his marked kunai with Earth Style. 76
- Allows him to return from more than three thousand miles away after expending significant chakra. 238
- His teleportation can be disrupted within Han Guang's gravity-based Rasengan field. 178
Rasengan
Minato develops the Rasengan as a seal-less, attribute-less ninjutsu suited to Han Guang's original limitations. 37
- Can form the technique instantly in his palm. 37
- Uses Rasengan to injure Jiraiya after Jiraiya attacks Han Guang. 245
- Is shocked when Han Guang evolves the technique into the gravity-based Chibaku Tensei. 178
Sage Energy and Sage Mode
After absorbing Sage Energy, Minato gains a transformed body and techniques that let him merge with the natural environment.
- His transformed body possesses enhanced taijutsu; he shatters a huge rock with a single strike. 258
- Can disguise himself as a rock and merge with trees to travel underground. 259
- Uses Sage Energy to turn into mud and escape Orochimaru's poison. 269
- Enters Sage Mode while preparing to face Madara alone. 277
Top of the Buddha / True Several Thousand Hands
Han Guang seals this Wood Release technique into Minato as an automatic defensive asset. 259
- Summons a colossal Senju Buddha Statue larger than Madara's Susanoo. 278
- Commands its thousand-plus arms against Madara's Susanoo. 278
- The technique can temporarily contest Madara, but Minato cannot fully match its original master. 278
Flight Traits
Han Guang custom-makes three traits for Minato: Levitation, Flight, and Extreme Speed. 207
- Gives Minato aerial mobility independent of Flying Thunder God markings. 207
- His flight speed is further enhanced by an Ultimate Perception trait imprinted by Han Guang. 237
- Extended flight and repeated Flying Thunder God use substantially drain his chakra. 238
Leadership and Intelligence
Minato is an accomplished field commander who combines reconnaissance with flexible deployment.
- Recognizes the danger of Cloud Ninja traps and orders a cautious withdrawal after multiple squads are killed. 52
- Uses battlefield reports and footprint evidence to identify the Cloud Ninja vanguard's deceptive retreat. 61
- Conceals Han Guang's more extraordinary abilities in official reports to protect his student from scrutiny. 83
- Successfully infiltrates Madara's organization while disguised as a surviving toad from Mount Myōboku. 267
