Background / History

Kaido took an interest in Xianuo after reading reports of the young swordsman surviving a battle with Akainu without possessing a Devil Fruit. Impressed by Xianuo’s physical strength and 540 million Belly bounty, Kaido ordered Queen to track him and intended to personally recruit him upon his entry into the New World 116.

His attitude turned volatile after Xianuo killed Hajrudin, whom Kaido called both his former subordinate and brother. Kaido’s grief shifted between tears, praise for Xianuo’s strength, and murderous rage; he ultimately left Onigashima alone to settle the matter himself 133.

Kaido located Xianuo at Water Seven after searching island by island through the first half of the Grand Line. His landing crushed the already-defeated Lucci and Bruno to death. Initially unable to reconcile Xianuo’s immense muscular form with the wanted poster, Kaido recognized him after Xianuo reverted to his usual appearance 149.

At Water Seven, Kaido tested Xianuo’s strength, easily repelling Jack and acknowledging Xianuo’s powerful Haki. Although he initially intended to incapacitate and recruit Xianuo, he agreed to move their battle to Enies Lobby to avoid further civilian casualties 150.

Their Enies Lobby battle drove Xianuo to master Conqueror’s Haki infusion. Kaido recognized the achievement after Xianuo replicated the technique from their exchange, then abandoned his plan to recruit Xianuo by force in favor of fighting him seriously. Kizaru’s surprise attack on Xianuo interrupted the duel; Kaido blamed himself for leading the Admiral to Xianuo and attacked Kizaru in fury, contributing to Enies Lobby’s destruction 151 152.

Kaido later learned that Xianuo had survived and reacted with joy. At Big Mom’s tea party, his renewed recruitment attempt led to a second battle with Xianuo inside Mondol’s Book-Book Fruit story worlds. Their fight lasted five days and ended in a stalemate, after which Kaido accepted that their next meeting would likely be a full-scale war between the Beasts Pirates and Curtain Call 167 211 214 216.

When the Knights of God massacred Beasts Pirates members on Morning Star Island to frame Curtain Call, Kaido accepted Xianuo’s explanation and halted preparations for war. In repayment, he allowed Curtain Call to retain the island 234.

Following Big Mom’s death, Kaido mourned Linlin and declared the Beasts Pirates to be at full combat readiness. As Curtain Call’s influence expanded across the New World, he rejected King’s proposed alliance with the Red-Haired Pirates and instead recruited Douglas Bullet as the new “Drought Disaster” 278 355.

Curtain Call eventually invaded Wano Country. Kaido confronted Xianuo on Onigashima, fought through his strongest forms and techniques, and requested that Xianuo spare his son, Luffy. After witnessing Xianuo effortlessly defeat Bullet, Kaido accepted his own defeat with satisfaction and died as Wano fell 357 358 359.

His drunkenness intensified his instability, causing abrupt shifts between laughter, tears, grief, rage, and excitement 133 152.

Despite his brutality, Kaido respected strength, courage, and ambition. He was fascinated by Xianuo’s potential, repeatedly sought to recruit him, and came to value him as a worthy opponent rather than merely a subordinate 116 150 216. He also retained loyalty toward former comrades, grieving Hajrudin’s death and showing respect for Whitebeard as a brother he had once admired 133 355.

Kaido could think strategically beneath his reckless exterior. He recognized the value of powerful recruits, considered the imbalance in top-tier combat power against Curtain Call, and recruited Douglas Bullet to fill the vacant position of Drought 150 355.
