| First Appearance | Chapter 106 |
Background
Xianuo identifies Sakazuki as one of the people who taught him, establishing a connection that predates their repeated clashes as enemies 82. Sakazuki also considered Vice Admiral Onigumo a comrade who died “upholding justice,” making vengeance for Onigumo a personal motive in his pursuit of Xianuo and the Curtain Call 106.
Appearance
Akainu is a tall Marine officer commonly seen in a dark-red suit, Justice cloak, Marine cap, and cigar. His battles against Xianuo leave him increasingly scarred and mutilated.
- His long-worn Marine cap is lost during the first South Island battle with Xianuo 113.
- He suffers permanent charred wounds to his neck, loses part of his right ear, and retains severe scars after Xianuo escapes 113.
- A later clash leaves his tattoo destroyed and replaced by a large scar 178.
- By the aftermath of the North Blue conflict, he has lost an arm, an eye, and half of his face is torn open 308.
- The Shallow Sea Pact restores his missing right arm before his final confrontation with Xianuo 373.
Personality
Akainu is defined by a severe, uncompromising conception of justice. He regards pirates, traitors, and even Marines who abandon their duty as threats to be eradicated, and he executes suspected Curtain Call impersonators despite learning that they were civilians exploiting the crew’s name 106 110.
His discipline extends to strategy: he reprimands Ryokugyu for acting independently against Whitebeard and sets aside his desire to defeat Aokiji alone when cooperation improves the odds of success 337 373. However, his obsession with order and revenge repeatedly drives him into confrontations with Xianuo despite the mounting cost to himself and Marine Headquarters 114 288.
Abilities & Skills
Magma Devil Fruit Ability
Akainu can transform his body and limbs into magma, producing heat intense enough to boil and convert surrounding seawater into a sea of fire 177.
- Hell Hound — A high-speed magma fist technique with exceptional penetrating power; it damages Xianuo despite his Tekkai and Armament Haki defense 111.
- Magma Dog Red Lotus — Launches multiple pursuing magma hounds at a target 113.
- Meteor Volcano — Bombards the battlefield with magma while pursuing Xianuo’s escape 113.
- Magma Prison: Core Eruption — A later technique that creates lava pillars and places Xianuo under heavy pressure 298.
- Fire Breath — Forms giant magma fists to attack Zoro and Sanji 296.
Haki and Physical Combat
Akainu possesses powerful Observation Haki, using it to predict Xianuo’s landing position during their first battle 111. He can also clash directly with Haki-coated opponents in prolonged close-quarters combat 111 112.
- Endures and exchanges dozens of direct blows with Xianuo during their South Island fight 112.
- Continues fighting after being knocked into the sea, relying on his magma ability to turn the surrounding waters into a burning battlefield 176 177.
- His combat power is sufficient to battle Aokiji’s ice techniques and Whitebeard alongside Ryokugyu 337 341.
Shallow Sea Pact
Before attacking the NEO Marines, Akainu accepts the Shallow Sea Pact on Kong’s recommendation. The pact grants regenerative power, restoring his right arm and strengthening him beyond his previous condition 373.
- A five-pointed star mark appears on his arm after accepting the pact 373.
- He uses the restored arm to pressure Aokiji with attacks from multiple directions 373.
- Akainu states that he chose the lesser Shallow Sea Pact rather than becoming a “complete slave” through a deeper pact 373.
Military Command
Akainu commands major Marine operations and personally leads from the front.
- Volunteers to pursue the Curtain Call after Onigumo’s death and receives orders to capture Xianuo alive if possible 106.
- Leads a force of four Headquarters warships and more than five thousand elite soldiers during the failed Thor Island operation 110.
- Directs a landing force to rescue World Nobles during the North Blue campaign 294.
- Serves as the frontline commander in the Marine assault on Whitebeard’s crew, coordinating with Ryokugyu against Whitebeard 337.

- Kong — Fleet Admiral who succeeds Warring States. Kong recommends the Shallow Sea Pact that restores Akainu’s body 313 373.
- Ryokugyu (Aramaki) — Marine Admiral who fights beside Akainu against Whitebeard and later assists him against Aokiji 337 373.
- Zephyr — Former Marine instructor and leader of the NEO Marines. Akainu attacks Zephyr’s headquarters and kills many of its students 373.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Pursuit of the Curtain Call
Akainu volunteers to hunt Xianuo after the Loguetown incident, citing Onigumo’s death and accusing Aokiji of being too personally attached to Smoker to carry out the mission ruthlessly 106. Misled by false intelligence on Thor Island, he executes a group of civilians impersonating the Curtain Call and orders punishment for those responsible for the faulty report 110.
He subsequently encounters Xianuo on South Island and battles him while his subordinates attempt to capture the rest of the Curtain Call. Akainu uses Hell Hound, Magma Dog Red Lotus, Meteor Volcano, and direct magma attacks, but Xianuo delays him long enough for his allies to escape 111 112 113. Xianuo’s escape leaves Akainu permanently scarred and intensifies his determination to destroy the crew 113 114.
New World Clashes
Akainu uses a false distress call to lure Xianuo into another confrontation, recognizing him immediately from his voice and scar 176. Their conflict escalates into a major New World battle, where Akainu’s tattoo is destroyed and Xianuo’s improved Conqueror’s Haki-infused attack leaves a lasting scar 178.
When Xianuo later attacks Impel Down, Akainu is prepared to pursue him but is stopped by the Five Elders, who prioritize the Amusement Park Plan over an immediate conflict with Curtain Call 288.
Marine Headquarters Crisis
After the Celestial Dragons’ hunting game is exposed, Akainu attempts to restore discipline by demanding that Marine officers obey their superiors rather than challenge the institution 310. His authority proves insufficient to stop widespread defections, including Aokiji’s departure 311 312.
Following Warring States’ collapse, Akainu takes command of the remaining Headquarters personnel, orders the stabilization of Marine branches, demands action from the World Government, and nominates himself as a replacement Fleet Admiral. Kong is appointed instead 313.
War Against Whitebeard and Curtain Call
Akainu serves as the frontline commander during the Marine campaign against Whitebeard. He coordinates with Ryokugyu to attack Whitebeard, but rebukes Ryokugyu for abandoning the plan and acting alone 337. When Aokiji and Fujitora block the Marine Admirals from reaching Xianuo, Akainu battles Aokiji once more 341.
After the campaign turns against the Marines, Akainu orders the fleet to break through and evacuate, assigning Vice Admirals and stronger officers to cover the retreat 350.
Attack on the NEO Marines and Defeat
As the Marines seek a final way to reverse their decline, Akainu supports the plan to use Explosion Rock to destroy the New World 360. He later attacks Zephyr’s NEO Marines headquarters, killing students, defeating Ain and Binz, and nearly killing Zephyr before Aokiji intervenes 373.
Having accepted the Shallow Sea Pact, Akainu regains his right arm and fights Aokiji with Ryokugyu’s support 373. Xianuo arrives at Marineford, defeats Akainu with a single kick, forces him to kneel and apologize to Zephyr, the fallen NEO Marines, and Xianuo, then erases him with a finger flick after his final attempted attack 374.
