Background / History
Zhunti is one of the two Western Saints residing on Mount Sumeru alongside his senior brother, Jieyin. He views the West as impoverished and chronically short of talent and spiritual treasures, motivating his repeated attempts to bring “Fated Ones” and resources from the East into the Western Teach. Tongtian’s acquisition of the Twelve-Petal World Purifying White Lotus particularly provokes his envy. 28
During the era of the Human Race’s rise, Zhunti and Jieyin seek to build influence among humans by having disciples assist them and by positioning the Western Teach to educate a future Human Sovereign. Zhunti later creates or dispatches his good corpse, Daoist Ku Chazi, when he cannot personally intervene in the struggle surrounding the Three Sons of Destiny. 119 173 176
Cangyuan and Styx approach Zhunti with a proposal to slay a Saint so Styx can attain the Dao. Tempted by the offered spiritual treasures and seeking Cangyuan’s future assistance with Ksitigarbha’s path, Zhunti agrees to endure their attack in Chaos. Cangyuan’s three World Incarnations pressure his defenses, and Styx ultimately kills him with the God-Slaying Spear. Zhunti resurrects after the battle, humiliated but compensated with treasures and promised assistance. 190 194
Zhunti later attempts to seize and convert Kong Xuan for the Western Teach, but Kong Xuan resists his Saintly techniques. Cangyuan’s incarnations intervene, forcing Zhunti and the Western Teach to retreat from the North Sea. 224 227
After this setback, Zhunti escalates his efforts to undermine Great Shang. He uses the Seed of Evil Desire through Chang’er Dingguang Xian, then personally writes a blasphemous poem on Nuwa’s statue to frame Di Xin and provoke Nuwa into punishing Shang. The scheme is exposed, bringing Tongtian’s Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation to Mount Sumeru; Zhunti ultimately agrees to pay Tongtian sixty Bodhi Seeds as compensation. 230 233
During the Canonization of Gods conflict, Zhunti supports the anti-Shang alliance, promotes Ji Fa’s declaration as the Son of Heaven, and intervenes to save him from Xuanyuan. His intervention leads to a battle against Xuanyuan in the Beyond the Heavens before Yu stops the Saints’ conflict. 235 344 348
Zhunti later enters the Trapping Immortal Sword Palace to guard the Trapping Immortal Sword. Xiao Bai, having attained the Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal of the Origin realm, kills him with the Primordial Sky Measuring Ruler; he resurrects afterward and demands the return of his treasures. 359
When Jieyin establishes Mahayana Buddhism in the Western Ox Continent, Zhunti attacks Duobao and Mount Wuyi out of fear that the new teaching will displace the Western Teach. Primordial Lord of Heaven suppresses him, but Jieyin—now a Dao Integration Saint—intervenes and removes the shackles hindering Zhunti’s own advancement. 407
After entering the Myriad Phenomena Divine Realm, Zhunti quickly defeats Indra, takes his divine artifacts, interrogates Vishnu about other Divine Realms, and attempts to claim Vishnu’s artifacts as well. He successfully steals Vishnu’s Divine Scepter with an unusual technique. 463 465
Personality
Zhunti is intensely acquisitive. His desire for spiritual treasures, gifted disciples, favorable karma, and Western Teach prosperity repeatedly overrides caution; he is easily baited by valuable offerings and openly envies others who obtain supreme treasures. 190 191 594
He is also opportunistic and manipulative, favoring indirect schemes such as recruitment, conversion, planted agents, false accusations, and the amplification of mortal desire. When a plan fails, he readily shifts to a new one rather than abandoning the Western Teach’s long-term expansion. 230 236 300
Despite his pride and concern for face, Zhunti can be pragmatic when confronted by stronger opposition. He accepts blame to protect Mount Sumeru and Jieyin, bargains under pressure, and retreats when Cangyuan’s power threatens his restrictions. 227 233
