Conqueror's Haki is not treated as a simple inborn talent. The Five Elders describe it as arising from determination to achieve a goal, the audacity to pursue it, extreme self-confidence, and an open-minded nature. A user who is constrained by external influences or unable to remain true to themselves cannot continue advancing it 6.

Rayleigh's observations place a user's dream at the center of their Haki's initial strength. It grows as the user realizes goals, clarifies new ambitions, strengthens their will, and develops confidence that they stand above all others 118.

Intimidation and Incapacitation

Conqueror's Haki exerts overwhelming pressure that can render weaker targets unconscious.

• Gawain's first release knocks out most people in Mary Geoise and leaves thousands of slaves and bystanders unconscious 3 4.
• His Haki can affect targets at extreme range; its release over Mary Geoise creates disturbances visible from Marineford and Sabaody Archipelago 4.
• A controlled release can be directed at selected targets, as when Gawain incapacitates Ace's crew while concentrating pressure on Ace himself 226.
• The effect is not limited to humans: Gawain's and Whitebeard's clash causes birds to fall from the sky and fish to turn belly-up 146.

Environmental Pressure and Haki Clashes

When powerful users oppose one another, their Conqueror's Haki can visibly collide as black-red or black-gold lightning and physically affect the environment.

• During Gawain's clash with Whitebeard, the pressure peels back surrounding seawater in layers and clears the clouds overhead 146.

Infusion and Emission

A proficient user can infuse Conqueror's Haki into their body, weapons, or attacks.

• Infusion wraps attacks in black-red lightning and substantially increases their striking power 108 115.
• Rayleigh describes Emission as an invisible blade covering the user's body; it allows an attack to strike beyond the user's physical reach 108.
• Because Emission's range is difficult to judge, it can make attacks unpredictable against opponents who cannot foresee the future 108.
• Hancock combines Conqueror's Haki and Armament Haki around her leg to shatter Gion's sword strike with Perfume Femur Kiss 115.
• Gawain uses advanced coating to reinforce a metal torrent during his battle at Little Garden 269.

Limitations

• Early releases can be indiscriminate. Gawain's lack of control incapacitates people behind him as well as those he intended to intimidate 18.
• Exceptional Conqueror's Haki does not replace physical strength, combat skill, or training. The Five Elders and Kuma both note that Gawain initially possesses supreme Haki but an inadequate body 12 108.
• Its battlefield utility depends on troop placement. Gawain avoids using it freely during a thirty-million-person war because it would incapacitate large numbers of his own densely deployed forces alongside the enemy 546.
• The ability's growth depends on the user's mindset, goals, confidence, and willingness to remain true to themselves 6 118.
