Geography and Environment

  • Fish-Man Island lies beneath the sea near the undersea passage between the Grand Line and the New World. Its position exposes it to heavy traffic from pirates heading toward the New World 41 47.
  • The Sun Tree Eve extends from Mary Geoise to Fish-Man Island. Its resin forms the island’s outer bubble coating, its respiration supplies air, and its crown carries sunlight down to the seabed 42.
  • Connected bubbles between Eve’s roots create a broad air-filled space with a sky and clouds. Smaller bubbles form separate island-like areas within it 43.
  • The outer coating has a reception zone for passing ships. A water-filled membrane passage can connect it to Ryugu Palace 42 43.

Notable Locations

  • Ryugu Palace — Neptune’s seat of government; its gates can be linked to the island’s outer coating by a water-membrane passage 43.
  • Fish-Man District — an area with dimmer sunlight and more aggressive-looking coral houses than much of the island. It becomes a center of armed anti-human radicalism 47 48.
  • Gyoncorde Plaza — equipped to broadcast across Fish-Man Island. Hody Jones uses it as the site of his rebellion; Queen Otohime was killed there five years earlier 67 68.
  • Sea Forest — a seabed gathering place for ocean currents and shipwrecks, and the site of Otohime’s grave 63 65.
  • Mermaid Cafe — Madame Shyarly’s establishment and a destination Shirahoshi longs to visit during her confinement 50 58.
  • Hard-Shell Tower — Shirahoshi’s shelter for five years against weapons sent by Vander Decken IX 50.

History

The kingdom developed beneath Eve’s roots after the tree’s protection brought an ancient war against the fish-men to an end. An account of that era describes the first Poseidon—a fish-man princess able to command Sea Kings—and the kingdom’s survival under surveillance from Mary Geoise 638.

In the more recent Great Pirate Era, traffic through the nearby passage rose sharply. Pirates looted, extorted and kidnapped merfolk for sale on the surface. Fisher Tiger’s death intensified the divide between pro-war and pro-peace factions; Otohime worked to ease it, but Hody Jones later framed humans for her murder 41 47.

Saint Gawain and Mjosgard arrived with forty-six rescued merfolk, who reunited with their families. Gawain then worked with Neptune toward Otohime’s goal of allowing fish-men and merfolk to live on the surface. Hody attempted to exploit opposition to that plan, taking hostages and surrounding Gyoncorde Plaza before admitting that he had assassinated Otohime. After Hody’s death, Gawain spared his followers but ordered them to help build a water–land link and surface settlements 42 43 68 72.

Neptune subsequently sent an initial group of 100,000 fish-men to five claimed islands on Sabaody. They began constructing homes there while slave traders watched from nearby. Later, more than 300,000 fish-men had joined construction on the surface under Marine and Black Ice Terrace protection 132 136 417.

Strategic and Economic Importance

  • Undersea access — Gawain regards a stable Ryugu Kingdom as important to controlling passage between the Grand Line and the New World 41 78.
  • Surface connection — his plan calls for a water–land link station between Fish-Man Island and Sabaody; Neptune retains authority over the kingdom’s internal affairs 72 76.
  • Trade — the kingdom can pay for surface building materials with pearls and gemstones. Gawain also regards its marine resources and export goods as economically significant 160 415.
