Background and History

Kunpeng is a Quasi-Saint whose ambition to become a Saint repeatedly shapes his decisions. After Di Jun and Eastern Emperor Taiyi create a world with the Sun Crystal, Kunpeng asks to use it for his own world creation. Di Jun refuses, leaving Kunpeng resentful 103 180.

Kunpeng secretly helps the ten Little Golden Crows escape, hoping to use their cores to attain Sainthood. Ancestor Hongjun later confronts him but offers him protection and a Saint position in exchange for stirring the Witch and Demon tribes into war. Kunpeng accepts 212 213 214. He subsequently advises Di Jun and helps prepare an attack on the Human Race to obtain souls for the Witch-Slaying Sword, securing Hongjun’s help in restraining the Human Race’s western Sage protectors 372 373.

When Di Jun orders him to probe Demon Ancestor Luohu, Kunpeng goes to Shouyang Mountain. Luohu overwhelms him and forces him back into bird form; Chen Sheng, unaware of his identity, keeps him in a cage as a pet. Kunpeng later regains his human form 425 426 427 457. In another attempt to gain power, he steals the Human Race’s Body Strengthening Gymnastics manual, but cultivating from it damages his Origin Power rather than advancing him 520 521.

Nuwa eventually reconstructs Kunpeng’s actions at Tanggu Valley through a feather. Xi He presents the evidence to the Demon Clan, exposing his role in the Golden Crows’ escape. Di Jun publicly destroys the evidence, then privately uses Kunpeng’s wrongdoing to compel his continued service 504 710 711 714.

Appearance

Kunpeng can appear as a human or as a great bird 426 457.

• Bird form: His spread wings can obscure half the sky 535.
• Gray feathers: One of his enchanted feathers is used to lure the Little Golden Crows; another becomes evidence against him 710.

Personality

Kunpeng is ambitious and adept at persuasion, often presenting self-serving plans as service to the Demon Clan. He feigns innocence when confronted by Xi He and uses appeals to sympathy or loyalty to win help from Nuwa and Tongtian 508 748 777. His caution is equally pronounced: he fears confronting stronger figures directly and submits when Di Jun holds leverage over him 425 472 714.

• Kunpeng flies rapidly in bird form, outpacing the humans who pursue him to the North Sea 520.
• He can use his wings to raise a gale and uses Demonic Power to resume human form 457 538.
• He attempts to shield Di Jun with Demonic Power, but Chen Sheng’s sword strike overwhelms him 568 569.

Scheming and Persuasion

• He proposes covertly capturing the Human Race’s Three Ancestors rather than attacking their protectors head-on 472 473.
• He persuades Nuwa to aid the Demon Clan, then invokes her power to pressure the Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin patriarchs into submitting 748 755 756.
• He convinces a suspicious Tongtian to visit the Heavenly Court by claiming Nuwa needs his help 776 777.
