History

While serving as a Marine, Bellemere found five-year-old Xianuo among the ruins of a war in the Oykot Kingdom. She rescued him and raised him alongside Nami and Nojiko in Cocoyasi Village 1.

Supporting three children through the orange grove was difficult, and the family spent years in poverty. As Xianuo grew old enough to help, he took on much of the harvest work and became the household’s main breadwinner 2. The family later began producing orange preserves and marmalade in a new workshop, a development that delighted Bellemere 41.

Bellemere worried when Xianuo first left the village by ship, secretly giving him money for the journey. She remained protective even after he returned stronger and defeated the Arlong Pirates, though she was deeply proud of him 4 37 46. When Nami later followed Xianuo to sea without permission, Bellemere scolded her but ultimately gave her blessing to pursue her dream with her brother 72.

Bellemere left Cocoyasi after Xianuo’s growing notoriety drew attention to his family. When CP3 agents questioned the villagers, Genzo reported that her whereabouts were unknown 134. After reuniting with Xianuo roughly a year later, she asked to travel beyond the East Blue. With his help, she reached the summit of the Red Line, a place she had wanted to see since her Marine years 222. She later spent three days aboard the Curtain Call with her daughters before leaving for a rented cottage near Dressrosa’s sunflower fields 225.

Personality

Bellemere is openly stern with her children, particularly when they overwork themselves or get into trouble. Her scolding often accompanies practical care: she changes a rain-soaked Xianuo into dry clothes, worries over his voyages, and supports Nami’s decision to sail despite her initial anger 1 4 72. Straightforward about her wishes, she eventually embraces the chance to travel after more than a decade working in the orange groves 134 222.

Items

  • Old service pistol — A weapon Bellemere kept and polished after leaving the Marines. Xianuo sacrificed it through his system without her knowledge; she was distressed when she discovered it missing 1.
  • Sweater for Xianuo — Sewn by Bellemere before his first voyage 3.

Relationships

  • Xianuo — Adoptive son. Bellemere rescued and raised him, worries about his safety, and later travels with him to the Red Line 1 4 222.
  • Nami — Adoptive daughter. Bellemere disciplines her for mischief but supports her ambition to sail with Xianuo 1 37 72.
  • Nojiko — Adoptive daughter. The two work in the family orange grove, and later reunite aboard the Curtain Call 1 225.
  • Genzo — Cocoyasi Village police officer. He checks on her former home after she leaves and helps conceal her whereabouts from CP3 investigators 134.
