Background

Xuanzang was known in childhood as Jiang Liuer, having drifted down a river before being raised at Golden Mountain Temple. After formally becoming a monk, he received the Dharma name Xuanzang. He was extraordinary from childhood, able to drive away demons and ghosts with his bare hands, though he did not understand the origin of his strength. 487

Guanyin revealed that he had been born with a mission: travel west for Buddhism, obtain the Mahayana scriptures from Mount Wuyi, and eventually bring salvation to the suffering people of Wanxiang. Xuanzang accepted without hesitation and received the Six-Ray Cicada Staff, Purple Gold Alms Bowl, and Brocade Kasaya. 487

His true origin is Jin Chanzi, the reincarnation of the ancient Six-Winged Golden Cicada. His reincarnated body retains the Fierce Beast’s formidable physique, as well as its Law of Devouring and Geng Metal Law comprehensions. 499

Appearance

Xuanzang is a refined, fair-skinned, exceptionally handsome young monk whose appearance repeatedly draws attention from nobles, demons, and the women of Xiliang. His peaceful exterior contrasts sharply with the fierce aura he reveals in battle. 490 512 513

  • Clear yet naturally sharp eyes; they turn golden when he releases his Fierce Beast pressure. 487 489
  • Usually wears simple monk’s robes and carries the Six-Ray Cicada Staff. 489
  • Radiates benevolent Buddha Light when using Buddhist powers. 499
  • His body can shine golden after enduring powerful flames, revealing a physique far beyond that of an ordinary human. 509

Personality

Xuanzang is compassionate, principled, and deeply committed to saving suffering beings. He willingly accepts the mission to spread Buddhism to Wanxiang because he believes that a Buddha must ferry suffering beings toward liberation. 488

His compassion is not indiscriminate. Xuanzang distinguishes between beings acting out of nature and those who knowingly harm innocents. He can spare a tiger acting on instinct, yet executes bandits and demons whose continued existence would endanger others. 490 492

Despite presenting himself as a humble monk “not skilled in force,” Xuanzang is blunt, confident, and fearsome when confronting evil. He holds Buddhist figures accountable for the crimes of their disciples and mounts, and becomes increasingly intolerant of demons exploiting Buddhist affiliations as protection. 489 508 523

His relationship with Xiliang Yue exposes his vulnerability to worldly attachment. Rather than abandon either love or duty, he chooses to marry her before continuing his mission. 515 517
